Intimacy

Pah

It seemed like

when Metallica were on it was louder right at the back near the donut stall than it was right down the front for Rage, QOTSA, Bloc Party, etc.

Manics also seemed louder and clearer vocals than The Cribs.

You couldn't hear any of Pendulum from outside the tent over the crowd. They needed a bigger stage.

Hopefully they'll sort it out.

Ageist, or...

Alex Kapranos = 35
James Dean Bradfield = 38

they're not dull, there isn't a dull moment on SATT. people are debating the quality but it certainly can't be called dull.

they still perform the old songs live with ALMOST the same amount of intensity. its just the lyrics that are lacking now, thats all.

EMG > SATT but they're similar beasts. Just EMG fitted in with all the Oasis/Blur fans, whereas SATT is hideously out of touch with current music trends, not that that matters.

And people care about the numbers because if it got an 8 instead of a 4 more people would be inclined to listen to it thus increasing record sales, as pointed out by Diver, DiS is well respected and read by many.

yes..

but perhaps the writer should do his homework a little better in describing it as that, considering where his article is going to be published.

Also...

Why is DiS calling it a return to form when they gave the last Manics album 9/10?

no irony

the manics have always contradicted themselves. i doubt you're an "old manics fan" if you think its ironic.

the reviewer has missed the point by saying "with an apparently straight-face"... this is all tongue in cheek, all humour. they know its overblown, over-the-top, ridiculous and rips off themselves and other bands, they don't care its whats natural to them. it's a fun, light-hearted record. I really enjoyed it I would give it a 7 or an 8...

I'd have...

re-released Atlantis instead. The album mix is a beast.

heard it for the first time today...

...in the gym, the only place where I'm forced to listen to commercial music.

I don't think its a particularly good cover at all.

Also the string sections are blatantly ripping off Rob Dougan's Furious Angels (the Matrix Reloaded theme).

LOL

Hope you're not suggesting that the Manics were directly related to you not having a girlfriend Diver.

yer

i didn't think we're here works as well solo as blue would still be blue, or when the world ends, or little bear, or even redwings or whatever.

the title kinda gives it away :) WE'RE here. and the thing that makes it is the uplifting string section. whereas the previous songs i mention attention is drawn to the more emotionally charged lyrics.

the chatter ruined it more than anything else though

And...

1) He didn't play Little Bear at all. He did We're Here solo which was almost completely drowned out by chatter.

2) On first listen, Big Dog sounds compltely over-the-top and frankly ridiculous, his vocals are almost Timberlake/Justin Hawkins in pitch which I didn't really love.

3) And... I'm pretty sure that the one "They want to invade out space" isn't a new song, I think it might have been on the Of the Night EP, I might be wrong though..it sounded familar anyway.

P.S. Dom I love your work, so I'm almost apologetic with this post here :(

Before I even read this review...

...I went. And it was by a country mile the most disappointing gig I've ever been to. I thought the effects were way to high in the mix, everything seemed too high pitched, frankly ear-piercing at times. It had an alarming and unnerving factor to it, but the impression I got at the end was that Guillemots aren't a BAND with SONGS, they're just a group of talented musicians with great ideas. And it left me totally gutted. This 8/10 score means perhaps this wasn't just an off gig, and that I'm not as into them as I thought I was.

:(

6th listen

and I'm there... to think I even doubted em. The astoundingly brilliant triple whammy of 'Uniform', 'On' and 'Where Is Home?' makes up for the slightly disappointing softer tracks in the second half.

It's not as good as Silent Alarm (which was as close to a perfect album as I've heard) but I can't hold that against it, how many bands do 2 albums as good as these two?

Agreed

Making Dens gets my vote too. Followed by TV on the Radio and Guillemots.

I was gonna see them tonight,

Although I was considering not going cos I'm feeling pretty ill. So I have mixed feelings over this news :)

hahaha

that cracked me up.

I don't like it...

I think the melody just sounds like a more upbeat 'I'm Not Okay'.

I don't think it's particulary attention grabbing, its nothing new or exciting.

Also best number one of the year since Crazy it may be, but this is no feat at all....

# Sandi Thom - "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)"
June 4 for 1 week

# Nelly Furtado - "Maneater"
June 11 for 3 weeks

# Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - "Hips Don't Lie"
July 2 for 1 week

# Lily Allen - "Smile"
July 9 for 2 weeks

# McFly - "Please, Please"/"Don't Stop Me Now"
July 23 for 1 week

# Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - "Hips Don't Lie"
July 30 for 4 weeks

# Beyonce feat. Jay Z - "Deja Vu"
August 27 for 1 week

# Justin Timberlake feat. Timbaland - "SexyBack"
September 3 for 1 week

# Scissor Sisters - "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"
September 10 for 4 weeks

# Razorlight - "America"
October 8 for 1 week

I think only Deja-Vu and Hips Don't Lie come close...

I'd put good money on the album being absolute tosh.

yea

It's all true. Most of the local unsigned bands in nottingham i've had the pleasure (?) of talking to are arrogant cliquey arsewipes. I'm cynical about certain bands who did Live 8 etc as well.

DiSappointed...

with this review. I think the journalism on this site is brilliant, I even love the fact the writers impose their opinions of the artists or the scene and sometimes disregard the music. However, this review is the worst thing I've ever read on here. It barely even comments on the performances, from reading the comments its almost as if the writer didn't actually see that band.

The Franz comment could have been written before the festival even began, and it sounds like it too, and this comes from someone who strongly disagrees with Franz headlining.

I could pick thousands of holes with this feature, it really does sound like its written by someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, in stark comparison to the usual high standard you'd expect from DiS.

Words: Dis Festivals ? Who's guilty? Own up!!!

Fact of the matter is...

...Nicky Wire has a weak, wierd voice, but it is no better or worse than Ian Brown's and look at the adoration he receives.

As for James' album, I don't expect much, it is true that the Manics do not matter anymore. But if we go back to when they did matter, I can't think of any band since that has meant more to me... Bloc Party came close.

Yep

I love the heads, but this song definately sounds like a tribute band. Plus the chorus sounds like the Zutons...

Re: Back to Bluntdom: Your 'Beauty' Corrupted The

Great article Diver, I share your disillusionment.

Completely agree with this post especially about the marker of time. Also I was watching VH1's top 100 love songs during a particularly boring weekend, and when Blunt popped up at number 3 I screamed FUCK OFF YOU BASTARDDDDD at the tv with such venom my housemates burst into the room wondering what the hell was going on. ah well.

Re: Boy Kill Boy - Civil Sin

Dom got it wrong
H_TOWN was a complete nobhead about it

So poo off all of ya's.

Bittersweet - Lying, Drinking and Losing

possibly the worst review ever

The Killers

i was also at the same gig...down the front for most of it and i would say the heads stole the show. hardly anyone knew of them judging by the chatter around me, so many impatient people waiting for the killers. i think a lot of people were converted that night. mr brightside sounded so weak, very slowed down, first time ive heard it live. halfway through their set i made the pilgrimage to the bar...a lot of the lesser songs from hot fuss were definately more meaty live music-wise though.......im undecided.

Manic Street Preachers - Lifeblood

another good review from DiS. i loved Solitude Sometimes Is when i first heard it, you have to expect some conflict when you compare that to something like Archives of Pain. It's hard to believe the same band produced both songs lol. THB is my favourite album ever, as much as i agree the Manics were far, far, far more important when Richey was around, they've actually made the album they've always wanted to. I'm hoping that they will bring the tracks to life on the tour and give them an extra edge.

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

its a fuckin quality album apart from the 3 weak middle tracks (action radar/medusa/phoenix), youll be under my wheels is quality. its just the people need to realise that liam has deliberately cut out the commercial "single" aspect that flinty and maxim had on FOTL, and veered more towards the beats of Jilted. worst tracks on AONO are where he is still imitating FOTL too much, cos you just can't do it. its a grower.

Re: Goldie Lookin' Chain - Guns Don't Kill People,

Of course theyre takin the piss! and doin a damn good job of it. you dont think they are a serious band do you? this is where they differ from the Darkness.
