A band that mediocre

need the publicity I guess

I find it funny that he hates Rush

yet they've had the longevity he talks about. Hmmm

A very good article, but he doesn't mention that most record deals strangle the artist financially if they are anything less than massively successful either. But I think the music press in this country are anti musician, london centric and generally just looking for the zeitgeist artist of the year. So I guess record companies are responding to that demand maybe. I dunno, but the tail has been wagging the dog for a while now.

Attitude = Effort

Thats not what you said to me when I met you at a gig once Jordan, you said the singer of Oceansize had a real "attitude" and although I can't remember the finer points of our encounter you seemed rather pissed off at him at the time ;P

Adam Franklins hair has all gone

he looks like a bearded potatoe wearing shades. I love SWD, I think you wont get an accurate look at them from a British Journalist. Just cos we didnt embrace them, the Americans did. I dont care if its shoegaze or not. I just like the tunes.

But I'm pretty sure

I've had more than 500 illegal downloads anyway cos of russian MP3 sites and I'm unconvinced those fans as you call them are more into the music than the 300 or so who paid for it?

Hooky is ace

He's always come across tome like a nice bloke and kinda honest about music, theres no angle, he always seems genuine.

Spot on review

I heard it playing in hmv the other day while Iwas buying some dvd's and it just felt like they were paying lip service to their early stuff, there was a lack of any real melodies and lots of times where the guitars just seemed too lowin the mix. Asdhcroft/Bass/Drums is nota pleasant combination. A wasted oppertunity

Not suprisingly

they sound like My Vitriol too;)

A) Super Furry Animals

Furries

As tabloid characters

there ok, musically I'm indifferent. I just hate the way that they've become such a reference point for new british guitar bands that write derivative terrace anthems. I could happily commit mass murder to innocents while listening to The Twang

It depends on the band

I saw Death Cab in Rock City and they underwhelmed me, wheras in a smaller club they are much better. Also not all bands can play arenas credibly. I think I'm happy seeing an older Classic Rock band in that environment cos they know how to project, wheras a lot of newer bands seem a bit lost to me.

I prefer small club gigs or festies really.

He should deal with it

My reality is 7-8 band bills and no soundcheck....I live with it.

If we had Sharia Law in this country

I'd cut out his tongue.

He's not the right broadcaster for BBC6 music, put him on another station maybe, but the arrogance of the BBC with our fucking money to continue with this twat shows how they treat us with contempt.

My lot play London more often than our hometown now

But that was simply because we were offered gigs there, not all promoters are bad either, some are lovely, Dis gave us many beers when we played J7 & we supported Wry recently at The Bull & Gate and Rob the promoter was a lovely fella, he put 3 bands on with a similar theme and it was a really good night. He really promoted it too.

Just to Echo Doms comments We've just been offered a load of Nottingham gigs this week, but last year we used to really struggle to get local gigs.

What we did get offered was lots of 7 band bills of bands with no similarity or common thread, which IMHO doesnt exactly make for a great experience when your tripping over each others amps and one band hogs soundcheck etc. The you've got a wannabee Slayer on before you and something that sounds like Clearlake on after, I'm not sure audiences really stay around beyond seeing their mates nowadays.

But I think Mr Wisdom makes a very valid point regarding London. We've play so many gigs with careerist indie bands trying to get the NME's attention and it all seems so manafactured and plastic,

Toni & Guy Haircut - Check
1970's Fender Telecaster Custom - Check
Floppy Scarf- Check
Blake Fielder Civil Style Hat- Check
Strummy skiffle lite anthems - Check

I'm not sure you can have your own sound if its so dictated by what you think will get you signed, the tail is wagging the dog. Funnily enough these bands always have a manager barking into a mobile phone in a corridor looking empowered yet there playing at our level and we manage ourselves?

I like the Song about

Mary Shelley was it?

Thin Lizzy were fookin ace, no arguement.

Ha Ha

Superb

Im not bothered about filesharing

But I am bothered about Russian websites selling my bands cd for $1.50 and making out its legitimate when its clearly a criminal act of piracy.

I dont think this will help musicians but I'm not sure what will. Playing live does not even cover our expenses right now, and thanks to the internet your fans might not even be in the same country as you.

Also I'm not sure the point in having a hard drive of 400GB of music on it when you may only listen to the same 10 albums on a regular basis. Do we simply have too much choice now?

Uhhh

Thom Yorke went to the same school as Michael Portillo.

He's no more Po Faced

than some other critically acclaimed bands I could mention.

I love UXO thats a beautiful album, not got much else by them....any reccomendations?

Thats really sad

All my band are huge Whitesnake fans, the earlier stuff was more bluesy than the later American Rock sound. But they've never been critically embraced I guess, but I doubt they care, a good tunes a good tune.

You gotta admire the guys dignity, I just remembered there was a thing in the Derby Evening Telegraph a few months ago about a man in Ripley, Derbyshire pretending to be Mel Galley which was weird, the paper actually doorstepped him with the real Mel Galley.

If Radiohead formed a Rush Tribute Band

It'd be Muse. By rights I should love them, but they've always left me cold.

Love Music, Hate Racism?

How about Love music, Hate Economic Exploitation? I hope there campaigning for foreign workers employment rights?

I see less ethnic diversity at the indie disco than I did 10 years ago. Everything is more seperated. A campaign bringing everyone together might be better.

We've always had immigration

As do many countries. I think its the Integration thats the actual problem.

Morriseys views are held by lots of middle aged people. Large numbers of Asian people are very angry about our new influx. As usual there are no easy answers.

The NME article was basically an attempt to portray Morrisey as a racist. I've no idea if he is or not. But our current situation is a complicated one. They just turned it into an angry sixth form rant.

I liked them

I'm not sure if they will do anything new, but I'll go see em. I think they were more popular in the States than here. Mezcalheads a top album.

I like Muslims

on the whole, there just another religion made up of some nice and some er not so nice people, its just the twattish ones who get this attention. Saira Khan from the apprentice was ace and really nice. I bet she owns a Madonna Album.

Having said that I like Rock music and drinking and chicks so the Jihadists will be after me if they ever get into any sort of power. But I don't care, my ancestors were running round the peatbogs of Ireland cutting each others heads off and getting shitfaced long before Allah was even heard of. Thats the thing with Religions there only about 2000 years old and people liked drinking and fucking even then.

No

It'll just be them with a few U2 echoey bits and some guitar solo's.

Trouble is their guitarist is pretty wank from what I've seen, so some session musician in London will get that call.

Who Cares

I just think its bad overrated 70's Rock. The Cult did it much better on their Electric album.

These pricks deserve to fail

I've made an album for £1600.00, its perfectly feasable than my record stands up against anything. But you need the money in PR/Press,pluggers promotion etc.

I'm sure its easy enough to sign more bands for smaller advances and do something genuinely interesting and sustainable than keep on signing all these "soft rock nonces".

I like Bloc Party

Hunting for Witches is brilliant. I normally hate bands that get critical acclaim, so they must be good;)

Knew

sorry

Ha Ha

Even I new that and I'm like 300 years old')

Marillion are fuckwits

They pissed their career away. It was a clever idea getting your audience to finance your albums but really if they hadn't been writing such unimaginative shit in the first place they'd still be signed and playing bigger venues.

The NME will go under within 18 months

Its just not sustainable, who cares...

I don't have an opinion on Beth Ditto or The Gossip....I doubt I'll remmber them in half a decade other than that one hit

Well he's been on about going direct for ages

He said in an interview that as soon as a big act like Radiohead or Oasis decided to sell direct to the audience then the major label was over. He's right, fuckwits like marillion have been doing it for a while, so surely a bigger band.....they'd be on footballers wages.

I think majors would have faired better if they weren't so conservative in what they signed and maybe signed lots of bands cheaply & actually did some legwork. Also I blame a lot of the " haircut bands" who change there styles to match the NME on an almost bi monthly basis.

Its just PR

Doherty's management will murder him days before the Arena tour starts, thus making him a Kurt like Martyr and they will just exploit the back catalog forever.

English music is just about PR now, tunes are immaterial, just act rock & roll & shag Kate Moss and you've got instant cred with the red tops.

I mean can anybody outside of Babyshambles remember one of their tunes?

Awwwwwww

I quite liked the 1st album, I lost touch with them after that.

Who Cares

He's a Talentless Cunt, who's had to fuck a supermodel or rob a house or do drugs to remind us that he actually exists.

Motley Crue did it with more style

I blame the record companies

After all they are signing this drivel. Also does a new act have any real chance of any real exposure thats not stage managed by PR in a labour party stylee.

I play in a small alternative band and theres no way any of the majors would touch us in a million years. Because we'd be a significant risk. But I feel the rejection by them is almost a sign of the quality of what we do.

I laughed out lous when I saw the twang, they were such a Oasis/U2/Simple Minds style ladrock car crash they had to be invented by someone or heavily told how to sound by someone in the marketing dept of a major label.

What Bollocks!

Course everyones aware of fucking Slavery, maybe the odd cunt who doesn't read newspapers and watch television. But most people have a clue.

I love Achtung baby

but after that Adam Clayton should have overdosed on Naomi Campbells minge....face it there just treading water like the Stones have done since 1982.

Borrel is a cunt

He's just the epitome of every middle class wannabe careerist indie musician I've ever met in my life.

Its Funny

We build a museum of PopMuic in Sheffield that no one goes to, but are quite happy to close places like this and the Intrepid Fox in Soho to some shitty developer. Its like no one in any position of power has any clue about the nations musical & social landscape.

I get it

At least they can pull it off whe they are "off their face". Doherty just keels over & I can't respect someone who wraps themselves in that imagery yet is unable to funtion properly.

I understood the comment, they were basically pushed aside in favour of bigger bands. Fair enough.

Warren Cucurillo is better

although he likes making gay porn in Brazil or something now. Andy Taylor is a shit guitarist and I'm not a fan.

Err...

not really my old neighbours used to play that first album to death and he sounded like he was slapping her around through the walls. Nasty business.

Noel is Great

Kasabian make derivative "lad rock" for people who beat up their girlfriends on a friday night.

Its an Award

for the biggest selling albums that overworked blue collar thirtysomethings bought at petrol stations at 3 am or their wives bought in the supermarket. Its nothing to do with music, just what someone who has no time for music actually thinks music is.

I went once in 95

and I never liked the atmosphere, too many posuers. I actually had a better time at Phoenix. I prefer smaller festivals now. Ashton Court seems a lot more fun and less hassle.

I've never really been an Oasis Fan

But Liams ace! I imagine watching Liam Gallagher round Sainsburys is more fun than watching the entire Razorlight creative process from start to finish.

No Point in Worrying...

The NME will be discontinued by 2008, as will Lily Allen, they can go and be extinct together.
