You make some good points but here's an example of why I think you're wrong:
Music that's become popular this year: Such as Florence and the Machine and La Roux.
There seemed to be a sudden "backlash" of sorts towards these artists (expressed on this site's very boards) but in my opinion that's only because they were being exposed to a bigger audience, thus being heard by more people who couldn't stand the way said artists sang or looked etc.
And despite that all, I don't remember seeing one review that didn't acknowledge the credibility of these artists in terms of making credible, sell able pop music.
And Dom's right, as for artists like the Twang, they actually live up to this stereotype of "Stella swigging, football terrace-worthy" music. This isn't just something critics make up because the songs are chantable. In fact the critical consensus on the new The Twang album wasn't that it was all laddy and hooligan-y but that it was tame and underwhelming.
That's awesome
she deserves to be exposed to bigger audiences, what Guardian are doing with her is great.
wonderful review
really fantastic writing. And I haven't even heard a single second of the record.
That's the first time I've heard Everything Everything and First Aid Kit
and as a consequence I've just found my two new favourite bands.
Bit of love for 'All The King's Men', non?
The review of 'Seven' made me chuckle, and it wasn't embarrassing because nobody was in the room at the same time as said chuckling.
Sort of really disagree with you on The Drums
But it no matter, the Bowling For Soup review more than made for it!
Planet
hahahaha
eh?
I thought you hated Kate Nash...
That We Have Band video
is aces.
Look:
I know it's easy to bash reviews but I write them myself and frankly this is a lazy, careless review, not particularly informative and almost unreadable at times. Sorry.
"barely any women in indie rock which are actually good"
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, grammatically and factually.
'Actor' proves this. Awesome album.
I'd give it a nine
But great review for a GREAT album.
the inclusion of
- a re-release
- a compilation album
- and two albums released originally last year
sort of sums up how terrible February was release-wise.
Bravo Mr.Gourlay
When I saw DiS had posted a White Lies review, I was expecting something cynical, insulting and very narrow-minded. The opening two paragraphs left me wondering whether you were going to swing positive or negative and when you went for the positive, I smiled. Lots.
They're by no means the best new band around and yes, they are over-hyped a tad. But they're also been unfairly targeted as something dreadful, which they're quite clearly not.
I don't think this list is representative of DiS writers' opinions
M83 is by no means album of the year. 'Up!' alone, decides that. I actually almost think you've purposefully placed the likes of Fleet Foxes just to make your list "different" from others.
That said, Frightened Rabbit at 2 brought a big smile to my face :)
And to whoever said it, MFM had the Wave Pictures in their top ten!!!

that is some compilation
exclusive material, you say?
GO AIDS AWARENESS!
not their best
'That Number' and the b-side 'Transatlantic Air Miles' have a lot more to them. I had no idea the main member is in DIOYY?, but I don't think that changes anything!
oh my word
I don't think I've been this excited about an album since the 9-day-wait for 'In Rainbows'!!
i have a feeling
that this'll be great
lauren laverne WASN'T annoying.
and I adore Simon Armitage.
And on top of that, I said at the very last second that my final choice of winner was Elbow and they bloody did it!
YES
A
YES
OMG you said Radiohead sucked!
that's bang out of order.
I could probably sue you, for being wrong.
I'm so angry.
You personally ABUSED me with that comment.
yeah but you think radiohead suck
so shut the fuck up.
NOT THAT ONE!
the one above with the scores and shit opinions and shit.
^
I couldn't disagree with a post more

At the age of 7,
I've just overcome my undesire for the cheese sandwiches my mummy makes me for school lunchtime. I feel proud of myself as she always gives me stickers when I finish dinner or learn to eat a new dish. If I finish my sandwiches today, i'll get enough stickers to get a spiderman toy, my first ever spiderman today. But to my despair, some seagulls have chosen to excrete on my lunchbox only. Its football sticker sits white/brown and ugly in the school lunch-box tray and the "lads" of year 2 are telling me that if I each anything out of there, I'll get a bird disease. I return home after school, tummy empty and my mummy is very disappointed in me, calls me a wimp and never makes me cheese sandwiches again. I never end up getting that spiderman toy.
If that doesn't bring a tear to your eye I don't know what will.
a great album
can't stop listening to it!
Big fan of this record
but there are indeed some moments that lack quality. More than a 6 though in my opinion.
I still
can't believe how many people I know (and love) in my elder generation that buy the Daily Mail - it really upsets me. Because after learning the basics of politics and rooting to buy the independent, I find it particularly difficult not to strangle all of them when I hear them talk about politics in the most non-sensical, ignorant manner.
The Daily Express is probably a tad worse - you get proper racists browsing about on their forum. But Daily Mail is bought by a mass audience making it all the more lethal.
poor man's Killers though?
that's a bit off the mark in my opinion.
But I can see where you're coming from with them being a bit bandwagonesque.
indeed it is. I've been saying so since I first heard it.
And your review was a breath of fresh air when compared to some of the one-dimensional comments on the record via. the music forum.
But I don't want to start another Foals debate.
This record = ace.
one hell of a record
this and Why? and dare I say it Foals have made my favourite records of the year so far.
Billy
is one of the nicest people I've ever interviewed.
yep
best thing I've heard in 2008 so far. 1/3 of the way through and I'm confident it could stay at the top of my favourites list.
grizzly bear supporting in London!
Now THAT'S worth £50
yeah
pricks
I had a big choice of singles to buy this week
and I chose this one.
How wise I am...
great review
x 1000
maybe I'm the only one (apart from Mike)
but I think this is definitely a 9/10 album.

nice review
but it wasn't really explained why this was given a 7 and not more.
Plus, I thought you were a MASSIVE fan, am I right?
do you actually believe that?
or are you basing that statement on the fact that pitchfork gave the record a generous 8.8?
