Pretty much..

..puts every other post rock/instrumental progressive band currently doing the rounds to utter shame.

This band is sooo far ahead of the game now, they've almost done a full lap of the track and some people mistake them for being behind..

oh dom...oh my..

what is this?

actually..

that so should have been the title of this feature. "biffy sellout shocker! Band adamantly denies claims.." I think I just want more needless Gourlay-esque controversy.

Listening Is a Problem Because This Albums' shite..

..it's actually not. Quite average. I've just been gagging to use that line ever since a couple of days ago.

Next up..

Oceansize with electro pop shocker.

well I suppose..

anyone who makes such a shockingly poor condemnation of a band does not deserve a second chance either. Any further points you raise (no matter how valid) as of now will be rendered completely worthless. I look forward to not hearing from you.

I dont think yo understood

my point. You might not change your opinion. However, founding one upon the basis of ONE shitty video you happen to catch on some godawful music channel doesnt make much sense does it?

It's like me saying.."you made one shit point, therefore your family must consist of equally dumb f****".

Yes..

and I used to think Blur were some overhyped Britpop sensation on par with Gallaghers, after song 2 subliminally imprinted itself on my poor adolescent brain. Thanks Mtv/commercial daytime radio!

Exactly 2 years ago..I listened to the entirity of Parklife with a slightly more refined sense of hearing, and came to realise that I was in fact an utter ****.

in which case..

You would be completely correct sir. Good point.

thanks dom..

I thought the world was about to implode due to your abscence on this thread. I feel better again, thanks for restoring the balance of the universe.

where is..

domgourlay? I demand to read his obligatory shitheap of stream-of-consciousness turgidity about how gash everyone's favourite band..oh that clever cynical bastard. I demand it. RIGHT NOW!

yes dom..

having taken a quick glance at your taste in music, it is quite apparent that commercial success/acclaim is your sole criterion in judging artistic merit.

Domgourlay..

..is a joke. I've been on this site for little more than a few weeks now, and at first I found his dismissal of Biffy Clyro as a "bad Nirvana tribute act" pretty funny..mainly because he was so off the mark.

Subsequently I took it upon myself to dig up some dirt about this fellow, L.Ron Hubbard style, I didn't have to go very far before I found this.

shakeandbake..

I agree to an extent with your ATD-I analogy. However there is one fundamental difference. And it is that ROC was a culmination of every bit of artistic promise ATD-I had shown upto that point in their careers. They hardly went for a more accessible sound...yeh Robinson brought a more polished approach, but the fury of the band's past records a la In Casino Out was still present.

agreed

It is precisely why I raised the very last point in the review. Had this been Biffy's first ever effort, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it much more, and as stupid as it sounds, the mere fact that VOB exists means I cant help but subconsciously alter my view of this record.

For first time listeners, Puzzle definately receives a 7 or 8.

Hmm..

In reality, I probably had lost all form of rational thought...

This album confuses me greatly to a point up of sheer cognitive dissonance. It's great, yet oh-so shit.

Furthermore..

one must note that Biffy are band who have constantly changed throughout their career. The shift in sound between Blackened Sky and IL is quite significant, no one here is moaning about the process of change itself..rather the end product.

shake and bake..

you therefore conceed that the U-turn in sound and the change of labels/ditching of long time producer prior to this is one happy coincidence?

You are all forgetting something.

Change does not necessarily warrant critical merit. Bands can change for the worse..

The album version of the track seems to exemplify this very phenomenon. I assume the first two minutes were supposed to create a sense of tension..instead its so dumbed down and lacking in substance, what we get is a brilliant parody of the overly dramatic scores that accompany equally serious news documentaries (anyone who has watched the brilliant Brass Eye will know what I am talking about).

And to the person who said their recent accessible sound was a natural progression for the band; yes it may have been. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE FACT THAT IT COINCIDED WITH THE BAND SWITCHING TO WARNER MUSIC GROUP, DITCHING CHRIS SHELDON AS PRODUCER AND FOLLOWING YEARS OF ABUSE, BEING TOUTED BY THE NME AS THE NEXT BIG THING TO COME OUT OF SCOTLAND SINCE FRANZ F***NG FERDINAND.
