ghastly video!

She should do a whole album

of songs while punching

If this music would send the 'average listener' to sleep, then surely the record company is making a big mistake in its desperately cynical campaign to appeal to the 'average' audience that you describe.

The fact is that this sort of thing *doesn't* send the average listener to sleep. The 'average' listener will enjoy and buy into this and everyone involved will become very rich and successful. SCUMBAG 'AVERAGE LISTENERS'! SCUMBAG COMPETENT MUSICIANS!

The Great Indie Identity Crisis Pt.78697

If the reviewer gave it a certain score, surely it should remain? Why not ditch the review if it's not up to scratch..?

I like Artrocker

cos they liked my old band and I enjoyed reading Delia Dansette's stuff.

I haven't read it for a while.

I also like Mike Diver. Cos he wiped his hands on his jeans before shaking my hand at The Great Escape. Now, that is the sign of a true gentleman.

Preview me, dammit

While we're on the subject,

I went to see this amazing band the other night. I think they could really be the next big thing, alright! Has anyone heard of them?

www.myspace.com/friendsofthebride

I should sing the new Bond theme.

BLATANTLY.

So I should take all DiS writing

with a pinch of salt? Is that what you mean? Is that the editorial mission statement? To entertain rather than enlighten?

Can the work of DiS writers in general be compared to 'making a few jokes and slagging something off'? Maybe so...

The review above was very clearly not written with the intention of being taken lightly and laughed off as a bit of fun amongst friends. The writer has positioned himself on a very lofty horse and then proceeded to hurl nutty abuse at the band and their adherents (amongst other things).

I'm not offended by obscenities. That's the whole point. Who is? That's what makes a reliance on them so pointless in this context.

Indeed.

It's just lazy. It's easier to use naughty words than to actually present a reasonable argument... much like in everyday life. I've realised over the years that DiS reviews are usually written for entertainment purposes (most readers apparently prefer 'shock' tactics), so don't expect too much actual journalism.

As for the Gainsbourg and Eurotrash appraisals; the jokes on you, buddy!

"museum piece artist"

lol

Aaah

I knew DiS secretly loved unashamed 'retro-ism'.

Too retro

"various bodies"

tut

"retro-chart hell"

lol

Wasted opportunity

for a Nu-Kroon gag.

-=sigh=-

Quincy Jones-ish?

Does it feature the Count Basie Orchestra?

The article

suggests that he implied Spector. Spector and his Wall of Sound are generally associated with the '60s (although - yes- its considerable impact is still 'reverberating' today).

Unless the writer is completely mis-representing what he said.

_

As simon_t points out - how exactly is 'wall of sound' production not a 'sixties element'??

Am I mis-reading this?

Anyway, this cat needs to lose charley and latch on to nu-kroon.

So essentially - the business comes first (keeping PRs and labels happy, getting as many readers as poss). The credibility second. That's fine by me and I understand that stance totally.

It's just I think a lot of people thought you guys were music fans first and foremost. That would logically necessitate thwarting bands that you see as second-rate by not giving them any publicity whatsoever. That wouldn't be difficult in simple terms, but yes - financial stability is understandably paramount.

I do understand your points, but I will never understand how you can claim to be so vehemently anti the likes of Hard-Fi (and other usual suspects), yet actively promote their wares on your website.

If you were simply passing on news, then that would be different, but you're not - you're saying 'Don't buy this - it's gash' one minute and then posting loads of tour dates and details of the new single the next. The Hard-Fi example is particularly indicative of a split personality that makes a mockery of your credibility. In my eyes. But I'm just bonkers, so ignore me.

Exactly.

OK.

Good answer. It just doesn't sit easy with me, cos it makes you all look like silly schoolboys which - in your writing at least - we know you're not.

Lose the dodgy news stories, the Hard-Fi tour dates (or make up your mind whether you want to promote or thwart them), though and I for one would start reading the articles again.

It's my conspiracy theory.

Haven't you heard? :D

The DiS downward spiral continues!

Bring back Crablin!

And stick to bigging up Hard-Fi - I'm getting confused by all 'shit' bands DiS is so keen to promote... The real irony is the fact that DiS ignores a hell of a lot of decent new bands and prefers to constantly bang on about 'shit' ones! I'm convinced this is symptomatic of the DiS journey into the cash-lined bowels of the 'corporate machine'...

I just think DiS should

spare themselves the embarrassment of appearing so weak, frankly.

The irony of you

publicising all their tour dates, albums, singles and whatever else far outweighs the petty digs you have at them... I just don't get it... But good luck to everyone! :D

The joke's always on DiS, though!

Cos they're the one's publicising the band at every opportunity! LOL

Sad news.

His was one of the greatest voices ever. RIP

We still haven't got our prize from winning

the London leg of the talent trek last year...

Roll on

the Biff Bang Pow! reunion!

It was the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra.

Much better than the Stones..

I'm sorry?

Didn't quite catch that.

Crablin

wouldn't have stood for slacking like this
