is this a "lost" album? it only just came out and was reviewed, VERY WELL, almost everywhere? the band are over in february? what constitutes a "lost" album? youth movies?

just to be clear, i'm on about general consumers and the nature of consumerism and not people that have clear morals on the "free music" issue. i personally think that its great that people paid for Saul's record and Radiohead's for that matter.

In both cases, personally, I would at least liked a chance to stream a track or 2 (or all?) to know what i was getting if I was gonna pay for it? You can listen to a CD in a record shop before you pay for it to decide if you want to part with your cash.

Which is why i reckon the 9 tracks free, rest you pay for idea is better. obviously you have to try and test these things before they become apparent, i understand that (though did think it at the time).

it was just the way it was like "hey have it for free if you like - assuming you don't want to support the artist". bit of a guilt trip. but at the same time it was very cool to have done it like that.

but honestly? why would most pay for that? if you can get a 192kbs file for free, which is a damn good quality, then why would you jump for more afterward? you needed to download the 192 if you were not a fan or if you hadn't heard Saul before, so after that why go back and get a bigger version of the same thing? thats all i mean...

Its like someone offering you an upgrade option on your 14 inch cube TV to a 40 inch a normal plasma for free or go for a plasma HD for a cost. what would you do? i'm sure i'd replace my 20 inch cube with a free no-HD plasma! and i think a lot of other people would too.

anyway, just my take. still think its exciting that these people are taking this jump. I actually even think 5 bucks is a bit low from a business point of view, especially when you consider that iTunes makes shit loads of sales off a 192kbs album at 9.99 USD.

that boxset looks sweeeet. and the whole set 9 songs free, the rest you pay for thing is a better idea than the guilt trip that was the niggy tardust initiative. why the fuck would someone pay for 320 when 192 is more than enough... and free.

On a related note, I saw in the NME a write up about Carl Barat and him wanting to "do a Radiohead" by McGee not letting him... I seriously don't know why I care about this, but I wanna know why its "the new business model!!!" for one, and a bad idea for another... apart from the fact he has no idea what he's on about and what day of the week it is.

that DiS have been told a fake release date in order to secure coverage (ie maybe they were full for news/features/reviews for today or last week, or even a fortnight ago) and the record is already available via whomever distributes whomever is releasing it. it worked, see!

i listened to the whole thing online today, on the brookynvegan site. it's good - much better for not having the vocals, in my opinion (each to their own).

these guys really do have a one-dimensional approach to punk-rock composing!

have the right to make money, so I'd say its more up to them to make the choice as to whether they sell one of their own compositions to an ad. obviously they'd need to take into consideration people seeing it as "wrong" - but if they can live with it, then cool. composing music for whatever purpose will need to yield some sort of revenue. whether it's for the ultimate good of the artist or not remains in the public's hands... of all the ads on at the mo with "indie" syncs, only 1 in 10, if that, will have any sort of decent chart impact, I'd wager...

but seriously, he has the money and the contacts to do this all himself (or by someone else with his full guidance) should he choose. basically he's not got the impetus and he's having a wee moan. the record company guy's line is a bit crap though, but that IS how a lot of large-indies and most majors think.

it's easier to moan than to do something about it. it's quite the artist's trait.

I wonder if he feels a lot happier with his situation in Europe now considering the new record has essentially tanked across the entire continent?

this is way more like more adventurous and way less like execution. it's really, really over produced, super polished, very much the sound of a band who don't actually care about anything much other than being famous.
