Deserves at least an 8

Personally, I don't think there's a weak track on the album. Good though 'Wolves' was, this is a giant leap forward.

I do agree with the reviewer's comments about Chris's voice not being totally engaging though. I think more alternation of vocal duties with Gary would have turned this into a 9.

Hmm

One thing's still bothering me, did they sell out in Nottingham or not?

It did

... cost about £3 from their website last year. That's when all the cool kids (and the ones that read Teletext) bought it. And it still is the best £3 I've ever spent, although the original version is only 6 tracks long, missing 'Face The Facts'.

or not

Sub Pop sent out pre-order copies early. I'm in the UK and it arrived on Wednesday morning. Complete with free stickers and a set of steak knives.

Pedant's corner

The Leeds Cockpit date listed for March 2nd is actually now at The Leadmill in Sheffield. The Blood Arm are down for The Cockpit on that day.

Anyway, good though Tilly and The Wall are, I want a headline tour. I know they're doing a one off date in London but you've got to take it to the regions.

*apologies for the Zaneism, won't happen again.

*supporting

rather than supporing, although they may be doing that too.

Yeah

I did that too. Best £3 (plus P&P from the US) I've ever spent. Can't wait for some more.

They're supporing The Boy Least Likely To over here in the new year and, supposedly doing a few headline dates.

And...

Steve Mackey's hardly AWOL either, being actively involved in Jarvis' solo album and DJing with him regularly.

On another note of pedantry 'Cocaine Socialism' was previously available, on a B Side, I've definitely got it somewhere, possibly Help The Aged.

Other than that, fantastic review. And I agree with most, this is their best album.

Eccleshall?

It's Ecclesall. And there are no back-street brothels there (to my knowledge). It's the posh part of town. Attercliffe on the other hand ...

Indeed it is

One of the highlights from one of the albums of last year, which has recently been re-released with one or two re-recorded versions of some of the songs (this being one of them, I believe).

Anyway, it's lovely so buy it.

And ...

Gary Lightbody guests on the Rock Action album.

Yeah, not that relevant. Just thought I'd say, like.

As you were.

True

Buy the US or Canada release - it's different. I got this album long before it came out over here, thanks to a tip-off by a knowledgeable friend and finally got to see them live last week. Amazing.

Hmm

I still haven't got into his latest album but all the people currently eulogising about it should definitely check out former efforts 'Lowedges', 'Late Night Final' and his self titled debut if they haven't already.

The Arcade Fire

Only just found this review.

I have to echo what everyone else has been saying. I was also at this show and the Manchester one in May - both amazing. The Manc one was incredible for it being the first time and never seeing anything like it before. This gig, just swings it though, despite a shorter set, the more intimate surroundings made it an even more unforgettable experience.

And yes, there is no better beginning to a gig than 8 people singing the start of 'Wake Up' in unison. Aaaahhh's can sound beautiful - take note Kasier Chiefs.

Architecture In Helsinki - In Case We Die

I love this album too. Definitely one of my favourites of the year.

And although I agree that the album does tail off towards the end, I strongly disagree with the comments about Tiny Paintings.

Between this and Fingers Crossed, they could have made a phenomenal album, rather than just two great ones.

Re: Steve Lamacq - "Punk, really, changed my life"

" I want him back four days a week on Radio 1."

He's on 6 Music 5 days a week. Get yourself a DAB radio.

Re: Steve Lamacq - "Punk, really, changed my life"

"Mornings Become Eclectic is the way and the light. Some Australian dude. KCRW."

Some Australian dude? Nic Harcourt's English isn't he? He's lived in the states a while, hence that weird hybrid accent.

Great show though, I agree.

Re: Arcade Fire: no more gigs 'til next album

Wasn't Intervention introduced as a 'new song' on the KCRW session they did though?

Not sure of the relative ages of other tracks, like 'Asleep At The Wheel', 'Burning Bridges, Breaking Hearts' or 'Virgin Mary Highway' though.

Re: Arcade Fire: no more gigs 'til next album

I meant I'd heard that before I fully got into Funeral, before all the hype. I had no idea what the EP was or wasn't called, someone just sent it to me. I've since bought it at a gig (and the remastered version that's now in the shops - yes I am that gullible)

Re: Arcade Fire: no more gigs 'til next album

Pedant. I knew what I meant.

Re: Arcade Fire: no more gigs 'til next album

Me too!

Fanfuckingtastic both times.

Their self titled EP, which I heard around the same time as Funeral last year, indicates there will be no let up in quality.

I know the pressure's on more due to all the acclaim but there are some new tracks floating around that sound more than promising, even in their primitive, or live, state.

My Latest Novel - Sister Sneaker Sister Soul

I like this. A lot.

Constructive huh?

Re: New mag alert: Amped turns up the volume

Isn't that still going?

Or has my local newsagent had the same issue on it's shelves for the last six months?

Re: New mag alert: Amped turns up the volume

And the reviews are genuinely lead by what the staff like. E.g. page review for Richard Hawley. Would Q do that?

I personally hate Q but I read it at work the other day and they did have a surprisingly large review of Mr Hawley's new album.

Minus The Bear, plus new album

Had this for a while. It is good but I still prefer Highly Refined Pirates.

Re: Brendan Benson - Alternative To Love

Both wrong. One Mississippi is Mr Benson's Opus.

Every home should have Alternative To Love and Lapalco though.

Re: The Night The Reindeer Died: Bloc Party and Kaisers to get festive?

And very good it was too.

This, on the other hand, is a shit idea. One I can see the Kaiser Chiefs going along with but Bloc Party? I'll eat my trilby if that happens.

Re: One HAL of a tour

Unmitigated, bland shite, simple as

Snow... way! 'Patrol bassist sacked

Holy cow (ho ho). This is strange, strange news. Having loved SP since the start, it's particularly gutting. Mark is an absolutely top bloke. And no one plays a xylophone quite like that man. One hopes they don't go shit. For all the predicatble backlashes from 'indier than thou' types, Final Straw is still a great album and they are one band to whom the success achieved over the last year was long overdue and richly deserved.

Lamacq goes five days a week on 6music

I don't understand all this anti-Andrew Collins feeling. He's a witty and intelligent broadcaster with vast knowledge of the music he plays. His programme is a pleasure to listen to and will be much missed.

I have the utmost respect for Lamacq but, like a previous contributor, would much prefer him to replace Tom Robinson. Andrew Collins is perfect on that teatime show, especially the frequently hilarious Friday Roundtable which won't be the same without him.

Agree with the comments overall about 6 Music. Glad so many people are aware of its greatness. Especially Gideon Coes excellent morning show.

Arcade Fire: release early on iTunes

Yep. Tis an amazing piece of work. I downloaded it from Soulseek a good few months ago but ordered it from the US before Christmas. It came today - beautifully packaged too with an inlay thing that resembles a funeral service pamphlet.

And yes the 7 track self-titled demo (also available at Soulseek kids) is great too. Just need to get my hands on a copy...

Not so Idle-wild

Jenny Reeve of Eva and Reindeer Section fame? Yes, she's tall with long red hair.

Low - The Great Destroyer

Excellent review. I've had this for a week and every time I've listened to it, I've been overcome by the urge to listen to it all over again.

They've never made a bad record in my opinion but this sounds like their most consistent work yet.

Can't wait to finally see them live next month.

Lou Barlow - Emoh

Sebadoh overrated? Nah, underrated if anything.

I like Lou's solo record but I'd kill for another Harmacy or Bakesale.

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Hmm on first listen to the current single I agreed with those sentiments but on reflection I think So Here We Are is an amazing piece of music. And the good thing is there is even better stuff on the album.
