*Captain *aren't going to break boundaries, span genres and create life-changing anthems. In fact, they're a bit bland. They're for people who like ready-salted crisps, who subscribe to Reader's Digest; people who like things nice and modest, not too flashy or offensive.
The indie Deacon Blue return with the obvious third single 'Frontline' from their debut album This Is Hazelville. It's another slice of synth-laden saccharine pop, that's been produced to the hilt and is so clean and shiny it could blind you.
This record is a perfect example of Captain and what they're capable of: radio-friendly, affable yet insipid guitar tracks which are about as likely to cause a stir as a Jeffery Archer book signing. 'Frontline' gasps for life by throwing in a very ill-advised and out of place guitar solo, which can only be described as 'Slash-esque'; this is layered on top of a riff that sounds like someone messing around with The Edge's effects pedal.
The band's only saving grace could be the vocal abilities of Rik Flynn and Clare Szembek, which would give Captain a much needed injection of passion and emotion if they were allowed to retain their raw quality.
If you like your guitar-pop basic, hook-driven and ultimately tamer than Lassie, then pop down the shops and pick up a copy of 'Frontline'. Don't forget the value pack of ready-salted, too.

Don't forget the vituose bass-playing by Alex..!
poo poo !!
Thats what I think of this song.
Well I think the
Captain album is pretty good actually and I don't subscribe to the Readers Digest. I think its pretty lazy to try and dump them in with The Feeling or whoever else.
Yeah its Indie thats polished to within an inch of its fretboard but its not pretending to be anything else. The album reminds me alot of Seafoods album When Do We Start Fighting, which imo can only be a good thing
...
whilst not necessarily disagreeing with the thrust of your argument i've got to stop you on the "its not pretending to be anything else" point.
Honesty is not a redeeming quality, no matter what they told you when you were very young. If a band declares "We're going to make crappy music" and then does so it's still crappy music. Honesty does not elevate, justify or redeem a piece of bad art, or much else.
..
I see what you're saying, but my point was that its polished indie guitar music that isn't pretending to be anything else. Thats what they are and thats what they do. By that I mean theres no gimmicks or hairdos or fashions.
Obviously its just down to personal opinion as to whether the music is crap or not.
i like it
this isn't an obvious third single - it was their first single at the start of this year. The album is nice - i don't listen to it often but when I do I enjoy it.
When Do We Start Fighting?
No way! Seafood always had alot more 'edge' than Captain!
I like Captain, though.
I have a funny
feeling they'll get dropped. Parlophone right? or emi? they've haven't really done anything to justify the expense that it seems has been spent on this album. imo
Although,
I could see you what you mean with the lovely male/female vocal interplay.
well stated
...doubt the label will recoup their advance. Doesn't cross into the Dido demographic enough, nor is it indie schmindie enough for the scenesters to lap up.
Can't decide if things improved
after Tenille got dropped........showing my age there
