So, I was surprised to find that I have absolutely no opinion about Missy Elliott. I'm aware of her, of course; I've seen enough five-second clips of her jiggling about on TV adverts to make up some kind of disjointed megamix of her entire career. I know she's quite keen on the idea of being respected. Or 'speckd, maybe. But musically? Never really digested a note of it. Or a beat of it, I guess, seeing as she's "THE reigning queen of hip-hop". Funny. I mean, most pop stars you can either like or dislike or whatever, you know. But the Missy juggernaut seems to have completely passed me by.
And on the strength of this single, I'm quite happy for that to be the case. It consists of a sample of 'Apache' (a Wild West-type thing - you'd know it if you heard it) and some bongos. And Missy rapping on about something or other. You know, her running this. 'This' being an overhyped crock of shit song, in this case. The instrumental version on the b-side is like a new and interesting form of torture.
The press release gleefully screams out that this single is tied in with a Disney movie about female emancipation, starring Jeff Bridges. And I am led to wonder, is that what Missy is? A Disney-esque caricature of today's Strong Woman, some kind of ABC-simple symbol with a suitably sympathetic life story, full of hardship; the eternal underdog turned hip-hop queen, marketed just right so everyone feels like they are part of that success, willing her on?
Maybe, maybe not. Anyway, I'm sure she's done better stuff than this somewhere along the line. I remember a song with Mel B that was passable and had a cool Tron-looking video. But really, this single is absolutely abominable, simplistic, charm- and hook-free, and I wish I'd never heard it.

....
she's done some really good stuff....... just not this.
Using Apache?!
man, that is lazy...
but yes, Missy has been on some classics - you must have heard 'get ur freak on' and 'work it'. Supa Dupa Fly and Da Real World are ace, Under Construction and Miss E are good too.
But she stopped being good, and stopped working with Timbaland, and started doing adverts an' that... :(
pffffft
"i'm interested in stuff you've never even heard of and wouldn't like anyway."
ha
which is
irrelevant to the point in hand.
To be honest, i'm glad you admitted your ignorance rather than pretending to authority; but it would be nice to hear the views of someone with a grounding in hippety-hop. I guess DiS isn't really the site for that...
I think
this is good. Also without meaning to be rude, that's an absolutely lousy review.
I think
it is bad. And without meaning to read, that's an absolutely lousy post.
It's fucking crap.
FACT.
Comeback quips just don't work with typos in them.
And you lot slagging off my review should go and find something better to do with your time, to be honest. If you don't agree with me, that is your right. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with that review. I was given Missy Elliot to review, and I reviewed it to the best of my ability. I'm not about to go and research someone's career for an unpaid single review, especially someone who has just released a piece of shit somg like this.
Well, DiS gave it to me.
So I reviewed it. I don't pretend to know a lot about commercial hip-hop, but that is no reason at all why my opinion on it as a piece of music, and my comments on Missy as a cultural reference point, should be invalid.
Wait a minute...
I sent John this to review.
I thought to myself, 'I'd like to read what John has to say on this'.
I know he's not Mr Hip-Hop, but he has a remarkable brain inside his head - not that I can peer into his ear to see it, as he's too tall.
He's a great critic, and I appreciate this piece as much as I would a 9/10 appraisal from someone who considered it a work of fucking genius. Indeed, I appreciate this MORE, as it's honest.
If you can't find honesty in an opinion, what's the fucking point?
It's a shit song, btw. It ain't no One Minute Man, nor is it decent enough to lick Work It's boots.
i don't think seibu's post
was reasonably constructed. Saying 'that was a lousy review' and then not saying why is pretty facile.
Hello there
I thought it was crushingly self-evident why it was a bad review. But if you insist: It is a terrible review because it takes absolutely no interest in the artist or the music, and it's clear that John Fake Surname has no taste for, or knowledge about Missy Elliott. Or I assume, hip hop in general.
Do you see?
SO nobody without an encyclopaedic knowledge of hip--hop
has any right to comment on it?
Gah. You are annoying.
So THIS is the review?
I see...
