So what happened to Duels?
This time last year all of the smart money would have been placed on this lot hitching a ride on the Kaiser Chiefs’ coat tails to stardom, yet despite a couple of well-received singles and several high-profile tours, little progress seems to have been made.
They’re definitely not lacking in the tunes department, as ‘Animal’ proves quite adamantly, so it must be something else. My guess is that they’re trying to sound a little too quirky and anachronistic for their own good, as where most bands would fit a middle eight Duels seem to have the sound of a talking – or should that be mumbling? – Stephen Hawking doll.
Still, bonus points for the “Me animal, you animal” vocal interplay between Jon Fuller and Katherine Botterill, even if it is more reminiscent of a playground spat between the two head prefects than any_ ‘Je T’Aime’ _style sexual innuendo smooch fest.

I think....
....the failure of the world to warm to Duels must be because Jon's head is disconcertingly small relative to his body. Frighteningly so.
I think
this song sucks arse. Hugely.
yes.
I fell asleep in the upstairs bar at Frog when Deuls were on.
I think ALL they were likely to do was cling to the Kaiser's coat-tails and hope for the best.
It hasn't worked.
Probably
for the best that Jon and Katherine's lyrics aren't a "sexual innuendo smooch fest". They are related, after all.
Oh, and I like this single. The first two seemed a bit too cleaned and asking to be liked, this sounds more like a band trying to do what they want to do.
I think...
I love this song so much! I reckon Duels are one of the best bands of the past few years - seriously, up there with Arcade Fire and Dr Dog. Whoever claims to have almost fallen asleep at one of their gigs, must be hooked on nytol - the singer's intense scares are enough to give you (actually pretty f'ing good) nightmares and they've got so much electricity - Jon FOULGER (not Fuller) flings himself around the stage to the point of sadism and the guitarist literally vibrates at the solos.
Let the monsters loose...
The above post...
... is by Duels street team. Bless.
Thing is
depending on which PR blurb/biog you read - and yes, I'm well aware Jon and Jim are brothers - their called Fuller and/or Foulger! Maybe Mr & Mrs Fuller/Foulger would like to have the lost word on what their offspring choose to be known as???
This person is...
cynical. with bad music taste evidently.
Perhaps you
could be a bit more specific as to who/what you're referring to and we'll gladly be of assistance.
Fuller?
Never have heard that one before. Foulger, Faulger, Jacobs, yes. Fuller's a new one. But shh, it's about the music, isn't it.
..?
What had you taken in order to sleep through that?!
I really don't see why people need to mention the Kaisers in every single review..
Agreed.
And I do like Duels. Live at least, although strangely none of their "proper" releases since being signed have matched the strength of the stuff on the demo that got them signed.
oops
I meant AlbanyCorale. cynical, very cynical.
Aye.
...
Agreed, it's about the music...
... and this song sucks arse. They had a decent B side I heard once that I thought should be a single, but that's all I've liked from them.
B-side..
Things? Should be a single, you're right. The new stuff they're coming out with is ace. Animal has nevber been my favourite, but it is a lot of people's and it does appeal to most.
Agreed. Again.
Live they are fantastic, I can't fault them. They do have good singles so far, but maybe not exceptional. I have a sneaky feeling the next one, however, WILL be the one...
I think people are bored
With the kind of sound they have. I saw them live in the summer and in all honesty they just sounded like reheated Kaisers/Futureheads.
Things - yes. The rest of their new stuff...
No. There's a lot of different versions of their stuff kicking round the office and it all gets confusing. The raw demo stuff seemed OK, but they've gone completely the wrong way now with the songs. Saw them with Coxon the other night and it wasn't just me that walked off after giving them (another) chance.
