For all their talent, Oceansize, or more particularly their label, Beggars Banquet, make some pretty stupid business decisions. After releasing a four year old track as the first single from the band's second album Everyone Into Position and spending a foolish amount on a promo video that no-one would see before 1am, they follow up with one of the weakest tracks on the album.

'New Pin' isn’t a bad song; it works well as an album track, but it’s definitely not a single. Whereas tracks from EIP such as 'Homage To A Shame' and 'No Tomorrow' ensnare the listener with multi-layered riffing akin to three Matt Bellamys with six more balls and bombastic rhythm sections that would leave TooL fans salivating, 'New Pin' merely floats around doing a whole lot of nothing. It still has the trademark melodies but among the lulling vocals and lazy military-style snare taps there is very little to entice new fans.

In fact, it seems the only group this would appeal to is Oceansize completists. The b-side 'Superfluous to Requirements' seems to take notes from 65daysofstatic in two ways; the combination of snapping guitars with electronic jutters and the fact that it is a much better song than its a-side.

So for those looking for the best path into Oceansize’s catalogue this should be given a miss. There’s no doubting that they are one of the strongest bands still drudging the UK toilet circuit, but with poor marketing judgements such as this it could be a long time before they get the recognition they truly deserve.

a fair assessment

this is my least favourite song off EIP, superfluous is however a brilliant song and worth buying the single just for that song.
It's also worth noting that the video for this was done independently because like was said, beggars seem to be a bit shit at marketing, ie you go to buy the single at the shops on the day it comes out, but every shop you go to is still waiting for a delivery.

I really do believe

that Oceansize are way past their sell-by date now. This just sounds like an old Mansun b-side with added layers of guitar fx.

what a load of bollocks

First of all I severely doubt oceansize would choose to release singles. But they have to so they're going to release the most accessable songs.

New Pin is the catchiest song on the album. Plus it has way more chance of radio/mtv action than any other track.

her here....

Maybe you should go and see them at the Scala tonight and remind yourself that they're not.

I heard some film director (who did one of the Batman films) wants to use Music For A Nurse in a new film.

New Pin is a good song, but Beggars need a single = catch 22. Just because it doesn't get radio play doesn't mean its shit Dom.

really?

have you heard the album? dont you think the two tracks i mentioned would be more suitable for a single release? Maybe they are too heavy in parts to be classed as 'accessible' but they are by far superior songs (usually i would say this is down to opinion but i think i can say its near enough a fact) and would get a lot more fans interested.

also, maybe yr right about them not wanting to release singles. but if they had to, why would they be bothered about choosing the most accessible?

of course i've heard the album!

1st off I wasn't meaning you were talking a load of bollocks that was aimed at Dom.

When EIP was released I singled New Pin out as the best track besides 'ornament/the last wrongs'. That was based purely on instant appeal. I think otherwise now.

I'm sure it's Beggars who want the accessible single but why would the band not want one out as well? They've got nothing to prove. They're probably the best band in the world right now. More people should be hearing their songs.

well

im not seeing how you can class New Pin as one of the best tracks, or reason it not being the worst, but i agree with you on Ornament/Last Wrongs.

and i know you were saying Dom was talking a load of bollocks, but thats a given. Its just that with yr first two sentences you were contradicting yrself basically. but hey, its better to have an opinion and be wrong than not have one at all :)

have you managed to catch them live?

the charm offensive

might have been a decent single, it's not that long, memorable riff.

you're right, the two singles so far are weak points on the album and are not heavy enough to be representative at all.

It's aaaaaaaallll

about ornament/ the last wrongs.

this song is easily a grower though. like the whole album. It ain't got the balls against the walls feel that we came to expect from the 'size, but it still blows you away after a few listens.
and they KICK it live. two microphones!!!

Oceansize

were part of that whole post-Muse, post-Coopers big blustery rock thing. The aforementioned became successful, Oceansize didn't. And at least the tunes back then were fairly discernable. Now they're just a parody of their old selves.

yes jordan

I've caught them live many many times.

I don't see my contradiction though. Nor do I understand why my opinion is wrong on the basis that you think otherwise!

I was just presenting the case of the average oceansize fan.

But anyway lets just agree that 'Superfluous to Requirements' is fucking amazing and that Dom was most likely dropped head first at birth.

hrmm

how did my post end up above ones posted before it? kerazy.

You're not wrong joe I reckon the charm offensive would've been a great single!

All I can say

is judging by Oceansize's subsequent record sales messrs Jordan and Drill, there must have been a lot of us dropped head first at birth.

hey dom

do you just like to slag things off, or do you actually have something relevant to say?
Methinks you have a beef with oceansize for some reason

what the hell

has being a decent band got to do with how many records they sell?

Go back to watching hollyoaks, it's obviously more on your level

do you have a beef

with oceansize? all you seem to do is slag em off. Muse and Coopers are utter fashionista shite with little or no staying power whatsoever.

For a band

with "no staying power whatsoever", Muse have done pretty well for themselves, do you not think?

As for Oceansize, I've never eaten beef or any kind of meat with them for that matter.

not for me

Muse are an instantly throwaway band. Their albums have lasted about 4 listens in my stereo, then I realised that they use similar keys and arpeggios in almost all of their songs and Matt Bellamy's voice is so annoying.

Like I said, what the hell has how many records a band has sold got to do with how good they are? By your reckoning, the spice girls must be the best band ever.

Muse are an overrated monotonous dirge, every oceansize song is different and interesting, which constitutes 'staying power'.

why do you need to feel the need to slag off oceansize then? To me it sounds as if you've hardly listened to their stuff (too much going on for you?) and probably haven't seen them live.

Pigeonholing is so childish and btw, have you heard much of Muse and Coopers lately? no I thought not, how about Oceansize? Oh right, a brilliant new album and a fresh tour to promote a new single.

oceansize's current state

is really frustrating; their debut made it fucking obvious how much talent and creative capability they've got, and music for nurses proved they were capable of pushing it forward and moulding it into something up-to-date and challenging. and since then... they seem to have fallen off the horse somewhat. new pin is COMPLETELY forgettable, and pretty much an insult to what they've shown they're capable of, and last time i saw them their live show didn't fare much better. seems like they've lost their way, i wish they'd hurry up and find it again.

haha

Dom is a hollyoaks fan. and the whole you being wrong cos im right thing was just a joke really

amen

Jordan*

ps- they were great live last night.

What the hell has

Hollyoaks got to do with Oceansize?

I think the words "you've", "lost", "the" and "argument" spring to mind matey.

lol

a) You can't "lose" arguments on matters of taste.
b) Judging quality by record sales is simply laughable. By that argument the best music in the world comes from the likes of the Backstreet Boys.
c) Dropped head first at birth sounds likely.

...

New Pin is mint.

Domgourlay..

..is a joke. I've been on this site for little more than a few weeks now, and at first I found his dismissal of Biffy Clyro as a "bad Nirvana tribute act" pretty funny..mainly because he was so off the mark.

Subsequently I took it upon myself to dig up some dirt about this fellow, L.Ron Hubbard style, I didn't have to go very far before I found this.

yes dom..

having taken a quick glance at your taste in music, it is quite apparent that commercial success/acclaim is your sole criterion in judging artistic merit.
