Gosh, The Darkness, how you’ve grown… AOR.
Everyone has a favourite Queen song – mine’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ – but nobody has a favourite Brian May song. It doesn’t work like that – Brian with Queen, great; Brian on his own writing songs to sell cars to fat 40-year-old insurance salesmen to headbang gently to while passing junction 14 of the M6, fuckawful. This, the properly retro-rocking quartet’s latest single from their dive-bombing (or is that ‘dire’ and ‘bombing’?) second album, One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back, sounds too close to a May solo effort to be any fun whatsoever. Granted, there’s an awesomely OTT riff two minutes in, but even one delivered by axeman extraordinaire May himself couldn’t polish this turd.
Remember when a new Darkness single meant sucking your balls up and high-kicking out the jams ‘til your catsuit came apart at the groin? Really wasn’t that long ago, was it? Shame how they grow up so fast these days…
- Drowned in Friday: Party? Drink? I'm in Love? TFI?
- Freshly Inked: The Temper Trap
- Europe to be plunged into Darkness?
- Ilosaarirock 2007 shapes up
- Justin Hawkins lined up for Celebrity Big Brother
- Justin Hawkins will start work on a solo record
- Further Darkness doom and gloom: band gets dropped
- The Darkness' Justin Hawkins quits
I thought this song could be improved by adding:
"Or are we shit?"
To the title.
Just me?
Mike's right
Heard some old Darkness the other day. It's like AC/DC with Bon Scott or something. I think it's wicked. Now they're like overblown 80s shitebags Def Leopard.
Shame. The difficult second album eh?
it's quite a feat to successfully ride a shit cliche twice. congrats to them for at least surviving after the hype died down
Bah
I love this single.
I love the album.
I can't think of anything witty to add.
Hammer To Fall
for crying out loud!
This sucks a lot of balls, that's for sure. Bring back Poulain (or whatever that facially hirsute fool was called).
I
like this one...its better than one way ticket...
GGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrr
i do not know how anyone could call this muck music!
re:
that's what she said
Well,
it has a sequence of chords, notes, lyrics... a defined verse/chorus/verse/chorus/instrumental section/chorus structure. I do not know how anyone could call your comment a valid evaluation of this single. Your opinion is idiotic; please refrain from your stupidity. Thanks.
Strange
OK - its music.
If this had come off the first album you'd all think it was the bees knees.
Frankie
Like Poulain made them rock more though. He just stood there looking depressed most of the time.
With Hindsight - The Solution Would Have Been...
The Darkness, coming back into the studio from their Spinal-Tap-esque, upside down, head-up-arse world, decide to make a SERIOUS rock record - instead of taking their cues from Kiss, AC/DC, The 'Tap, and *cough* Queen - using Appetite Of Destruction as the blueprint, and producing a genuinely imaginative, dark, balls-to-the-wall rock record. What this would have offered is a genuine, serious alternative to the Arctic Libertines indie bopper crowd, and to the Staindleback dirge America is currently churning out...
If nothing else, it would have got people talking about them again and generated genuine intrigue as to their intentions. Instead of repeating the same joke that wasn't THAT funny the first time.
