Okay, let's get it out of the way first. Editors singer Tom Smith has a baritone voice and will thus be compared to Paul Banks or, if he's very lucky, Ian Curtis. Their music is gloomy, romantic and urgent, making comparisons with either singer's respective band inevitable.

But it doesn't matter who you sound like as long as you're good, and here is their second great single. Following on from the success of 'Bullets', a spine-chilling guitar riff introduces 'Munich' to the world. Smith's lyrics are just as foreboding. "I'm so glad I found this" he claims, but you get the feeling he might be lying.

"It breaks when you force it / it breaks if you don't try" he ponders a little later, seemingly recommending a compromise between the two extremes. There's nothing middle of the road about this song, though; to my ears it's one of the best 2005 has offered thus far.

Editors - Munich

Top drawer, this.

Editors - Munich

Brilliant song.
I know what you mean about Paul Banks etc but i think there's flashes of Guy Garvey as well.

Editors - Munich

Just another example of the aceness of music coming out of Birmingham at the moment - see also Misty's Big Adventure, new Distophia album, and the greatness of bands like Augustine, Shady Bard and Pioneers of Industry. Everyone should come and live here!

Editors - Munich

Can't understand the hype here. They sound like every other band around at the moment - a poor mans Joy Division.

Editors - Munich

hehe, i am a big fan of that song but you make a great argument.

Editors - Munich

I hate the vast majority of the Joy Division/jerky doublestop guitar riff bands out there right now and Bullets wasn't that great but this single is fucking great. Tom Smith has a depth to his voice that brings this song up higher than the also-rans. Musically it has more as well, a Doves-like quality to it. A really great single, something I haven't felt like saying for a long time.

Editors - Munich

It does my head in that people are lumping Editors in with Joy Division. Tom has a baritone voice and they are a bit dark and moody...but listen to the guitars!! This lot have tunes, real big tunes. Really just go and play some Joy Divison then play Munich...they sound nothing like each other. I love Joy Division and I Love what I have heard of Editors but they are DIFFERENT! and Munich makes me want to dance my ass off! It's a fantastic single.

Re: Editors - Munich

I too can't understand why they have been compared to Joy Division.

But what i heard of this band was really really average and i don't think i will try to listen to them again.

Editors - Munich

Another excellent single from the Editors boys. I prefer this one to Bullets. They just seem to be getting better and better as the recent gig at Oxford proved!

Editors - Munich

More Chameleons than Joy Division.
Saw them last week at Stealth and they were awesome.
Make no mistake, 'Munich' is an early contender for single of the year.

Editors - Munich

i love this single. i too like it better than bullets.

Editors - Munich

Are you people deaf?? Banksy = Smitho = Ian, just like Gryff = Jason Donovan.

Re: Editors - Munich

Saw them there too. Excellent live.very danceble (sp).

I think they're going to have a great year.

Re: Editors - Munich

Definitely echo this - esp. Shady Bard and Pioneers of Industry. See also The Skeksis. Birmingham is going places at the moment, thank god.

Editors - Munich

haha they must be deaf not see the joy division comparison. i think the band would admit theres similarities too!

Editors - Munich

I still have Bullets as my single of the year so far. Nothing has sounded as urgent yet, but Munich is pretty close. Lots of new B-sides across the various formats too..brill!
Looking like a band to get very excited about.

Sometimes reading the comments here are a bit depressing though....
"sound like every other band", "poor mans Joy Division" et cetera et cetera.
If you dinna like them, go create summit you do like then!

Editors - Munich

guess what - that's what a lot of people do!

Editors - Munich

I have just heard of this band after listening to their new track 'munich' and i'm blown away by it. It's about time Interpol had some worthy competion for the C21st post-punk crown and editirs will hopefully provide it. 'people are fragile things you should know by now........ Wicked.

Editors - Munich

Simply awesome- a friend strongly recommened this band to me and they have exceed all my expectations. Lyrically they are sensational and musically they are brilliant. Overall a surperb band worth looking out for, guarenteed to have a great year. Im eagerly awiating the next single!

Editors - Munich

I don't see why an imitator should be 'compared', full stop. Dreadful.

Editors - Munich

I have seen Editors and really liked them. However, whenever I read reviews of Battle, it sounds nearly identical. I'm going to go see them on Monday, but like, what's the difference then?

Re: Editors - Munich

the spelling?

munich
