Upon the eve of the release of another Beastie Boys album, it would seem that their tunes have become as grey as MCA**’s hair.

Ch-Check It Out’ is the sort of tag-team rap based over a simple looped FX and drumbeat that the group have come to hang their hat on all too easily. Any difference between this and their previous single, 2000’s ‘_3 MCs and 1 DJ’ is purely coincidental.

No longer anywhere near the cutting edge territory as classics like ‘Paul’s Boutique’, the New York trio seem content in treading the same lines that they first splendidly ploughed fifteen years ago. It’s not that the quality has diminished, it’s that the competition has improved, and the sight of four forty-something men languishing in the distance is not an edifying one.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Oh for the days of "Paul's Boutique"...

Then again, they did surprise me with the general good-ness of "Hello Nasty".

Then again, "Intergalactic" was an almost infinitely better lead single than this.

Oh well...

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

It's MCA with the grey hair, durr.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

haha, this has to be one of the lamest reviews I've read on this web site. Like the guy above said it's MCA who has grey hair, and the album is not out till the 14th of June, and hence we are nowhere near the 'eve' of the albums release....are we??

...and I'd be imtrested to hear some of the Beastie Boys competitors work?? I really can't think of a band that come close to the Beastie's beats and rhymes....bar maybe the 'female Beasties' that are Northern State, and they hardly eclipse them do they??

....and the single is far more of a progression from the Pauls Boutique work than you give them credit for.

Gareth; with writing of such quality I guess I'll be seeing you in the NME....

feel free to rip apart my overuse of the full stop, and the hideous grammar utilised within this post if it makes you feel better....but at least I am not going to try and call my ramblings a 'review'.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

hahaha.

i actually think this is more of a return to form than hello nasty ever was. intergallactic is the track you skip on an album because it was such an annoying single.

ill communication is my favourite beasties album, i hope the new record will be just as good.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

I wonder why this has disappeared from the news page?

Re: The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

you're on the money there.
intergalactic was bobbins.
i liked the new single right away, it's pretty good but then i thought how incredible check your head and ill communication were and realised that the b-boys are still a long way from their previous heights.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

None of the Beasties has turned forty yet...

Re: The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Intergalactics cover is one of the best ever. That hamster is the biz.

Re: The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

DJ Hammy, innit.
Southampton massiiiiiiiiiiiive in da house.
etc etc etc

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

yes...but full marks for the front cover

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Poor review.

Competitors?

I think it is bad when an artists age is pointed out. very NME

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Well, granted it is a bit of a formulaic hip-hop song, i like, and clearly the whole album won't be like it, one of the great things about the last few beastie albums was the variety of styles. I think it's just a bit of a teaser, not giving too much away about the album's sound. And it's good to hear something a bit old school and vaguely good to compare to the ringtone hip-hop and egotistical whinings of the likes of Usher. The sooner his house falls the better

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

I don't think the Beasties should really be compared with other hip hop because they've always been a band who had their own sound. Nobody's ever really sounded like them and Vice versa. The record's good, but it's nothing new from their point of view. Rather than the laid back noises of 'Paul's Boutique', I was kind of hoping for a bit of Sabotage :-) . I just hope the live shows retain the energy, because they were one of the best live bands!

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Dunno about the relative artistic merits of the song, I just really like the mouse on the front cover.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Disappointing. The review, that is. The song's ace.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

I've hung tough with the B-Boys since the get-go, and I gotta say, they need to make it a bit more abstract. The rhymes are a LOT more cobbled together than they used to be, and the diversity of the grooves has diminished GREATLY since Paul's. They seem to be resting on their laurels lately, and despite having COLOSSAL laurels, this record should have been much deeper, given the fact that they had---- what----- 5 years to work on it? I'll take Cool Keith any day, at this point... he's just so much.... well, ILLER.

On a side note: I used to rely on MIKE D as sort of an obscure-70's-culture historian, and I used to count on him tossin' cool throwback references to stuff I recall as a kid, but yo..... He dropped the ball with a line on this new album... (I'm paraphrasing here), "And jus' like Fred Sanford, 'I'm comin' Weezie!'" He's obviously referring to Fred's cry to his deceased wife, as he suffers an imagined heart-attack, but Mike....any fool knows that Fred Sanford's wife was named ELIZABETH, and it's George JEFFERSON'S wife that's called Weezie. Yo' Mike.... how could you let that slip through the editing process!?!?!?

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

One other observation.... When CYH came out, my bandmates and I used to envy the ease in which the B-Boys seemed to be able to work together.... I mean, it felt like they were just having an assload of FUN, and laid down 20 HOURS of stuff... just buggin'...., then simply stripping away all but the best 50 minutes for the listener to enjoy.

Now, it just seems like they're WORKING at it to hard. Just an opinion.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

I have never liked their squawking spoilt middle class boy hip-hop, but this song is particularly uninspiring, dated tripe.
Mah! Mah! I can't find my car keys! Mah! Where's my dinner?!

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

This song is really really really awful...

Re: The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

No it's not.
Don't be silly.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Sorry, I must agree, this is piss-poor stuff.

Don't understand how people can actually like this....it's just bland as hell. Confuuuused!!!!!!

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

the album is surprisingly great though. :)

Re: The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

Really? In that case, I'll give the album a listen. Liked some of the stuff on "Hello Nasty", but to be honest I'm not a particularly big Beasties fan....in fact, I'm not actually a fan at all lol.

The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out

what?this song is ace!i love it!
