Talk about shooting fish in a barrel. Not content with asking a stupid question within their new live album title (‘Where Have You Been Tonight?’ – um, as far away from you as possible you MONKEY-FACED COCKS), these Brit indie posterboys, circa 1995, are inviting cheap shots a little with their comeback single.

In a desperate attempt to claw back some chart credibility this is only out for a week, which is miles less astounding than realising that ‘Why Can’t I Be You’ is half alright. Cripes.

Rick Witter was always a poor man’s Ian Brown or perhaps even Liam Gallagher, not exactly a prestigious position to occupy, but here he sticks firmly within his limited vocal range and sounds all the better for it.

Opening with a confrontational “do you have an opinion / would it mean something to me?”, the guitars are surprisingly chirpy and the pace is (s)punky. The crap keyboard parps are still rubbish, mind.

Shit, this wasn’t supposed to happen – what are the odds, in 2003, on a Shed 7 comeback?? Let’s hope – nay, pray – this is a false dawn.

Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

This is great little single. Okay, so the marketing screams desperation (1 week only, 2 CDs at 99p each) but to have the Sheds in at 23 in 2003 is some acheivement (nevermind Wildhearts at 22). Reminds me of Disco Down with the funky guitar line. Shame on HMV for not racking it alongside Girls Aloud and forcing me to delve into their catalogue shelves...something tells me though that Shed 7 have a constant fanbase and so long as they ensure they spend low to make low they'll still be here in another 10 years.

Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

Nooooooo!!! tell me it's some horrible dream! What next, they're gonna bring back Cast? Kula Shaker? When will it end? So much fear...

Re: Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

marketing. marketing. blurb. blurb.

doesn't make the band any good tho, does it?

go hang yerself.

Re: Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

christ Andy... you must've been reading too much Music Week or Record Of The Day/Tip Sheet boards if you've started talking like this.

Re: Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

I haven't even heard it and I know I prefer the Cure song of the same name. Britpop was fucking awful, there were so few survivors because of this.

marketing blah blah

I just thought I'd give the "success" of the single some context. Given that it failed to pick up any real media exposure beyond the press you have to ask if all the marketing tricks really served any purpose other than making a loss on every unit shifted.

(yes I used that last phrase to deliberately wind up the puritans)

Re: Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

Or Northern Uproar...

What I want to know is who the hell is still buying this stuff? Every ex-Shed 7 fan I know has moved on either to different music or a medium-security prison.

Anyway, I gather it's not a cover of the Cure song, which might at least have been moderately amusing...

Re: Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

On a totally random note, some complete manc prick who claimed to have one been in northern uproar gatecrashed a part i was at in brighton a few months back. he was trying to tell meanwhile back in communist russia that they should get some girl to do spoken monologues over the top of their songs. he also didn't get the hint when we told him to make sure he dont slam the door on the way out. or something.

A NOTE TO CAPTAIN BULLSHIT

Captain your a tit!!

Re: Shed 7 - Why Can’t I Be You?

The Shed were a top band. Great live, and Witter wrote great catchy tunes, that were FUN to listen to. They would've been around for alot longer if it hadn't been for those that consider music a "fashion".

Bought the NME lately per chance?
