Gold Chains

This is the first Gold Chains release where I've found myself actually liking it because of the lyrics and the MC-ing, as opposed to merely the production. For me Topher LaFata (that's Gold Chains to you and I), used to be just another MC Paul Barman figure, a novelty white MC gaining his respect from formal connections with cool labels and better artists.

The production, by GC himself, with help again from Kit Clayton , is an orchestral-swooping middle-eastern vibed banger and fits right in with hip-hop's current fascination with Asian music. The 'GC Gold Club Mix' is a bit shite to be frank; straight four-to-the-floor beats made all the duller by being sandwiched between the original, and the mighty old school raveiness of the Kid606 mix.

Lyrics encouraging us towards a more socially conscious mindset are not what I expected to hear from Gold Chains. I'm actually looking forward to the LP now, where before I was just looking to see if Kid606 was producing any tracks for him.
