Garage punk is, like, _SO_ last year, right? I mean, only dedicated NME fans actually (pretend to) still like that stuff, right? So, Hot Hot Heat must be waaaaaay behind the times, unoriginal and generally dull as fuck, right?

Well yes, yes but NO! Behind the times and unoriginal; guilty as charged but this band have got something that must be akin to, as my mother might say, having ants in yer pants. Everything about 'Bandages' SCREAAAAAAMS “hello, we were once a punk/ska band but then we realised that grrrage punk/indie was where the money’s at, only it took us a year to get it perfected. Oh I _DO_ hope we’re not too late!”.

With a sound that lies somewhere between the reggae and ska beats of Reel Big Fish and spiky, faux-unrefined guitar-pop of The Coral, I realise I should know better than to encourage this. But the bottom line is, the song’s funky as hell in an addictive caffeine-junkie sorta way and I fucking LOVE it! It stinks of vague, drunken memories from Friday night at a packed out Indie/Rock club, and of dancing around the living room in your pyjamas as it plays on MTV, both in equal proportions. It’s the song that turns the mosh pit into a dance floor and it’s the one that’ll have the muso’s swearing in the first 10 seconds, despite their compulsively tapping toes.

And where The Coral disappointed with an album full of utter drivel after the double-vodka-red-bull promise of ‘Dreaming Of You’, if these B-sides are anything to go by, Hot Hot Heat are gonna be keeping up appearances with the sound track to all your most embarrassing memories for the foreseeable future. Amen to that!

Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

his voice makes me see a bunged up little kid as well as some spaced out smackhead off the streets of mcr both with dreadlocks
crazy talk
great review though

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

How come Disco is alive again? And why is it dressed like The Trail of Dead and coming across more like a Greenday demo than Bee Gee's on acid? I guess with the death of dance music, it's rocks turn to rock the dancefloor?!

This song annoys me. I don't see what the fuss is about, it's just a stream of chorus'. They've got good hooks, but the album seemed missing a few tricks other than this track.

I have no idea where the Coral comparision comes from tho missy!!?

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

Yeah well I'm totally lost looking for you Green Day comparisons?!?! Are you thinking about the same band???

I've not heard the album but I love this single. It's happy, it's funky and just generally a brilliant little pop tune, in the same was as Dreaming Of You is.

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

I've got the album right guys and all of your influences are completely missing any point.

Sean - They do not sound anything like Green Day/Living End. If you continue to misunderstand this we will beat you with a pile of Punk O Rama cds until you realise there were bands before 1994.

KP - Reel Big Fish, um no. The Coral, please. Never in a million years. They are not garage rock either but we can see past that due to the scraggy lofi production.

I love you all really though.

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

I love the single and album and I would probably quite happy have sexual intercourse with them all.

You'd be hard-pushed to find a more original rock single this year.

I think the album is top sausage. Pop hooks aplenty.

I'm sure they own a few Xtc and Elvis Costello albums between them.

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

Am I the only one who thinks the singer sounds like Robert Smith?

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

No, you are one of Many. It's mentioned in 9/10 HHH reviews/articles (which is why I'm kinda proud I didn't mention his name at all in mine).

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

I said bunged up little kid with dreadlocks if that adds anything

Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

shit review. reel big fish, my arse

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

they sound a bit like supergrass if you ask me (apart from the ska bits).

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

Clearly, its Robert Smith on good drugs in a major scale bun fight with Talking Heads. Mixed with other stuff. Y'know.

Come on, Talking Heads. You've heard of them... yeah?

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

Glad I'm not the only one who thought this review was way off the mark. It's not garage and Reel Big Fish/The Coral? Eh? It's powerpop - early XTC/Wire, organ led punk pop basically.

Oh and at least half the labum's fantastic.

Re: Hot Hot Heat - Bandages

the guy's voice really grates on me as well, except in the chorus, but i find the song a bit mindless (AND I'M NOT BEING A MUSO HERE), just does nothing for me.

KP - article is good, even with the massive u-turn in the middle... ;-)

Give me Junior Senior any day though
