The Star Spangles come from New York, they look like The Strokes, have names like The Strokes (Joey Valentine and Tommy Volume) but surprisingly they don’t sound like The Strokes.
‘Which one of the two of us is gonna burn this house down?’ sounds likes bluesy guitar rock with a hint of punk thrown in for flavour…cue harmonious wooooo oooooooo’s and mad drumming. The lyrics are probably off a Supergrass album ‘you turn the oven on, I’ll light a match’ all this added together gives the song a watered down, slightly boring feel.
The second song to this double A-side, is where The Star Spangles, shine. 'Stain Glass Shoes' is barely there before it goes, more post punk, sounding a bit like The Clash singing about taxis, with a Manics Holy Bible era guitar solo…this really should have been the lead song.
With a sound like this and a support slot with Idlewild, I can see this band picking up a few fans along the way...
