The Coral. Love them or hate them, those NME endorsed scouse potheads have already had a bit of an impact this year. Top of The Pops, Top Five album and all. Here we have our first example of a ‘sub‘-Coral band. The Bandits.
Yep, they're from Liverpool. Yep, they make an adventurous mix of pretty much everything ever recorded ever. Yep, the bloke from Cast probably nods his head knowingly at their gigs.
Debut single, "The Warning" is a chaotic rambler of a tune, jaggedly stumbling along like a drunk finding his merry way home. Lead singer, John Robinson, drawls with all the laconic carelessness of Lee Mavers, and the chorus is suitably anthemic, in a dirty scouse lunchtime pub type way.
But this lacks much of the charm, invention, and indeed passion of some of The Coral's best work, and The Bandits will always trail in the wake of their city chums. Which is obviously a bit of a bugger.
