Ah Brighton; Gay UK, London-On-Sea, the South East Riviera (how we laugh at that last one)? whatever it is to you, it's inarguably a provider of great musical alumni. In fact, when they're not rocking the Freebutt, the local indieists all seem to be hanging out with each other, hence this side project containing members of British Sea Power, Tenderfoot and Electric Soft Parade.

It's the sort of record that you make for the hell of it: free from the pressures of writing the breakthrough single, or producing a successful second album. It's probably not too surprising then, that this sounds effortless and fresh. 'I Can't Stand To Stand Beside You' is a droning blast of American-ised lo fi rock and frankly sounds like the best thing to come out of Brighton since the first time BSP released 'Carrion'. Which is a good enough reason to buy it. The second reason is that poor Tom and Alex White of ESP are probably tired of eating beans, so do them a favour too.

Remember: A psyche-indie band isn't just for 2001: They need to be loved for the rest of the decade as well.

Brakes - I Can't Stand To Stand Beside You

Come and see them in Lonon on Friday, Cardiff on Saturday or Brighton on Sunday.

And get there for the excellant Pipettes who are supporting on all 3 shows.

Brakes - I Can't Stand To Stand Beside You

*Pedant alert*

Carrion was only ever released once.

Brakes - I Can't Stand To Stand Beside You

Brakes were great last night (Cardiff), as were the Pipettes, and the Jesus & Marychain duet was fantastic.
