Ariel Pink's 'Worn Copy' isn't something that you should really listen to when feeling fragile. It's a hazy, strange and twisted little journey into retro psychedelia and skewed free-form songwriting - everything about it sounds slightly wrong, as if it's on an old tape that keeps speeding up and slowing down, warped and stoned and unstoppably fucked up. But not in that gorgeous, graceful My Bloody Valentine kind of way, more like the band's batteries are in danger of running down... you can imagine them slowing down in the practice room until eventually the music grinds to a halt and they are frozen like statues.

It's kinda unique. Lo-fi? No-fi. Tape hiss, out of tune jamming, weirdo mumbling, creepy beeping and sleepy dancing. It could be a time warp, back to some 4am acid party with lava lamps and loads of people doing free love on beanbags in a New York loft. I'd imagine a lot of people will hate this self indulgent hippy-shit, but I quite like it - I like the pungent haze of freak-ness that oozes out of the speakers when it's playing. I haven't been able to get through the whole record in one sitting yet though. Maybe I need to detune my head some more first - where's that dial again?

Ariel Pink - Worn Copy

This took a while for me to, like, "get" it, but now I love it.

This is just one guy isn't it? And all the drum sounds are made with his mouth.... nice.

Ariel Pink - Worn Copy

I think Ariel Pink is a single dude, and the Haunted Grafitti are his band. There's a thing about them in the new Plan B.

Ariel Pink - Worn Copy

Ariel Pink definitely has a whole band - I saw them at the Portland Arms at some point this year, and I wasn't drinking enough to've imagined the rest of them. But they were just billed as "Ariel Pink".

I bought a CD, actually. I may have to dig it out and give it another listen. I was disappointed at first listen because it just wasn't bloody loud enough.

Ariel Pink - Worn Copy

He made the whole thing himself on 8 track.

I <3.

Re: Ariel Pink - Worn Copy

The gig at The Portland Arms wasn't Ariel Pink (I'm assuming you are referring to when they were supporting Panda Bear with Signer on Jan 16th), Ariel was refused a work permit so wasn't allowed to play, so his band just did some stuff without him.

Ariel Pink - Worn Copy

Jesus, this is a very strange record. At first listen it is rather hard on the ear. DOn't think i've heard anything quite like it before!
