The only reason The Mad Capsule Markets aren't recognised as one of the best acts in the world today is because they're from Japan. While Kyono (vocals), Takeshi Ueda (bass, programming) and Motokatsu Miyagami (drums) have managed to overcome some of the more obvious obstacles to cracking the Western market (like the language barrier), they have yet to be picked up by a major, thus they don't have a PR monolith backing them up. So it follows, then, that hardly anyone on this side of the planet has heard of them and it's doubtful their new album CiSTM K0nFLiqT will be receiving all that much airplay on mainstream radio.

And that's a real bitch, because this is music that deserves to be heard by the widest audience possible. When you consider the unimaginative bilge that floods the heavy metal racks in music stores every year, the MCM shine out like a beacon in the mist. Even though CiSTM K0nFLiqT is something of a step down from the near-perfection of their last album, 010, it's still capable of wiping the floor with most of your record collection.

Heavy metal is an incredibly limited defintion of the MCM's sound. This band ropes in elements from everything from industrial to punk to drum and bass to video game sound effects and more. 'K0nFLiqT' kicks things off with a computer-style intro before twittering samples barrel into the brutal guitar line of 'Retalk'. Kyono's deep-throated roars snake in and out of the riff before the song ratchets up the speed like a crash-test vehicle screaming full-tilt towards a wall.

'Bomb Idea' and 'Scary' follow, and both of them showcase the MCM's most enviable talent; the ability to graft pop hooks that Robbie Williams would kill for onto a musical bed heavy enough to crack skulls open. Let's be clear: when I use the words "pop hooks" don't be fooled into thinking that we're wandering into Blink-182 territory. This music could compete with Slipknot's earliest work in terms of sheer menace, yet somehow the singalong choruses don't seem out of place.

It's not all good. The unpronuncable (at least by my gaijin tongue) sixth track sounds like Vangelis attempting drum and bass with the Daleks on backing vocals - it's less interesting than it sounds, trust me - and 'Let It Rip' is a soulless death metal stompfest by way of Fischerspooner. But these two pieces of filler only stand out due to the band's usually sky-high pedigree.

For a good idea of what you can usually expect from this band check out the surf-rock-speed-metal frenzy of 'Sunny Beach Rd' and 'Happy Ride' - both songs come armed with sweet "woo-woo" backing vocals and are heavy enough to be used on a demolition site. The only song on here that could be called "pop" in the strict sense of the word is 'She Loves It - Explore The New Day' and that has a chorus capable of shredding eardrums if the volume knob's too high.

Perhaps the best thing about CiSTM K0nFLiqT, as with all of the MCM's catalogue, is how versatile this trio can be while packing a fat wallop. Really after a couple of listens, most metal bands - fuck it, most metal scenes - seem redundant. If music was the only PR required, the MCM would be a global household name. In another reality the band are formed in California in 1991 and are snapped up by Interscope in the wake of the grunge explosion. They quickly accrue a massive fan base on their first world tour, and effectively close the lid on nu-metal before it ever gets started. In this world, Limp Bizkit are forever consigned to second-tier venues and Linkin Park never happened. Doesn't that sound wonderful?

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

fantastic album.

i kinda like the sixth track...

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

sixth track (it's called cracker!!!) is my favourite track off the album, so to hear it as being one of the low points of the album was particularly bizarre. wait till you see it live - it's utterly insane. yeah, let it rip is the only dip in the album - if you strip all the screamed vocals and guitars out it's actually a song originally done by an electronic outfit called joujouka.
but i'm pleased to see mad getting some recognition. they're waaay too good to be limited to a little paragraph in the reviews section of kerrang ever two years.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

i was out in japan a bit ago and mentioned them to someone out there, and she was amazed that they were known anywhere but japan. they are massive there, but no one thinks they are even heard of elsewhere. in the japan bands sections in the hmvs you cant miss their bits, theres so much!
it is a shame no one really knows about them, but english bands arnt known out there unless they are massive or really hard working, so id say they are doing really well in england.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

This sounds good and I think I'll buy it. I don't have the last album, only the one before, can't remember the title, something to do with oscilate ?

Missed them live here last time around due to already having a ticket for another gig on the night, but will do my best to see them next time, as I think they'd be good live.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

oscillator in distortion

i have that album too...its fucking fantastic, will probably buy this one like, sounds good from the review

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

Buy them all. They're all good. OSC-DIS, 010 and this one. I haven't heard Digidogheadlock, but that's because it's flippin' hard to get hold of.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

It's odd. I've been a massive MCM fan for ages now, and I know a LOT of Japanese people, and none of them have heard of them (well, one of them knows 'Pulse', but that's it). They can't be nearly as big as everyone over here likes to make out.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

i live in japan and can essentially describe it like this. people who listen to alternative music all know who they are. your average person on the street won't have a clue. somewhat similar perhaps in that sense to the fame of the deftones over here. that said, amongst those who listen to this kind of music over there, they're total heroes. all the articles on them in japanese magazines focus heavily on the fact that they're japan's ambassador for heavy music now, and all the fans know a lot about the tours they do over in england and love the idea that their favourite band is making waves in other countries. going to one of their gigs in japan is incredible, simply because they're utterly worshipped by their fans. and deservedly so - they're certainly my favourite band, and to limit yourself to listening only to the stuff they've released in england is to cut out way over half their back catalogue, which is one of the most exciting band developments i've ever seen. they've always been a really really interesting band, takeshi ueda's song writing is utterly and completely his own and his own alone. sorry to gush, but they're fantastic and more people need to know.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

Yeah, i've wondered if that's the case before, just that the alternative scene is far more seperated from the mainstream. Those same Japanese people have never heard of my favourite Japanese bands (the MCM, the Ryders, eX-GIRL) or even any Japanese bands I can think of (Polysics, Malice Mizer, etc. etc.) either, so.. yeah. Guess they're the sort of people who listen to Maroon 5 and SMAP though, really.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

Pick up a copy of Karl Taro Greenfield's book, Speed Tribes. There's a chapter in there on the music industry in Japan - commercial vs pop - which makes for very interesting reading.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

Sorry - I meant manufactured vs non-manufactured.

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

Hmm...I'll probably buy this. It seemed to be more of the same from what I've heard, but that's still fucking brilliant.

'OSC-DIS' will never be topped though.

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

I've only heard Scary but I think its a fantastic song. Really weird though.

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

MCM are the low end of the japanese rock scene. For the real deals, check out Dir en Grey, Moi Dix Mois, Kagerou and others. Basically, MCM are like Dir en Grey, only with more sampling and more english lyrics...

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

If this is the low end of the scale, then I want to hear the rest of it, because the MCM are one of the most creative outfits I've ever heard. Please - more links. More recommendations.

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

dir en grey are really, really not very good. at all. and they're nothing like mad capsule markets.

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

i think this band will be fun to see live. hence im going to see them.

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

got the album on saturday.
Love it.
Better than Osc-Dis in my opinion. I need to go and get some more of their albums, cept i'v gotta make room for other stuff like games and other cd's, and I don't work.
Everybody has to get this album, though!
i introduced MCM to 3 or 4 of my friends, and they all loved it. I only had one friend over here that had ever heard of them, and he only heard one song.
I love their futuristic approach, it creates a whole new, exciting feeling. They're original and creative, and blooody great! my 2nd favourite band, after Iron Maiden

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

It's nice to see you've obviously looked into this...

Re: Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

aplogise for not backing up my opinion if that's what you wanted, but i've heard enough of dir en grey's music to form opinions on them...

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT

What a fantastic band. Saw them for the 3rd time at Islington Academy on 6th Dec and once again they blew the place away. The combination of drum n bass samples plus live drumming, techno samples plus live synth, heavy rock riffs plus bass player and his box of effects, a screaming front man who bows between songs and reads his inbetween song comments ("YOU..ARE..WIKKED!") off a scrap of paper. How can you resist? Osc-Dis is the best I've heard, 010 and CK not as amazing, but hardly any song is duff. If any band reflects the music that plays in my head, it is them. They are the Holy Grail. See them whenever you can, buy Osc-Dis NOW.

Mad Capsule Markets - CiSTM K0nFLiqT
