We’ve all vented our anger at some time or other at the MTV-sponsored pseudo-punks such as *Good Charlotte *(indeed, some of us have more reason than others) at the way they proudly hold aloft the punk banner whilst executing some of the most uninspiring, throw-away commercial pop that is as far-removed from punk as George Bush is from reality. But now, _now _with *The Distillers *making waves and *The Bronx *entering the fray it seems we’ve finally got some bands with the passion, guts and lyrical muscle to blow these pretenders away and show the kids what punk rock is really all about.

Originally released on their own White Drugs label in the states and produced by Gilby Clarke *of *Guns ‘n’ Roses *at his LA home studio, The Bronx’s self-titled debut album is a raucous, blood-pumpin’ maelstrom of super-charged riffs, out-of-control shrieks and cool hip-swinging licks with influence rooted in the brash high-energy grooves of old tour-buddies *Rocket From The Crypt.

From the adrenalised shit-kicking riff of opener ‘Heart Attack American’, The Bronx rip the carpet from right under your feet, stirring up a screaming tornado of ass-whippin’ punk rock that - like much of this album - is just unrelentless from start to finish. They’re a band brandishing the flamin’ blues-ridden grooves of The Stooges *and *MC5, pumping them with an explosive modern-day re-interpretation slammed straight up to 11 and burning with a wreckless live-fast-die-young attitude.

Stand out track ‘They Will Kill Us All (Without Mercy)’ is an intense wide-eyed, fist-pumping slab of anthemic white noise that bares references to a previous history of drug taking that underlines the album with a dark defiance, fuelling the energy that courses throughout with words of frustration (“my scars have overrun my skin/leached onto everything inside” - ‘Gun Without Bullets’) and a bold convalescence (‘I Got Chills’, ‘Heart Attack American’). Clearly meeting girls at the Warped Tour isn’t on The Bronx’s agenda just yet.

From start to finish _‘The Bronx’ _is a 30-minute whirlpool of adrenalised rock ‘n’ roll, spiked with cold-sweated angst and a muscular anthemicism that burns with the kind of pure and exhilarating vivacity that the likes of *F-Minus *ooze in abundance. Utterly essential

The Bronx - The Bronx

I want to be in this band.
In fact, I want this band to be in me.
I'd let them - they're that good.
Best record of 2004, thus far, no doubt.
'Heart Attack American' will probably prove to be the best opening track of any album all year.
BUY IT YOU FOOLS.

The Bronx - The Bronx

am i getting confused or just plain wrong, or....

is this the band who signed to a major, who then leased them back to a US indie label ( i forget which one) in order to get them more "scene credibility" or some bullshit like that....

i've heard great things about the bronx, but if what i just said is the case here, then that's gunna take the shine off somewhat.

Re: The Bronx - The Bronx

They did something with Ferret.
Of that I am sure.

Re: The Bronx - The Bronx

Ok, it's a little wierd. They signed to Island, but decided to release it on their own label to prove their indie credentials and that they could tour and promote the release independently, before their major label debut. Of course you can interpret it as you've explained it, but I dunno... they're an amazing band, and major label or no major label, you should buy this album anyway!

Re: The Bronx - The Bronx

fair enough - i've heard so many people rave about these guys recently that i'm gunna have to add em to my ever-growing wants-list....

Re: The Bronx - The Bronx

I'd imagine it was more along the lines of the band having the debut record already written and recorded, and then releasing it themselves, with an extra ooomph from Island who'll support the release (their marketing and plugging teams, maybe video budgets and the like too) inorder to secure a better deal with the band.

I'll see what I can find out if anyone is REALLY interested...

Re: The Bronx - The Bronx

Their own label is White Drugs.
'The Bronx' also came out through Ferret, which, as far as I know, has absolutely nowt to do with Island. They released it back in August.

Island may well have re-released since. I dunno. I can't find any mention of Island anywhere tho.

The Bronx - The Bronx

the words 'punk' and 'distillers' shouldn't even be in the same sentence.

The Bronx - The Bronx

Not to go round and round in circles or anything but White Drugs released the album. Ferret distributed it. Witchita licensed it to the UK. So where do Island come in? They're not mentioned in the album sleeve. They're probably financing the band in some way, but I don't think they're gonna get too involved in distribution or promotion just yet. They probably hooked them up with the Distillers and Lost Prophets tours, that kinda thing.

As for the Distillers, I have my own reserves about whether they have or they haven't sold out. All I know is that I'd much prefer kids to see Brody Dalle on CD:UK instead of Busted.

Re: The Bronx - The Bronx

Who gives a flying fuck what record label they're on?! It's nice to listen to a proper punk instead of all the shitty pop punk shite that keeps getting shoved in our faces just because it appeals to 13 year olds and silly arse girls who have nothing better to do than decide that because a band has a fit lead singer, they will listen to them and scream "I want your babies" at gigs.
So long as the band make real music and stay true to music as an art form (not a business) then the record company doesn't matter... so shut up about labels all the time!

The Bronx - The Bronx

Amen to that
