How do you write a review on a record that inspires nothing? When there is nothing there, do you merely write nothing? It should inspire anger, for I used to love Cave In so. The buzz that surrounded them in their youth is over. They finished it themselves. The sheer, unreasonable catharsis and fleeting doom-inspiring thunders of their first two albums has been replaced now with two more albums of lower tempos, increased structures and melody-infused bustles of woe.
How I used to fear their passion as it seeped from my stereo as a thorny weed might from the undergrowth of an enchanted gloom-filled forest. Now I am inspired only by their insipid colourless wane, floating past like a different smell - different, but not unpleasant. This has been a steady transition, clearly visible through the records in a timeline devoid of treachery. Maybe at their finest during the epic ‘Jupiter’, which mixed their paths absolutely, Cave In have wandered down the path which directed them in the utter opposite of their former channel.
I know, however, that this is where they are destined to stay. This is their maturity. Or is it their mediocrity? Either way, I could see it coming and they have slipped into their place with the ease of men that want to be where they are, and are where they want to be.
Am I meant to grow with them? I cannot. It is not my natural course, alas, and so I will stay here. There are other contenders for the throne that they vacated so leisurely. I fear, though, that they too lie in the past. In my wrath-fuelled life of purgatory I am still happy. Maybe less so with the new Cave In.
Cave In - Antenna
I felt like that the first time I heard it, but it's grown on me a lot.
Sure though, it's not in the same league as half of Jupiter and it has it's faults.
It's the mid-paced songs like Rubber and Glue, Stained Silver, Anchor, Joy Opposites that don't sit well I find. Perhaps because half of them have been around a while and haven't aged as well as classics like Innuendo. It's far too dense for compact songs, and I don't like the vocals as much either.
The riff on Inspire is fun though.
There's some nice guitar work in there, especially towards the end. Lost In The Air is still good and Seafrost is fantastic. I'm also liking Youth Overrided and Beautiful Son (NME are wrong, though it does sport some cheesy lyrics)

Maybe some people will investigate the back catalogue. Only a good thing there. But I think they'll find themselves too scared at what they might find. Not used to loud music most likely. Much like yourself I imagine.

i thought you loved Jupiter??? Jupiter and Antenna are NOT really that different at all.
You didn't even review the album, you talked about how much they had changed... i think you will find that this album will inspire alot of people it's pretty original and (as far as i'm aware of ) there isn't even a genre for their music, music that doesn't inspire is shit "punk" like bowling for soup... cave in however manage to produce imagery when you listen to them, they have created something amazing and beautiful and it's a shame that you cannot see this.
