Helen Love wannabes produce yawnsome debut

Two-thirds Canadian and one-third American, The Lollies formed in 1999 to apparently pay homage to all-girl groups such as Kenickie. And a crap version of Sleater Kinney is the result. Taste leaves you with the realisation that there's only so many times one can recreate that sugary half-speaking, half-singing yankee drawl before it all starts getting a bit boring.

Amidst a blur of fuzzbox and sickly synth-pop 'Way Too Special' promises to feature guitarist St. Claire's 'most blistering solo yet!' Frankly there's more exciting fretwork to be heard from a fingerless baboon wearing oven gloves.

Lollies. A treat every so often but bad in excess. And you stopped liking them when you reached the age of nine.

The Lollies - Taste

Frankly there's more exciting fretwork to be heard from a fingerless baboon wearing oven gloves.

Frankly, I've read more perceptive music journalism coming from a fingerless baboon typing with oven gloves.

But what did you expect from a person who actually ADMITS to like the Chili Peppers in public?

Comparisons to Kenickie and Sleater-Kinney? On what grounds? Because they are the only female vocalists you can actually THINK of?

Try a little harder with this predictable, lazy, trend-humping approach to "criticism" (and I use the term loosely) and soon you, too, Ellen, will be qualified to write for the NME!

The Lollies - Taste

Have you actually listened to album Ellen, or are you too busy being all 'emocore' on us?

The Lollies have all the emotion you'll ever need. If only you'd listen, eh?

Re: The Lollies - Taste

> Have you actually listened to album

ah, that good ol' argument. tsk.

Re: The Lollies - Taste

Well, it does often help. I mean it's got lovely packaging and everything, and I know how it's sometimes hard to get distracted, but I wouldn't have minded finding out something more about who does and who doesn't sound like Sleater Kinney this week, y'know...

Re: The Lollies - Taste

Oh, and the fact that it's damn good. The songs are brilliant, the lyrics are powerful, witty and true-to-life and the music is fantastic. Call The Girls is a classic - poingant and catchy to boot! So Ellen - try it again. Hell ,maybe even go see them live. They are a fab band and you, I'm afraid, were so way off the mark!

Never mind listening to the album, checking some facts might be a good idea.

As in, yeah. ALL GIRL band, Kenickie. Johnny X was such a girl. And yeah, Kenickie were the quintessential *60s* girlgroup, weren't they?

The Lollies - Taste

I couldn't possibly disagree with the assessment made in this review MORE. Sleater-Kinney? Is there another band with female members in the entire WORLD? Oh, no, there's really only them apparently, and all other bands with female members MUST be compared to them.

The Lollies actually have their own sound. And the sound is rockin'.

Re: The Lollies - Taste

But by the logic of music criticism, well, Lollies are GURLS and play GUITARS. S-K are GURLS and play GUITARS. Therefore, they are ONE AND THE SAME!!!

It's so true! And by this logic, Travis = KORN!!! I love logic!

Re: The Lollies - Taste

I hate Sleater-Kinney. But I kinda like The Lollies, y'know...does this mean I don't know what I'm talking about? I don't understand...

(lolly) sticking up for myself

Yes I have listened to the album, and one thing you have to understand is that a review is just ONE PERSON'S POINT OF VIEW. the album isn't my cup of tea, but i'm fully aware other people might like it.

A review needs to try and communicate to what the music sounds like to someone who's never heard it before, hence why i mentioned Sleater Kinney - I found the Lollies had a similar singing style.

But whatever I don't need to justify my own opinion any more.

Re: (lolly) sticking up for myself

dude. i like sleater-kinney and all, but the one who sings - well, she sounds like a sheep.
and neither of the lollies' singers siound like sheep. oh, and the album rules... did you actually listen to the whole thing?

Re: (lolly) sticking up for myself

But whatever I don't need to justify my own opinion any more.
You do need to justify your own opinion if you are sharing it in public as a journalist. Yes you do. That's the name of the game, sweetheart. If you cannot justify or defend your opinion, you have no business being a journalist.

The only thing I hear in common in the vocals with S-K is that the singers are female. That's it.

Re: The Lollies - Taste

hey i'm just quoting from their press release....

Re: The Lollies - Taste

miaow.

what if i told you it was the reviews editor at the NME who actually gave me the cd to review?

Re: The Lollies - Taste

hey i'm just quoting from their press release....

No you're not. I got that same press release from their PR, which is how I *know* that you didn't even check that far.

Re: The Lollies - Taste

I'd say congrationlations, the Peter Principle is in effect. You've finally sunk to your level of incompetency.

My opinion of the NME is perhaps, if it is possible, even lower than my opinion of your writing skills.
