Helen Love wannabes produce yawnsome debut
Two-thirds Canadian and one-third American, The Lollies formed in 1999 to apparently pay homage to all-girl groups such as Kenickie. And a crap version of Sleater Kinney is the result. Taste leaves you with the realisation that there's only so many times one can recreate that sugary half-speaking, half-singing yankee drawl before it all starts getting a bit boring.
Amidst a blur of fuzzbox and sickly synth-pop 'Way Too Special' promises to feature guitarist St. Claire's 'most blistering solo yet!' Frankly there's more exciting fretwork to be heard from a fingerless baboon wearing oven gloves.
Lollies. A treat every so often but bad in excess. And you stopped liking them when you reached the age of nine.

The Lollies - Taste
Frankly, I've read more perceptive music journalism coming from a fingerless baboon typing with oven gloves.
But what did you expect from a person who actually ADMITS to like the Chili Peppers in public?
Comparisons to Kenickie and Sleater-Kinney? On what grounds? Because they are the only female vocalists you can actually THINK of?
Try a little harder with this predictable, lazy, trend-humping approach to "criticism" (and I use the term loosely) and soon you, too, Ellen, will be qualified to write for the NME!
The Lollies - Taste
The Lollies have all the emotion you'll ever need. If only you'd listen, eh?
Re: The Lollies - Taste
ah, that good ol' argument. tsk.

Never mind listening to the album, checking some facts might be a good idea.
As in, yeah. ALL GIRL band, Kenickie. Johnny X was such a girl. And yeah, Kenickie were the quintessential *60s* girlgroup, weren't they?
The Lollies - Taste
The Lollies actually have their own sound. And the sound is rockin'.
Re: The Lollies - Taste
It's so true! And by this logic, Travis = KORN!!! I love logic!

(lolly) sticking up for myself
A review needs to try and communicate to what the music sounds like to someone who's never heard it before, hence why i mentioned Sleater Kinney - I found the Lollies had a similar singing style.
But whatever I don't need to justify my own opinion any more.
Re: (lolly) sticking up for myself
and neither of the lollies' singers siound like sheep. oh, and the album rules... did you actually listen to the whole thing?
Re: (lolly) sticking up for myself
You do need to justify your own opinion if you are sharing it in public as a journalist. Yes you do. That's the name of the game, sweetheart. If you cannot justify or defend your opinion, you have no business being a journalist.
The only thing I hear in common in the vocals with S-K is that the singers are female. That's it.

Re: The Lollies - Taste
what if i told you it was the reviews editor at the NME who actually gave me the cd to review?
Re: The Lollies - Taste
No you're not. I got that same press release from their PR, which is how I *know* that you didn't even check that far.
Re: The Lollies - Taste
My opinion of the NME is perhaps, if it is possible, even lower than my opinion of your writing skills.
