After the morose, bitter melancholy of Frogstomp, and Freak Show's relative maturity, in a glum, despondent form and then the grandiose, orchestral Neon Ballroom, Silverchair bring us Diorama. And they’re happy this time. “What the hell?! But it’s Silverchair!”, you may well think but the fact of the matter is, as with all artists, they grew up. You may not like it much or even think there is any point in them carrying on, but the hugely talented Daniel Johns has dealt with his many, many issues and has found new topics for discussion.
With new titles such as ‘The Greatest View’ and ‘Luv Your Life’ it is difficult not to see how unfathomably happy the former depressive, anorexic, lovelorn teenager is. The songs only just manage to sound typically Silverchair. We see brass sections and then the entire orchestra in the aforementioned songs but the minor key balladeering that was so oft seen in previous offerings is notable by its absence. I would regard Silverchair to be one of the best at performing those anthemic sing-alongs but they are sadly not present. Did I mention that it reminded me of Coldplay? It does. Coldplay with a bit of passion…
Re: Silverchair - Diorama
It could be argued that he felt more strongly about his 'pain' than he does about his 'happiness' but yknow. I noted the time changes and the structural quality but it just doesn't work as a record. I guess I just don't like it. Maybe now with his rheumatic fever he'll have something to complain about next time.
Ignore the rating I gave because that is purely my opinion and shouldn't really matter to anybody else. Some of Neon Ballroom worked really well but it wasn't really built upon. It's impossible to just ignore previous efforts because everything's relative and to try to think about the one album would be very difficult.
There's nothing wrong with progression it just doesn't make everyone happy. It's like aiming for a whole new set of fans really. Silverchair are playing music like GooGooDolls/Coldplay now which isn't really for the grungelite market they aimed at previously.
hooray!
i have The Best of Silverchair and Neon Balroom, both absolutely incredible. the striking thing about listening to a Best of cd is that silverchair have developed and changed over the years and you can see a very clear progression but they've maintained such a high standard that i can't say i prefer one to another because they're different but equally good, most bands either get better or get worse but silverchair just keep on evolving....
awesome
Diorama was my fav all time album up until I recieved Young Modern on import. Wait and see Silverchair will conquer the earth.
