On first hearing Furious Sons, one could be forgiven for easily mistaking Favours For Sailors for the latest ensemble of US college rock post-graduates that their Weezer-influenced guitar pop implies. That you'd be wrong is perhaps more to their credit, as it would no doubt have been much easier for this South London four-piece to have followed the rest of their capital-based peers along the Libertine-flavoured Easy Street into pub rock hell.

It's been quite an eventful ride so far. Heavily tipped for the past couple of years, initially making an impact as a three-piece before re-assessing and honing their sound somewhat, Furious Sons is actually their debut release of any kind. This can be viewed in two ways; the fact that no one else has taken the risk of releasing anything by the quartet could be an indication of the record industry's sign of the times; or on the other hand, a healthy dose of kudos to Tough Love Records and their head honcho Stephen Pietrzykowski for realising the undoubted potential FFS possess.

Although only six songs long and clocking in at little over twenty minutes in total, Furious Sons highlights several angles of FFS' make-up. Whether it be the noisily scripted rantings of opener 'Erode My Empire' (which recalls Dananananaykroyd in a more playful mood) or the Franz Ferdinand-go-emo thrills of 'Shy Times', there's something here for those with a penchant for the less serious, nee po-faced side of alternative, underground guitar-based pop. The EP's stand-out moment, 'I Dreamt That I Dreamt That You Loved Me In Your Dreams', is possibly the most fluently vitriolic song Rivers Cuomo never wrote, all doo-wop harmonies alongside an infectious melody that masks a false sense of security revealed in its "Nothing's as it seems, get the fuck out of my dreams" chorus.

Of course there is always a down side to everything, and the rumbling doubt here is whether or not FFS are nothing but one-trick ponies too busy trying to emulate their stateside boyhood heroes. Nevertheless, time will tell whether they have the ability to take that next step forward in the future, but for now Furious Sons is a worthy introduction to the happy-go-lucky world of Favours For Sailors.

7/10

Sick fuck.

This is as near to perfect as music can get.

I LOVE FAVOURS FOR SAILORS

there, I said it.

Great band

"I Dreamt.." is the best pop song I've heard in a long time.

Only 7!

Incorrect.

i'm not really sure how to take this review

it's a bit disappointing really, especially the last paragraph.

7 is a stingy score, and given for the wrong reasons. it's better than that, and better than most british music released for ages.

i hope when my band's album comes out later in the year it actually gets a fair airing rather than some half arsed inaccurate comparisons and a sat-atop-the-fence mark out of ten.

you clearly like this record, it's a shame you haven't allowed yourself to admit how much!

[just my opinion...!]

This is a fantastic EP...

...one of the best British releases for absolutely ages.

7's not stingy, nor sitting atop any fences. It's positive -

and very much in keeping with the thrust of the review, which is concerned with everything FFS have going for them should they fulfill their potential.

Dan

I think 7/10 is pretty much spot on for this. There's no point going overboard in the same way people did with (for example) Johnny Foreigner did last year - a band who FFS share many similarities with - when this EP is just a first step.
What 'Furious Sons' does highlight is a band oozing with potential, but let's not get too carried away just yet.

FFS!

So, like, if they end up being huge, this EP will get a better score?

ps.

If a label fucks them over, is this part of them fulfilling their potential? Or an unseen spanner in the works?

this is...

...the perfect summer album for this year! I can't see anything else coming out that'll beat it.

Uber fun to listen to and interesting guitar and bass work too!

Simply brilliant!

9/10 (at least)

Talking of another brilliant band - I WANT THE NEW WILLIAM CD TOO!

Oh yes people its all about the capitals today! I'm so happy there's loads of Favours for Sailors love. They really are awesome!!

Really?

So it's up there with 'The Blue Album', 'Crooked Rain' and 'Doolittle' is it?

Come on... 9/10s are reserved for the very best of the best in each field. No offence to this album, which I haven't heard yet, but unless it's a real masterpiece it's not a 9 or 10/10. Some of my favourite albums ever have been 7/10s and their imperfections are part of the reason I like them. Why does everyone get so peeved when their mates' album gets a good mark these days?

i knew i shouldn't have commented on this

opinions are opinions and all. and i'm not getting peeved because they are my mates, that is completely irrelevant. i just think it deserved a bit more of a fair assessment on its own merits rather than being viewed as some kind of middle point between re-hashing the past and being an indicator of potential greatness. i don't think it is either of these things. i just think its a really good EP. maybe 7/10 is a fair enough score when compared to the great records. but then compared to most other stuff recently, and especially most things british recently it is definitely a 9. as a nation we produce and consume so much shit music, i think the good stuff deserves a bit more credit and support. though don't get me wrong, 7/10 is a good score, and this is clearly a positive review in many ways. and dom, you make a good point about going overboard. sometimes hype can be a bad thing. but again that is something outside the actual music itself.

anyway, whatever. well done for doing some good songs favours for sailors. now go away and take that next step forward by recording a full length album that fulfils your potential!

Yep

That song's the standout for me. The rest I can sort of take or leave, or at least they're much less instant. 7/10 seems fair.

FFS

Best band acronym of all time?

Not at all

If they progress from this and release an amazing debut album though, then who knows...

Just to say...

Thanks for the review, Dom. It's nice that people are talking about this record. One thing i would add is that it comes as a 12" and CD set on gatefold. I reckon that bumps it up to 11/10, but Dom didn't know that :)

You can order it from us here: www.toughloverecords.com/product.htm and get a free download of the record while you wait for it to arrive (and we still haven't got our copies yet - GZ Media in Czech Republic are taking their sweet time about it - here next week though)

"South London four-piece"

what the fuck is that about?

That there's

four of them and they hang around South London?

only joking

I don't think they're from or hang out in South London...

How do I get the MP3s for this?

I just bought it and can't work it out.

If you haven't worked it out yet...

A code's sent to your email (but I don't think it comes until a few hours after you order) and you just click on selecter on the tough love website and put the code in.

Oh and thanks to Stephen from Tough Love for clearing that up. I was just about to send an email to find out if there was a delay.

That's the one

Has this worked ok for everyone? If you type warmhandscoldheart into the Selecter you'll also get the Favours xmas song (a bit unseasonal now, but still a sweet song!).

Yeah erm,

I've never known them to be from south of the river (unless Nottingham is in peckham...) or even hang out there (more hackney than any where else?)

Regardless - they are amaze.

Hackney is nearer the Thames

than Nottingham innit...

lets change a William track to denote our new Southside status

"South of the river..."

We are totally Northsided - but fundermentaly FFS is a band from Nottingham and Stoke via Norwich + a side order of Malta/Brighton/Herts. You'll never pin us down we are like that Nomadic afro-beat band but we've got a Feista instead of Camels!

Thanks for all the encouraging words y'all!! More pontential fulfiling to come..

DiS

The new haven for Geography teachers?

Haha

We're expecting lots of Geography teachers to buy the mini-album for the art work..

If anyone knows the lyrics in "I Dreamt"

Where it says

"I told the [something] Irishman the value of the shipment"

let me know, because I have no idea...

...

it's "criminal"

Ah! Thanks.

That's been bugging me for weeks now.
