Wakefield trio The Cribs have always been masters of infectious indie-rock; that it took the public three albums to be fully alerted to their charms is merely indicative of the laziness rife within radio-heads everywhere.
‘Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant’ is classic Cribs: sing-along accessibility with biting lyrical critique. Its title alone is representative, quite perfectly, of the angle The Cribs take on their hook-laden offerings: they’re playing catch-up and totally aren’t afraid to take the odd oblique pop at peers who’ve excelled where, perhaps, they should have had a prolonged period in the sun. What’d he say there? “Hard to beat?” Hmm…
Individual interpretation aside – to be fair there’s a degree of ambiguity at work – ‘Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant’ is a corking tune however closely you analyse its underlying messages. Coupled with album effort ‘Our Bovine Public’, this is a tasty little single and no mistake.
