It hasn't been plain sailing these last couple of months for Interpol. While British peers Editors took bold strides towards enormodome status with the nakedly aspirational An End Has A Start, the NYC gloom merchants' own third long player, Our Love To Admire, has faltered commercially, never quite having recovered from being pipped to the number one spot by Brummie panderers The Enemy.
Even their critical bubble looked in danger of bursting, with several reviewers noting a complacent streak in the record’s conscious grandeur that threatened to obscure the moody vulnerability of yore. Personally, I enjoyed it – even if it felt half-baked in parts, it had its moments, and was bookended by some of their most ambitious music to date. 'Mammoth', unfortunately, isn't one of those moments, and makes an odd choice of second single. 'No I In Threesome' would have assumed that mantle with greater ease – perhaps it was deemed too racy – as would 'Pioneer To The Falls', if the folk at Parlophone had been feeling a bit fruity.
Instead, this is Interpol by numbers, Paul Banks' admittedly quite-sexy exhortation to "spare me the fucking suspense" backed by those familiar, portentous peels of guitar from Daniel Kessler. If the wisdom behind its extended, one-chord verses is to convey the tension depicted in the lyrics, it works, but then again, not a right lot happens, all of which leads to the inevitable conclusion that 'Mammoth' should never have been torn from the bosom of its parent album in the first place.

Couldn't agree more
It's not even Interpol by numbers, it literally does nothing. Like I said on the boards though, I saw an interview stating they felt a bit rushed with OLTA, so for the first time are writing whilst touring and have 3-4 already. Hopefully will lead to a stronger follow-up.
good review
this song is all sorts of nothingness.
It's good
but can't compete against their other singles. I'd have went for All Fired Up or Pioneer to the Falls.
Or
Rest My Chemistry.
Or
even Who Do You Think? - catchy, short and sharp.
damn, there were a load of good songs on that album.
ja
Album is great! I like Mammoth too I must say... but yes, I think there are other songs that would have been better singles - I would have gone for Pace is the Trick.
mmm
i think the review is pretty correct, maybe worth a seven but you would think that there were better contenders for second singles on the album, who do you think, rest my chemistry and pace is the trick being the obvious choices. no i in threesome is the second american single so they ll probably release it here next a la muse with knights of cydonia
wrong
Its a subtle change up. I like it.
really?
i think this track sounds so un-interpol-ic. it's the most rock-out with your c**k out--from the smooth, breezy chorus to the fuzzy guitar moves, which is a nice change from the icy Morse code work that kessler brings, which is nice, but change is nice once and a while...
This is the best song
on 'Our Love to Admire' by some considerable margin, you bunch of nutters. It's not so much 'by numbers' as gloriously distilled - less meandering, wonderful use of space and a crescendo worthy of its title.
i'm not sure the lukewarm reviews are justified
there are some seriously good moments on this album but unfortuntely mammoth isnt one of them. any of the other stadout tracks like pace is the trick or rest my chemistry would have made more sense.
as a single
i begrudgingly concede this may not have been the best choice, but nestling in the midst of the album, mammoth is indeed mammoth. you can't quite get the anger when you hear it in isolation i don't think but it is far from interpol by numbers...
it's definitely interpol by numbers
but still good. all the aforementioned possiblities (all fired up, my chemistry, etc.) are TERRIBLE.
Disagreement
I like this song. It's drone is very agressive and sees Paul using his voice better than previous songs.
And where does the lyric "spare me the fucking suspense" ever appear?
dood
'spare me the suspense' is the best part of it. have you not heard the song? it's how it OPENS. spaaaare meee.... the suspense...
I like the bit that sounds like
"dance won't you fucking dance" - but I think is a totally misheard lyric.
the lyric is
'now that's enough with this fucking incense'
Obviously it must be quite smelly to piss him off that much.
agreed
but he never sings the line 'spare me the fucking suspense', does he. which makes you wonder how often the reviewer listened to this before submitting his review.
Should've released
Pace Is The Trick. This is a bizarre choice.
mammoth
is defintly not a bizarre choice of single. Its one of the most uptempo on the album, and probably most radio friendly (despite the 'fuckings')
Dont really think there are many other tunes on there that could work as a single. Pace is the Trick probably would work.
But i do think the general consencious is that this album isn't up to scratch really. I've given it time, but have found myself listening to ..Bright Lights more recently.
Pioneer to the falls
or Rest My Chemistry, still a pretty good song though. Also the advert they have on DiS is really fucking annoying.
mmm
it's one of my more favourable tracks off the album, but the album isn't that amazing either.
spare me this fucking nonsense
Since when was commercial success a measure of quality, DiS? Editors offer their arse to the media, Interpol don't. Good for them. Cracking song from a cracking album.
agreed
that advert is balls
Punk
as fuck reply!
mammoth..
"should never have been torn from the bosom of its parent album" is very true....still a good song though no?
i agree with most of the above
..strange choice for a single but then interpol make it difficult for themselves by making great albums full of potential releases. its their own stupid, talented fault
