Word on the street is that when record executives approached The Maccabees with budget plans for the ‘About Your Dress,’ music video (click), the band was appalled by the excessive offer. Coming from a group whose name originates from biblical rebels, it was no surprise that they took this opportunity to ‘stick it’ to the man.
Contrary to the norm, the music video surfaces as a D.I.Y. parade portrayed almost entirely by costumed finger-tips prancing around as pairs of human legs interacting with each other and dancing to the music. As silly as this scene may appear, it could not be more appropriate: frontman Orlando stutters, “You stood out like a sore thumb” to signature Maccabee murmurings. The childlike awkwardness of the finger puppetry and musical sense of stammering urgency, ‘About Your Dress’ flaps about like the wings of a young hummingbird struggling to stay in flight.
What’s worrying, though, is that the video comes across as significantly more charming than the actual song, which is borderline OK Go. Allow me to explain: remember that incredible OK Go video for ‘Here It Goes Again’, featuring the band’s breathtaking dance skills on treadmills? Absolutely! Remember the words to ‘Here It Goes Again’? Absolutely not.
I'm concerned...
...that The Maccabees are going to be Battle, and impress me and make me excited for a single or so and they go all arse. Tut.
um,
x-ray, latchmere, precious time, first love, about your dress.
FIVE BRILLIANT SINGLES.
i cannot wait for the album.
And each less interesting than the last
It seems that with each single release, they're sacrificing a little more creativity in an effort to gain more public attention. About Your Dress is pretty dull.
I
agree Zapsta
Watch out, here comes...
the backlash.
In my opinion The Maccabees are the most promising young British band to breakthrough in quite a while. Along with Dartz! and GoodBooks things looks very promising for the indie scene right now.
Undiminishing returns
The latest single's maybe the least strong, but First Love's probably their best song.
They've got plenty in the tank, I'm pretty confident.
I've got the album sampler
and it's more than impressive.
Be optimistic for this band, they've got a lot of potential.
what about
Lego? Fucking amazing song! OAP isn't bad either and Latchmere and First Love are shit hot too. bums to the doubters, The Maccabees will come good with a sick album.
i think that
the lyric about the sore thumb is very lovely
the video made me chuckle
I have the album sampler too
and OAP is the best song on it, not a single.
I think that this...
is a really, really poor single. It's just boring. Nothing exciting about it whatsoever. I've got a CD of demos and pretty much every song is more interesting than this one - I really hope this isn't the directiont they are taking with the album...
they are
amazing. end of.
Anyone seeing them on Tuesday
at the Koko NME thing?
to be fair
all their videos are awesome :) and DIY. ish.
unfortunately
this version of the song pales in comparison to the original demo. As appears to be the norm.
First Love's
original demo was better- and the whole thing about the music video is that there are two, they made with fans in ( i'm in it) but i dont think the final edit was how they hoped and so orlando made the finger one.
I
haven't seen the video for this & I still like it!
