Cold War Kids: Hang Me Up To Dry

Cold War Kids are a good band, no doubt. Any band that does a fairly accurate take on White Album-era Lennon and the bass-led twang of any number of great American bands from the last thirty years or so can't be bad.

But they're not a great band. So far they've done little to suggest that they can grab listeners by the neck and infuse them with the ineffable sense that nothing could matter more than the words that Nathan Willett is singing. You can picture them in a dingy LA bar, illuminated only by flickering neon Miller Lite signs.

On 'Hang Me Out To Dry' Matt Maust's bass sounds like it could pull roots from the ground. It forms a formidable spine that Nathan Willett wraps himself around as he throws himself to the mercy of, what one assumes, is a particularly horrible ex-girlfriend. As he sings about being wrung out "too many times" his anguish is audible. You have to hope his foot wasn't trapped in a mangle.

It’s not easy to do heart-felt rock music without sounding preposterous but Cold War Kids do just about pull it off. Give them time and they might be great.

Absolutely

love this!
The opening bassline has that same feeling as the first few twang's of 'Debaser' or 'Slow Hands'. Classic!

indeed this is a super choon

love the wierdy piano stuff...but think you're right about them being a good but not great band.....this is by far the best i've heard from them so far...and other tracks have veered dangerously close to maroon 5 territory!

Wellgoodsong.

fucking love it

they fulfilled my expectations of what the walkmen's first album should have been.

This is definitely

a good song

Love this record to bits

good review but should be an 8 out 10 at least...

do you think?

I liked We Used To Holiday a lot, but this one didn't quite do it for me. the bassline, though, is fantastic.

they will be great

in fact i think they already are. They have such a huge sound. I can imagine them becoming massive, given the right exposure

This review is spot on.

(Apart from the bit where he spells 'sings' wrong).

I prefer this to We Used To Vacation

but when I listen I still get a voice in my head going "I could be listening to Wolf Parade right now"

Great song

and there's only 2 chords.. Reminds me a bit of the Walkmen. I'm hooked!

Huh?

This tune sounds nothing like 'White Album era Lennon'. Surely Cold War Kids smell most of a Jack White creation? The eccentric vocals aren't really a John Lennon thing.

It reminds

me of Yer Blues.

ya...

i don't see the lennon connection either....fuzzzy
