A few years back now, I let go and indulged in something of a holiday romance. It was short, intense and passionate, but the abrupt end left me unfulfilled and despondent.

You see, the problem was that my romance was with Muse and their debut LP, Showbiz. Whilst at the time it felt like the most incredible thing I could get my head around, the proceeding output left me cold, alienated and detached from my former belle. But like every other brief encounter, the hangover from passion never quite wanes and a simple text message or e-mail is enough for another rush of blood to the heart. Muse's re-entry to my conscience is this, 'Supermassive Black Hole'.

Sounding how black and white films in the 60s portrayed the future, mixed with the cream of Prince's output through his most magnificent eras, '...Black Hole' is danceable, stellar, soulful rock music for the masses. This is sassy, classy pop that oozes an air that has seldom seeped from the core of this band.

The love affair is back on and a whole lot sexier than before. A female friend told me that 'Supermassive' makes her want to touch boys. You can't say fairer than that.

  • Muse 9 / 10
  • Brilliant song

Real grower. The general reaction when it first appeared online a month or so back seemed to be underwhelmed, but by god does it grow on you.

I love this track now. Superb.

    • You heard the album yet, Col?

This pales in comparison to the rest of the album.

      • Hope you give the next album a 10.

        It certainly deserves it.

        • God it feels great...

...to have Muse back. It's been a while.

      • I invented

a new genre catagory on iTunes for this track. It's under 'sexy'.

        • I LOVE this song!

          Mmmm welcome back Muse :oD

        • yes, i certainly have

i think it's one of the three best tracks.

        • shame

Jasper Goodhall has let them use some of his artwork on the cover. He should be ashamed! Bloody Muse

          • Yuck.

They seem to make me feel a bit ill when I see that video.

            Not keen at all.

          • It is good but...

the problem with the single is it is not as good as the 'mash up' with that Britney Spears song 'Do Something' http://indierepublican.typepad.com/musicisnotdead/2006/05/new_muse.html

            • Next Single

Should be Map of the problematique. A brilliant antithesis to Supermassive. Dark, epic yet dancable. In other words just a miles better song than this..or different..depending how you look at it.

              • wurst artwerk eva

                trew storie

                • shit song!

what? Is it just me or is this song absolutely SHOCKING?! For god's sake muse sort your lives out.

          • Expansion

They are a great band who definitely needed to move on because the overblown operatics had become a cul-de-sac, and I think this single shows they've done it. Massive respect is due. Hope the album shows a similar expansion into newer territory. Very Prince-y...a baton is passed from one petit gemini to another.

          • What's odd about this song...

...is that everyone seems to love it except for Muse fans.

            I'm a Muse fan. I love it.

            • I'm a Muse fan

I love it too. I'm making myself wait for the album. Only 2 weeks to go. :)

All the promo for it is just teasing me though...

              • has anyone

found that they have grown out of muse through the years?

                • yes

but only in that I'm not as obsessed as i was when I was 12

              • i'm one too

                a mahoooosive one in fact

                and it's a real grower

i was all excited about it at teh start, thinking it was coool and goood etc. then i decided it was like pretty good, maybe the album will make it better. now i've just really got into it, i really REALLY like it!

                :D

and as for the album.. the first 11/10 on DiS ?

                • Is it me...

...or do several tracks on the new album sound EXACTLY like other Muse tracks (specifically "A Soldiers Poem")? Thats a little annoying, and the niggling doubt about whats otherwise an awesome album. Starlight will be the next single I'm almost possitive.

                • is it just me...

                  • ...

I REALLY dont like this. It's limp and unadventurous. I always thought muse were very good musicians but lacking soul and this isnt even that well written musically.
                    Just a bit crap.
oh yeah and the drums are dog.

                    • yes ed....

as I said last night, sounds like electricity era suede...but not as good, and that's bad!

                  • Scissors Sisters much?

... that is if it is the song I think it is. So what do you do if your sound becames a bit same old (yet still brilliant in itself)? Do what every other f***tard is doing and go back to the 80s.

                    • and it sounds

                      FUCKING GREAT.

                      • welcome back

I'm a big Muse fan and love it. Can't wait for the new album if this release is anything to judge it by.

                        • Surely not

Album's really not THAT good. 8/10 record, very good but they've done better. Is a step back in terms of production, and some of it is Muse-by-numbers, but when they hit their stride (ie this single, Map of the Problematique and Knights of Cydonia) it's untouchable.

                        • I agree

It sounds a definite side-step rather than the bold step on the single suggested, but I still like it.

Starlight is the next single, yes, though the band want to release Knights Of Cydonia, apparently.

                          • new album

is brilliant and i cant wait to get it in full quality

                          • Knights Of Cydonia

is going out in place of Supermassive Black Hole in the states apparently. Madness.

                        • strange

nearly all the people praising this song seem to have about 20-50 posts. still at least this is gettin people using the boards.

7/10 song, 8/10 tops. vocals are a big improvement

                        • Jasper Goodhall

                          Have to agree, rather disapointing.
What's he actually been up to lately? Haven't seen new artwork in ages...
