The Rifles: Repeated Offender

What the world probably never asked for at this moment in time was yet another Mod revival.

Not that you’d see The Rifles swanning about in fishtail parkas and desert boots whilst parking their overloaded-with-bloody-mirrors Vespa outside the local boozer of course. Instead they’re too busy crafting catchy, intelligent pop songs that may sound like they could have been recorded any time between 1966 and 1980 but are all the more timeless for it.

‘Repeated Offender’ isn’t as immediate as their previous releases but still stands head and shoulders above most of the other power-pop beat pretenders currently plying their trade between Carnaby Street, Camden market and the Big Brother house in Elstree.

Original it may not be, but then why should they be lambasted for penning something that screams TUNE in bold capitals, which is surely the whole point as far as creating popular music is concerned, right?

Hmm how did I KNOW

that it'd be you who wrote this review :P.
as for me, i still think this band are dire and hearing this song on record hasn't changed my mind

Granted,

they're not Boards Of Canada, volcano! or any number of experimental avant garde ensembles "pushing the boundaries" as it were, but why does the word "tune" constitute an unacceptable four letter word in some people's vocabularies?
The Rifles' influences may be obvious, but so to a lesser extent are the aforementioned two at the top of the page. Doesn't make them any worse for it though, does it?

TUNE???!!!

These guys wouldn't know a tune, if it rode past them on a 'vespa' shouting "I am a TUNNNNNEE..." really loudly.
Their musical acumen starts at The Jam and ends at Paul Weller circa the shit years ( Stanley Road et al).
Spend less time watching Quadrophenia and styling your silly bouffants and a little more time learning to play your instruments and you may get somewhere.
Actually don't. Just go away. Forever. Please.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Harsh, very harsh.

I don't like this song

However, it is marginally better than their last one - 'Local Boy', or something along those lines

I saw these live....

they were boring, and not suprisingly on record they are boring.
3/10 for me.

Yep Yep Yep

I got to see them live too, met and hung round with them and the Subways for a little while, as a mate of mine was doing the Subways lighting. Nice guys, reasonable enough tunes, but nothing to write home about really.
