South: Colours In Waves

So, I get this CD by a band called South, who I know little about apart from their name, and was mildly surprised by what greeted me.

Upon hearing the opening, lightly strummed intro I feel uplifted and feel promise, but this soon dissipates. The band go from promising to slightly watered down U2 type guitar solos mid-song (although there are some interesting noises coming out of their distortion pedals!). I want to say this is average but it isn't for one reason: vocalist Joel Cadbury. There is no doubt about it, this guy can sing (proven when he guested on the last UNKLE album) and he hits each note with so much passion and precision that the song, musically unremarkable, has that little something else.

I can clearly see why they have a lot of fans and I will probably venture out to hear more. The problem is, they aren't life-changing and have a lot of competition in the UK indie-rock market.

South - Colours In Waves

Their first album "From here on in" was released on Mo Wax and is brilliant. It's got around 17 songs on, going from mellow to complete experimental stuff with James Lavelle at the helm providing beats and sounds!

Re: South - Colours In Waves

That is possibily the worst-written review I have ever read apart from those on bigmonsterhitslittletokyo.com. That is unless it was done "sarcastically" "substandard", in which case... it's still utter utter rubbish.

South - Colours In Waves

I'm afraid I agree with FcNikney_Man...useless reviews usually don't get anything other than branded 'student crap', but this is just really terrible journalism.
Nobody cares what you 'knew' of the band, or how you were feeling throughout the song, that doesn't matter.
"I can clearly see why they have a lot of fans" really? do you? your last sentence is equally as drivel.

I'm not even a South fan but seriously, I thought DiS had channeled out this sort of childish reviewing a couple of years back. Maybe you were bored, just wanting to make sure this single got covered and put absoloutly nothing into the review, but really, you shouldn't have bothered.

Sorry, I feel harsh now.

South - Colours In Waves

I agree with Dirtbomb, essentially, it wasn't the world's most helpful review. However to be fair this isn't really a particularly outstanding South single. As an introduction to the band it's pretty put-down-able. Still, it would've been nice if the review didn't read so much like an afterthought.
