Bright Eyes: Lover I Don't Have To Love

Bright Eyes, bright young thing. Native of Omaha, Nebraska, 23 years of age, five albums to his name and a slew of solo projects in tow.

Its only now that the gifted misanthrope has really come to the fore, with a sold-out tour underway and set to hit London imminently.

This single then, is his first break into the consciousness of the general public, and its quite an inaugural gambit. Opening on a sparse electric keyboard and insistent drums, Conor Oberst (for Bright Eyes is he) leads us through a dark, woozy waltz.

The story tells of a young, violent one-night romance. "I want a lover I don't have to love/ I want a girl whose just out to give and fuck/ I am the kid with the chemical eyes" intones Oberst menacingly.

Mutterings are abound that Bright Eyes is a faker, a story telling charlatan. If so, then he has me sold. But does it matter? A man who can bring such exquisitely damaged stories to the fore should be encouraged for his narrative qualities, not scolded.

It sounds like a young Bob Dylan at his angriest and lyrically dextrous. It's also incredibly gothic in atmosphere, the sense of impending doom is overwhelming, helped by the crescendo of stabbing violins as the track collapse under the weight of its own drama.

"Life's no storybook, love is an excuse to get hurt... hurt me" beseeches Oberst. Bright Eyes is suffering for his art. Pay him his dues.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

After that 'Sick of Conor' article..which being 15, I can relate to, I at least believed you would have the dignity to NOT review this single (I respect that this is a different reviewer, and may not have shared beliefs). At least get the quote correct, maybe go on a lyrics page or actually buy the album. The correct quote is: 'I want a lover, I don't have to love. I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck. Where's the kid with the chemicals?'

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

yeah brisght eyes is a sad arse fuck. i dunno. i only listen to his songs when im fucking fucked and completely pissed off with someone probably female

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

Got the Album and the single, emo boy.

But yes, it appears it that I may have have misinterpreted the lyrics. So what? Does the rest of the review not describe the song accurately? Do you think I conjured the review out of thin air? Are you really that stupid?

Don't question my integrity and fuck off back to your Dashboard Confessional albums, you righteous, pubescent child.

And what? cos someone posts an 'opinion' piece, means that the whole site has to fall into line with that? do you know what an opinion is?

If you're going to post something, think about what you're saying before you open your arse and let flow.

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

Whatever man, i'm not insulting that guy's opinion. I'm just advising that in future you check the lyrics before quoting. I'm trying to fucking help. Never once did i argue about the rest of your review. I may be fucking 'pubescent', but i'm not stupid. I respect your opinion, i'm not insulting your review. I even said in my post that I realise that you're not the same guy, with shared opinions. I also fucking said that I could relate to it... but I didn't mention that I found the opinion pretty funny. I'm not gonna turn into a fucking chainsaw-wielding psychopath because I don't agree with someone's opinions.
And PLEASE don't presume that all emo kids like Dashboard fucking Confessional. I'm not stereotyping all Gareth's to be so fucking touchy when it comes to criticism. But Gareth in this case, does.

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

Fair play, just bear in mind, if you are going to say 'actually buy the album', as if implying that I hadnt bothered to listen to the song, then Im going to defend myself, and yes, get rightfully pissed off. 'Pubescent' was a bit of a low blow though. Although I mentioned dashboard cos there was a 75% chance that it'd piss you off. Bit of a cheeky prod...

So, just don't fuck with my integrity, and I wont swear like a tourettes afflicted version of Ozzy Osbourne. Heat of the moment and all that. *friendly punch on ..dave's shoulder*.

damn, I need to be more coldhearted. cheers for reading the review. You know its right though... ;-)

might even correct the lyrics for ya.

you might have been right about those...

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

Sorry, I apologise. I was a bit fired up though from a nightly bout against my coursework. I needed my anger to be taken out on something, and breaking your guitar, or listening to Hot Water Music doesn't always work.
Sorry again but, I have to say; IT IS A GOOD REVIEW. I never insulted that.

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

Ummm yea My sugestion is if you dont like the song dont listen to it !! Write your own....If its soo bad why is it getting soo much air play?.......Lets see if your shits any better k- Dont diss it till u can beat it

Re: Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

> Ummm yea My sugestion is if you dont like the song dont listen to it !!

You seem to have missed the point of a music review, my friend.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

not to sound obnoxiously anal - it's just that misunderstood lyrics really piss me off...

the lyrics to the song are actually "I want a lover I dont have to love/I want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck/oh where's the kid with the chemicals?..."

woooo

gareth, you're gay

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

it means that he doesnt want to put effert into loving someone, the 2nd part means she wont blow up at him, shes just so sad she doesnt care, and the 3rd "chemicals" means drug substances...well, thats what i got outta the song...do people dissagree??

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

yeh..the lyrics were wrong haha.but thats all good theyve been corrected.all i wanna say is that i think this song is fuckin awesome, the lyrics are amazing and i just really really cant get enough of it.
bright eyes are the bomb shit.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

i was going to be commenting about how the lyrics are wrong but well enough people said that already.

this is an amazing song, probably one of his best, (also see: a perfect sonnet, something vauge, the difference in the shades, you are the roots that sleep beaneath my feet and hold the earth in place) and well im not the kind of kid that listens to shit like dashboard or other "oh im so sad kill me now" music. but conor's stuff is amazing, i mean he went throiugh a stage where his stuff was pretty horrible, where he would scream through the mic, "MY LIFE IS SHIIIIIIT" and that would be the entire song, but come on give him a break everyone has their horrible moments in life.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

This song is definatley one of his best songs. Note that Bright Eyes Can't really "suffer for Oberst's Art" because in actually he is the only permanent member of Bright Eyes, he is the band.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

coner is a god. a genius. this is not QUITE the best song ever written by him... but damn near close. my brother and his ex. girlfriend met him.. talked to him.. got pictures with him..

lets just keep singin'

again.. let me tell you.. he is a genius and a god.. he can do no bad stuff.. everything is beautiful just as long as it comes out of that mouth..

he is musics savior.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have To Love

Okay, there's a shit-load of hype about Conor Oberst. A bandwagon scenario is developing. Argh, I hate bandwagons! Especially when lost of little annoying trndy kids start to pretend they like good bands just because they think it's cool to do so. We all know that they go home and listen to their Steps records.

Anyhoo...Bright Eyes is a fantastic musician, lyricist and - more than anything else - a supreme storyteller. So maybe he does fabricate a little, but his craft is in sounding so genuine that we believe him completely. At least for the duration of this magnificently dark and sexy song. Yes, sexy...indeed.

Buy his records, give him your money. May the tragic, drunken poet continue to sculpt his art! And with that, adieu.
