Death Cab For Cutie: The Sound Of Settling
by Mike Diver
With a Blink 182 tour support slot in the bag, what better a time is there for Death Cab For Cutie to go all pop-punk on us and release a single that's the aural equivalent of a 15-year-old baggy panted skate kid?
...don't be so silly...
'The Sound Of Settling' is DCFC by numbers. With most bands this would make for an average at best reception, but since the Seattle quartet are so good, this still skins pretty much every other single released on the same day. It's lush, basically. Vocalist Ben Gibbard's got a hunger, and it's twisting his stomach into knots. Chances are that's not hunger, but nerves.
Those Blink kids are gonna hate 'em.

I love the "Bu-bah!" bits on this song... they make me all happy and stuff.-
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling

Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
styrofoam plates obv. the best dcfc song.-
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
the 7" has them doing a Smith's song.
This Charming Man.. I think
The CD has a song from an older album - 'styrofoam plates' and a radio session 'lightness'.
I think-
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
The Smiths cover was meant to go on that punkrawk tribute rekkid. It was on the early promos.
But got cut.
Dunno why.-
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
bit disappointing on the b-sides front then - i'm certainly not buying the cd for songs i already own. would buy the 7" if i had a record player -
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
Hey, me too!-
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
the smiths cover i have that album on my zen the smiths cover is amazin its like thee good song writing and tune of the smiths without stupid annoying morrissey.-
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
It's on an American CD reissue of their "You Can Play These Songs With Chords" mini-album. In fact, most of the b-sides from the UK singles have been pillaged from that album, thankyouverymuch Fierce Panda. -
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
has anyone heard the d.c cover of the 'cure - friday im in love'
its pretty good. so far ive only been able to find a live version of it though-
Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
this song is great, it just makes me happy!
that cover of this charming man is great, when the smiths played it it was kind of boring and dragged on by morrissey's singing but its all upbeat and happy. i love it. -
Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
I'm digging this. I'll probably buy it seeing as everyone's always on about 'Styrofoam Plates' and I've never really listened to this band before.
I'm also certain people I know going to see Blink will not like this at all. But then the people I know going to Blink have attention spans shorter than my fingernails. -
Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
Styrofoam plates - amazing song, but possibly the shittest concept/lyrics for a song ever, especially as the lyrics aren't true.. -
Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
can't believe the hype over styrofoam plates. love the photo album, but that song is one i skip almost every time. the brilliance of i was a kaleidoscope just completely eclipses styrofoam plates which follows it. it could only ever be disappointing following that tune. -
Re: Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
