Electric Six: Senor Smoke

Oh. My. God.

This album is totally offending my lobes. Every note is, to paraphrase Bill Hicks, like a turd falling into my drink. This is the sound of a high-velocity band that have crashed at top speed into a brick wall, and yet are still trying to put-put their way out of the scrapyard, and leaving a cloud of noxious black smoke everywhere they go. Difficult second album? In a way. In that it's difficult to listen to it without smashing your CD player to make it stop.

With this record Electric Six have completely worn out their welcome and revealed themselves as the sub-standard rock 'n' roll pastiche/ cabaret act we all hoped they weren't. The songs are tired and half-finished, with none of the virulently catchy greatness of the earlier singles. The sounds are cliched and basic. The jokes aren't funny at all. The vocal is bombastic and brash, shouting loud but saying nothing, and it's making me want to take this CD out of the player and throw it out of the window.

So that's exactly what I'll do. If you're walking around Dalston and you see it on the pavement, try not to get any on your shoes.

Seeing them at Popstarz on Friday. They'll be fun! Meant to be a good live band and although I only know the singles they released I can tolerate them.

Obviously I should steer clear of the 2nd album!

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

Didn't this come out months ago? I remember reading [Kerrang!, i think] that it charted at 90-something in it's first week, selling less than 1000 copies.

Gotta be the most impressive career collapse of recent years, no? From headlining Brixton to playing Islington Academy in the space of a year...

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

A colleague of mine did buy this, and he plays it constantly.

I had a listen. It's very very bad.

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

It did come out a while ago. I wanted instantly to slate it and kick it to pieces when it arrived but I thought I'd try and be fair and give it another listen, but then I just didn't want to listen to it again & kept putting it off. Sorr-eee for the lateness. My dog ate it! I was run over by a train! A moth ate my ears!

Re: Electric Six - Senor Smoke

I'm glad you explained that as I thought I was going mad!

Re: Electric Six - Senor Smoke

Offending my lobes.

Hahahahahahahahahaha! You really are that sad!

Let's all agree with the reviewer like sheep, baaa baaa. Get an OPINION ladies

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

To be honest, I quite liked them at first because you can't just like music that takes itself seriously - a bit of silliness is sometimes good for light relief (unlike wackiness which is never excusable). So because they made me smile (and this is important I think), I gave them four stars on my profile.

Then I heard this album and deleted the rating.

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

I liked the first album - its silly and never pretends it isn't, but its also catchy and good and it makes you want to dance. And the singles are ace - big and dumb and sleazy.

I will be avoiding the second album, though - especially if it's as bad as all that. Because I don't want it to taint my mind and make me unable to listen to the first album without feeling dirty, and because... well... unless the second were a massive progression and way, way better than the first with different things to recommend it, I don't actually need two Electric Six albums in my life. I just don't.

File under: Presidents of the USA, Goldie Lookin' Chain. Fun debuts all. PUSA and Electric Six so far have made the mistake of making a follow up...

(OK, I know technically GLC have had about a million albums but...)

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

i've got these jobsworths playing at my graduation ball next week. i ain't a fan of the "6" but last year i had to put up with some budget madonna tribute act and some fire yielding clowns. would i rather the bloody "wildbunch" or some shit put on by the university circus society?

i'll let you know.

Re: Electric Six - Senor Smoke

fire wielding i mean't.

best.

Electric Six - Senor Smoke

I saw them in Wolverhampton. They were great, really entertaining. Second record isn't too bad. Average perhaps but I'd rather listen to it than something as terminally dull as Idlewild any day.

hmmmmm

you could sort of see this coming couldn't you? Given what was on the first album

wtf

I actually really like this, and not only because of the fact that no-one else seems to (though upon finding out it was massively hated I've started playing it louder).
Jimmy Carter, Dance Epidemic, Devil Nights and Future Boys are songs I want to listen to again and again. This is a singles band for God's sake.
As an album I'll admit it's not fantastic, it stalls at the start and then loses interest about 6 or 7 tracks through, but that chunk is still shit hot. And the Radio Gaga cover, whilst not particularly innovative, is still entertaining.
The Pleasing Interludes make me laugh as well.
All in all, hate it if you like, but don't just say now about the band what you wanted to but couldn't when they were popular and destroy a decent, lighthearted disco-style album. It's not amazing, but it does deserve to be bumped up about 4 stars.
