For my Crimes I should be punished, but consider this my frank apology: in a popular music monthly I have done this record a great injustice. For this, I am sorry. However, anyone who’s ever had to face a deadline will be able to relate. They come too quick, and The Blood Brothers are one band that you need considerable time with. If I could do it over, I would.

Apology over, let’s do what you should with all good music rags – skip straight to the back pages. There’s no David Quantick here, granted, but album closer ‘Devastator’ does what it says on the tin. Sorry, the sleeve. “Everybody needs a little devastation” chirp those familiar high-pitched hard rockers, Johnny Whitney and Jordan Blilie. Rewind 13 tracks. Cue: devastation.

Crimes splutters into life – ‘Feed Me To The Forest’ opens with the sound of archaic machinery being switched back on for the first time in a hundred years. It groans, pops and fizzles, before exploding: “Thanks for the fucked-up future!” In light of recent elections it’s impossible to not find new meanings for old lines. Imagine how vitriolic and pissed off Crimes would be had it emerged a year from now. Two minutes of caterwauling convulsion-riddled punk rock later you’re tossed mercilessly into ‘Trash Flavoured Trash’. Again, as with all previous Blood Brothers releases, vivid and often shocking imagery is to the fore: “There’s a girl in a cage making love to a switchblade. There’s a man behind bars milking abandoned cars.” Suffice to say that your 12-year-old nu-metal brother isn’t likely to dig this, nor should he be exposed to such colourful language. After all, “The kids are spoiled rich and they don’t know shit from shit.” So say the Brothers Blood on ‘Teen Heat’.

Of course, it’s not all high-tempo hardcore – much has been said about the Brothers’ switch to a more melodic sound. The incorporation of more keys than were evident on last year’s astounding Burn, Piano Island, Burn add depth to songs that would, otherwise, often seem like mere retreads of past achievements. Upon the first, expectation-heavy listen, the likes of ‘Peacock Skeleton With Crooked Feathers’ and the title track itself come across as too, well, mundane. There are melodies there, damnit. But, you know as well as I do that with persistence comes reward – it’s the slower tracks that ultimately shine brightest, the dynamic differences assuring longevity unlike Crimes’ predecessors. (That said, I for one still dig out Piano Island for morning tube journeys.) Yes they take getting used to, but Whitney’s tinkling of the ivories prove to be a belated highlight on an album that only reveals half of itself first time around. Indeed, make it to ‘Devastator’ first time through and I’ll be surprised, especially if you’re a longstanding fan. I know I was quick to judge, and subsequently feel like an arse.

There’s little else that needs to be said at this point other than go buy. Crimes had me salivating for months before its release, and only now, some four weeks after that first listen, am I truly revelling in its charms. It’s got something for everyone, providing everyone is at least a little fucked in the head. After four weeks in its company, I know I am.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

for those going to the camden gig, apparantly it might be changed to the day after (17th) which is a fucker, cos I cant go. They might be supporting the yeah yeah yeahs instead, I haven't worked out how I feel about this yet.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

This is true - Blood Brothers ARE supporting YYYs on the 16th.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

they are playing notts on the 17 though?

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

Errrrrrrrrrr....

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

according to their site thats on the 19th now, and there also playing Leeds on the 18th

Blood Brothers - Crimes

you've got to say it, the yyy are good at picking supports, and alienating their fans!!! first the locust, and now the blood brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh how i wish i could go to these gigs

Blood Brothers - Crimes

I didn't know about the gig being moved... got my ticket anyway, so either way it's all good, in fact on the 17th it might be better for me! Excellent...

The album is truly brilliant, I got it a few weeks ago on import and it's everything I would have hoped the Brothers would do since their last release - progress. While I loved the last 3 albums (quite possibly 'March' more than 'Burn') if they carried on making them in that vein I would have got bored, and I think a lot of people will. Once again we might get a little minority crying 'sell-outs!', but to be honest, fuck 'em, they don't deserve an album this good if that's the only way they can react. Ok, rant over.

And Peacock Skeleton REALLY grows on you :D

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

Peacock skeleton is brilliant! great dynamics. I would put it as this albums equivalent of "cecilia and the ..."

Blood Brothers - Crimes

I really like the title-track. I think Blood Brothers are great at songs in that vein (i.e. 'The Shame').

Blood Brothers - Crimes

these guys still knocking around? first lp was an antioch arrow rip off.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

Controversial.
If not somewhat accurate.
The new one's totally different.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

I think Burn Piano Island Burn finally ended those Antioch Arrow accusations. Incidentally, I reckon Blood Brothers were better than Antioch even when ripping them off.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

seriously? for me, the first two antioch lp's are golden and still highly enjoyable. i liked the blood bros debut for a couple of listens then that was itl

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

well maybe you should try again, they're 5 albums down the line and nothing like they were when they started

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

nah, i have too many other records to listen to than to try out some band that i have not much interest in.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

I've shockingly never heard of them. I will whip myself with birch twigs, before finding all their music.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

That was an awful review in the *shudders* NME

Blood Brothers - Crimes

What did NME give it then? They actually liked the BPIB.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

The NME gave it 8/10 but none of the comment's were at all relevent to the album. This album is brilliant and just seems to improve on Burn Piano... on every way possible which i thought would be bloody hard. I find that the slower songs are all really good when you get into them, I found Burn Piano... could get a bit heavy going sometimes.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

i can see this becoming better than Burn Piano. it's much more instant but still much more complex. ?EH?

Blood Brothers - Crimes

The Blood Brothers website says the show in Nottingham is on the 19th while the Rescue Rooms website says it's on the 17th. I'm confused...

Blood Brothers - Crimes

The dates have been changed due to their support dates with the yeah yeah yeahs clashing with some of the other shows on the tour. Here are the new dates
15th Bristol
16th london (with the yeah yeah yeahs)
17th london
18th leeds
19th Nottingham
Im almost 100% sure that if you've bought tickets for the origional dates they are still valid.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

Don't take those dates as 100% just yet.
Things are yet to be finalised.
Offical dates will be posted asap.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

ummm, this is weird, seems to say that the gigs is on the following sunday now...
well if they make up their mind about when they want to play, they can tell us.

Blood Brothers - Crimes

did anyone else think this was just as good as "burn, piano..."? I think it is definitely album of the year, but "Burn" still edges in front as i all the songs on it are class. The one song, just one fucking song that i am not in to on this album is "Wolf Party" it sounds so drawn out and like they couldn't be arsed with making it a proper track. "Burn" is longer, but its the fact they have gone bakc almost to their old roots of short, snappy songs ("feed me to the forest", "beautiful horses") which make it sound great. The closing track "Devastator" should of been longer, but its a fucking great album.

Re: Blood Brothers - Crimes

i thought it was better, im a huge fan of piano island specialy classics like ' u.s.a nails' and ' denver max' but the musical talent from songs like 'love rhymes with hiddious car wreck' (being released as a single in feb) is just amazing. the lyrics have always been exceptional on every album all the way back to march on electric children, but i think them making songs with diffrent usues of there voices, not just the driving yelps that we're so used to, has such a bit impact on the whole album.
all in all i think its fair to say we can expect so much from these guys.
