TV On The Radio: Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
Like the thawing of an ice age, the glorious end is nigh. The post-Strokes era is about to be smashed apart. The gravy train is over. TV On The Radio are the first burning shafts of astral rays set to banish the soulless musical freeze forever.
In a culture overshadowed by pre-determined image, how refreshing to find a band as visually remarkable as the art they slave over. Afros, beards, and a no-nonsense aura of clothing not pulled off a rack for them by dead-eyed A&R men. And how fitting too they should hail from New York State, arriving from Brooklyn, superhero-style, in the nick of time.
As with most longevity-spewing, truly great records, ‘Desperate Youth...’ may pass you by the first time around, maybe even continue to wave from the back of a ever-disappearing imaginary vehicle by listen six. If spending five milliseconds to figure the origins of an album’s noises is a particular favourite pastime (i.e. “hey, there’s a man disinterestedly peeling out another shit, tinny retro guitar riff”), this LP isn’t exactly recommended.
Instead, TVOTR splurge slabs of strange sound into almost freeform structures that draw on jazz sensibilities, alt-rock peculiarities and the whole NYC infatuation with cool. The bass throbs with intent, the drums are so minimal that it would be easy to disregard them without even realising their existence. But for those very reasons, this is high fashion for those left cold in the dark months and years dominated by wanker dress-sense – a name to drop for those with too much integrity to stoop so low ordinarily.
Tunde Adebimpe’s abstract lyrics are thickened with the spine-tingling harmonious melodies of Kyp Malone – one comparison that will either ruin or define them is, unusually, barbershop quartet. Another that won’t relent is – gulp – Peter Gabriel’s haunting tones. Still, given the pick of one Genesis torchbearer to be mentioned within the same breath as, most would be happy to avoid a fucking Phil Collins name-check.
Nick Zinner even proves that perhaps that whore-costumed, big-mouthed cock of a ladyboy singer may not be as far as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ talent stretches. Which, on the evidence provided to date, is about the length of Diego Maradona’s penis (if you’ve seen the pictures, you will understand). The YYYs guitarist adds six-string scratchiness to the magnificent ‘Staring At The Sun’, which the keen will have already picked up on last year’s superlative debut EP, ‘Young Liars’. It’s an epiphany of glorious, simple music packed into a perfect summation of TVOTR’s quite brilliantly original style.
And if they’re able to translate such splendour into a befitting live experience – which with luck they’re doing around Europe as we speak – then accessible experimentation has a new clutch of posterboys. Pray they will.

This album is Awesome... it really is... and i know 2004 has already given us some mighty fine records... making 2004 one of the best years for albums of all time... and live music in general for that matter!!! but this really is a Very Strong contender for Album of the Year.
I actually give this album 5/5, 10/10, 100/100... i know that's a lot praise... but shit... this album and band deserve it...!!! Everyone should own a copy of this album (and the bands debut EP from last year for that matter)... if you don't already... go out and buy one now!!!
TV On The Radio are true innovators... add to that the fact that they look extremely funky and are 100% unique... i mean you really can't get much better!!!-

i highly recommend buying the young liars EP, which incidentally i nigh on creamed my slacks over a couple of months back, over this, at least for the unitiated. its a slightly different sound to this LP and in my opinion works better overall. check the cover of the pixies' mr grieves done in a blues-gospel acapela. mmm. -

yeh yeh young liars lp is really good.
i think his voice is really good and works well with the dark bass lines. ('sattelite' is a particular favourite song of mine.)
i thought this album was going to released earlier than the 7th june? was it put off or something, i havent heard it yet but i shall be buying it when the idiots i used to work for pay me, as they seem to have forgotten! -

Yeah the Young Liars EP is a lot better than this.
The first half of this is good.
but the second half is just like, zzz.
it's a 3 and a half star record.-

Saw this lot at a Blonde Redhead gig at the beginning of the year, and they rocked. Even though they pitched up late after playing the Barfly - power cut out the night before.
They are a seriously brilliant band, but I have to agree with tenwords - Young Liars EP is still my favourite.
What's interesting, though, is that the band is still expanding its sound over these two releases. I can't wait to see which direction they go in next. -

I heard these lot doing a session on the radio last night, didn't think that much of them. Maybe it's just me.-
TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
What a wonderful coincidence - both the EP and the album arrived on my desk this morning courtesy of amazon man. I cannot wait to slip these out of their cellophane...-
Re: TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
i like it a lot, but there are times when a constant single sustained guitar note and simple beat feels like it's gonna explode into something monsterous......but doesn't. Still, I'll keep lisetning, there's definitley something about it.-
Re: TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
I don't mean to burst everyone's bubble, but i think this record is a rather safe one. Yeah, it is pretty original, but the spartan sounds are merely a cover up for the fact that the band can't change gears once they've set themselves into a groove. I really wished this album would be amazing, but like their previous EP it barely makes the grade. 3.5/5-
Re: TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
yeah, I get that, the feeling of 'any minute now... this is... gonna go.... mental!!!', but it never really does. Especially in King Eternal, which is the most ominous build-up to nothing I've ever heard. BUT, while it's building, it sounds incredible. Definitely one of the most interesting things I've heard in a long long time.-
TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
Yep! This is a great record, but there's no need for the playground slagging of Karen O.

Sometimes...
bands don't aim to build and explode - if all bands did this, it would be a predictable world wouldn't it. I salute them for not doing the obvious.

I love this album.
I really do think it is amazing.
