The Killers: Hot Fuss

'Hot Fuss' indeed. With their gigs selling out all over the shop, and every indiekid worth his salt clamouring for a piece of The Killers, the Las Vegas fourpiece could scarely have picked a more apt title for their debut record. Fans won't be disappointed; they offer few surprises but pop pickings a-plenty.

At first listen it's hard to tell if we're hearing the seeds of greatness from a potentially - and deservedly - huge pop band, or the full extent of their talent. 'Hot Fuss' takes few risks. The Killers know their winning formula backwards, and they're not about to waste precious minutes experimenting with it in the hope of producing gold; they're happy enough with the glittering sheen that dusts the eleven pop songs presented herein.

Not that they lack anything on the surface. 'Hot Fuss' plunders the eighties with sequin-clad glee, yet avoids the trap of sounding dated; 'Somebody Told Me' is - no arguments, quiet at the back - the best pop single of the year so far, and opener 'Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine' throbs with delicious melodrama. Lines like "she couldn't scream while I held her close/I swore I'd never let her go", frantic, bleeding-heart synths clawing at the ankles of towering distress-call guitars, bound up by a pummelling rhythm section, and all of it sighing and raging at itself and indeed everyone who cares to listen. What's not to love?

Their clever sense of rhythm is where they come into their own. 'Mr Brightside' would be a pleasant but unremarkable plod-along but for its peculiar tempo; its sense of being rushed along too fast adds the panic and desperation that makes it such an addictive, wrenching song. Elsewhere, on the splendidly named 'Andy, You're A Star', rhythmic, tinny guitars flick and hover along the surface of the melodies and linear, synthy basslines, their detachedness providing cool contrast to the dubiously named Brandon Flowers' overwrought vocals. His voice is a distinctive, elastic holler, never more than on the brazenly overblown 'Indie Rock And Roll'. One can imagine the scene in the studio, arms flung out in every direction, fists thumping chests with theatric abandon, as again and again and again, he howls "it's indie rock & roll for meeee... it's all i need". It's absolutely ridiculous, but they pull it off with gorgeous aplomb.

The Killers take those two pop staples - a killer [ahem] hook, and reams of frustrated, woe-is-me angst - and staple them together with no small amount of confidence. Singing about jealousy, murder accusations and that ever-reliable subject, the misery of love, they nick Stellastarr*'s pop suss, forthrightly stripping it of all irony and intentional camp. In less capable hands the results could be unsophisticated and cringeworthy - as it is, they team the neon luminosity of Duran Duran with the camp, boyish charm of Dexys Midnight Runners - and are as likeable as either of them.

Yet even the most enduring pop songs have a horizon; hours of repeat listening will eventually kill off the euphoria that 'Hot Fuss' initially inspires. Exquisite as it is, it has a disposable anti-quality to it that denies it the potential accolade of "classic debut". Perhaps it's merely cynical pessimism speaking, but current and essential as it now sounds, it remains to be seen whether the same can be said in a year's time. One genuinely hopes it can - it's the kind of wonderful record that should be savoured minute by minute. Adore it while you can.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

Good review Iv been waiting for this record!

The Killers - Hot Fuss

I've had the album sampler for a couple of months (look at me, I'm so great!) and it's really grown on me. You're right Gen, nothing too groundbreaking, just good songs (with interesting lyrics, in places)...

The Killers - Hot Fuss

I just love this album

The Killers - Hot Fuss

'Indie Rock and Roll' is dreadful 'Be Here Now'-like sodden bravado. The rest of the record isnt too bad, but that song is just vile.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

so i really am one of the only people who likes this song...

IT'S INDIE ROCK AND ROLL FOR MEEEEEE!

etc.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

Indie rock'n roll is an IRONIC song. Everyone who takes it seriously will

a) hate it
b) transform it into a generational hymn

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

I'm not that arsed whether it's ironic or not: it just sounds hideous.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

ok so i've only heard the singles but i already love this band! *goes shopping for album* wish my last name was flowers....

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

you could always change it. flowers is a pretty name. im reckon ill change my name to... devandra bahnhart. like the kookie spiritualist guy who sings about the sun and nature.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

My most anticipated album of the year thus far... 7 days to go...

The Killers - Hot Fuss

wooo i also have the album, but i shall be buying it proper. but why did they have to play leeds the day before my english exam?!

still a great band, reminds of palm trees and places called "Sunset Bvd". The album is worth its price for the synth bit at the end of Jenny alone.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

Listening to the album sampler a few times, despite liking the band, I've come to the conclusion that the only new song that's managed to grab my attention is "Jenny". I hate it when that happens with an album, the only worthwhile songs end up being the singles.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

has anyone else noticed that parts of track 5 sounds just like the 'Only Fools and Horses' theme tune? it's pretty unnerving. 'All These Things I've Done' I think its called.

Yeah Jenny was the first song I heard and remains the best in my view. Still it's a good album, a little ironic (??) to be a classic though.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

I like it, who gives a crap if its ironic?

The Killers - Hot Fuss

I SHED 7 like SHED 7 them. Who SHED 7cares SHED 7 if SHED 7 it SHED 7 sounds SHED 7 like SHED 7 how SHED 7 it SHED 7 sounds SHED 7?
Produced by NASA as well.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

so from what i have heard (dating back to july last year) they sound like a great band. one question to all a&r's: if a band has just great songs, why stick them in the studio with a producer who seems determined to make a duran duranesqu sound all over them. the songs are good enough to stand up and fight all alone. no simon le bon needed

The Killers - Hot Fuss

three points / questions: (1) does anyone else dislike the album version of "mr. brightside" in comparison to the earlier single version as much as i do? (2) is it just me or does the guitar line from "believe me natalie" sound rather similar to bryan adams' "boys of summer" ? (3) how do you think this stands up against (if it does at all) franz ferdinand's lp?

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

1) i've not heard it - what are the differences?

3) i prefer it to franz, but only just...not sure why.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

it's mostly the drumming at the beginning: the new version has a looped pattern whereas the original was just a regular 4/4 beat. i also think they multi-track the vocals on "gotta gotta" which wasn't there before.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

didnt don henley do boys of summer?
then the ataris (cringe)

The Killers - Hot Fuss

uhm... is it just me, or does anyone else think the Killers are ABSOLUTELY F*CKING DIRE...Evidently, it is now cool to love pop bands with NO TUNES. If I wanted to listen to shit Smiths and/or Suede songs i'd play Louder than Bombs/Head Music, thanks. And what's with those horrid digital synths? Bloody hell. They were so utterly BORING in Notts the other night.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

I think they're great, persoanlly, but they were a bit erm.... dull last night, i thought. Much better last time.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

they weren't great at the mean fiddler. well. they might have been. the sound was so shit i couldn't really tell. i'm looking forward to the astoria show - methinx the sound there will be better, and it will hopefully be more enjoyable.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

"no tunes"? that is clearly bollocks.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

Yeah its just you love they are great.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

Great review Gen... I may end up buying it at some point...

The Killers - Hot Fuss

What a SUPERB album, i emplor everyone to go out and buy it... 5 amazing tracks, 5 great tracks but a dissapointing closer but still top class...

The Killers - Hot Fuss

this album is fan-fucking-tastic- 'Smile Like You Mean it' and All these things that i've done' are just perfect - they will definitely be the highlight of Glasto

The Killers - Hot Fuss

I am very much a fan of 80's music (a la The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, Chameleons, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, etc etc) and was very interested in hearing The Killers after reading about their "revivalist" sound.

I've heard a few tracks from this record and something about these guys has "contrived" written all over it - and unlike say Interpol, despite having all the right influences and sonic credentials, it just feels bad to me - anyone else have the same problem?

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

i actually quite like them, nothing life changing but you can dance to it, kinda remind me of a more guitary faint i think... saying that, you can dance far better to the ex-models, now that band is super fucking cool!

The Killers - Hot Fuss

hahha
did anyone else just see germaine greer slagging them off on newsnight before Jools?

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

yyyyeeep.
good use of adjectives, don't you agree?

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

PREDICTABLE
being one of the more obvious and uselful

The Killers - Hot Fuss

haha, yeah, i saw that. Is it just me that think's they're not as much like the strokes as they were making out?

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

Comparing The Killers with The Strokes, ehem..that would definitely be a step too far.

Although, I have to say that the album of The Killers is ok. Plus, they have given us three really smashing catchy hit tunes...

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

There's plenty more where they came from too
(That'll be the mid-80s Cure back-catalogue!)

The Killers - Hot Fuss

The singer is secretly the guy from Marion. Discuss.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

i'm glad somebody else thinks this.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

and claudia winkleman is a pokemon, just look at those eyes, no don't they are too hypnotic. save me.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

I don't HATE them by any stretch of the imagination. But they don't possess an ounce of cool.
So fuck 'em.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

However, they're a damn sight better than Razorshite.
That bastard needs hanging.

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

The Killer are better, but think your being harsh on razorlight,

Re: The Killers - Hot Fuss

The Killers are cool, but they appear to be filling a libertines shaped hole...

The Killers - Hot Fuss

Why has this writer said the Killers are so good, which I agree with, but the majority of forum users on here hate them?

Hmm..

Overrated bunch of indiepop tossage.. their lyrics are uninspiring and their music is lacking in style and creativity.. their songs are dull and predictable, and a bit of a copy of Franz (to a certain degree that is)
Not to say that i hATE this band, they simply just dont strike me. However if you are into indiepop such as this, and really all you want is for the songs to be catchy and danceable to then by all means get the album..

You have no idea what

indiepop is. The Killer's music is pop rock/alternative pop rock. They are NEVER "indie".
