Pixies: Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

“…(A) band who, at their absolute top-dollar best are blandly entertaining college rock.”Steve Albini.

It was Kurt Cobain and David Bowie’s favourite LP of the ‘80s, but the man who helmed 'Surfer Rosa' was just glad that he got to "rewrite the Pixies songs with a razor blade".

OK, so the Pixies were college rockers, but so were REM and Talking Heads. This compilation begins with the Albini-recorded ‘Bone Machine’, a fair demonstration of the elements that made them great: there’s Joey Santiago’s serrated riff, the Black Francis-patented scream and trademark seedy lyricism. "You buy me a soda and then try to molest me in a parking lot. Hup hup hup!". The thunderous drumming of Dave Lovering, Kim Deal’s harmony singing on the chorus, the lovely, restrained menace of the verse and the freewheeling guitar glory of the chorus.

There are three tracks here from 'Come On Pilgrim', the debut mini-LP, of which ‘Caribou’ is easily the best. The almost flamenco-styled, syncopated rattling of Black Francis guitar in the desolate chorus and his scream of "REPENT!" make this song one of the most important Pixies moments on record.

Hearing Surfer Rosa‘s ‘Broken Face’ straight after it, however, gives a lot of weight to the suggestion that Albini really did kick the Pixies into gear when they recorded their first LP proper with him in 1988. There’s so much more menace, malice and purpose in the sound, for which Albini rightly takes a great deal of credit.

Kim Deal’s ‘Gigantic’ comes in and everything else stops. It’s Kim’s gem, an unspeakably cool song. That Deal was underused as a songwriter in the Pixies was surely one of the reasons for their eventual split. Kim’s vocals root ’Gigantic’ in pop and it’s that essential pop-core that Albini was talking about when he described the Pixies as college rockers; the songs are all very definite, tightly coiled pieces of music. The Gil Norton-produced 'Doolittle' LP (1989), brought the melodic element of the Pixies sound to the fore and it’s no coincidence that the version of ‘Gigantic’ included here is the Norton remix, rather than the original Albini-recorded take.

Dynamically, the Pixies at their best were incredible. Black Francis’s singing, the guitar attack and Dave’s drumming allowed the band to switch, mid-song, from the disciplined, repetitive and restrained to the wild, free and discordant. It’s much to their credit that they never went overboard into white noise on record, because they had the intelligence to harness their instinct and capacity for sheer noise. ‘Debaser’, for example, manages to mix the inimitable Black Francis holler and the squalling guitars with that uncanny pop sensibility. "Rock me, Joe", sings Black Francis, as violins and cellos blend seamlessly with the electrified drones and sweeping melodies of Joey’s lead guitar, on the unique and incredibly intelligent ‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’.

'Doolittle' is heavily represented on this best of, but third studio LP 'Bossanova'(1990) is treated harshly, with only three of its tracks making it onto 'Wave Of Mutilation'. In some ways, 'Bossanova' is the most interesting Pixies record, displaying an art-rock turn which, sadly, was never followed up. ‘Dig For Fire’, which is genius, is the best of the 'Bossanova' tracks included here, with its shimmying, Talking Heads-ish verse and yet another of those inimitable Joey Santiago guitar moments in the chorus. 1991’s 'Trompe Le Monde' gets three tracks too; the gutsy, punchdrunken ‘U-Mass’, the slightly bloated rocker ‘Planet of Sound.’ and ’Alec Eiffel, which has no right to be on a Pixies Best Of at all.

The Pixies created some of the most joyous, brutal reassessments of rock music yet written and many of their best songs are to be found here. For the uninitiated, 'Wave Of Mutilation' will serve as a fine introduction to the Pixies unique and compelling sound. For the faithful, the opportunity to compare this best of with your own personal favourites and argue about what should have been included and what shouldn’t. Enjoy them when you catch them on the reunion tour this summer.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

there's already a bloody pixies best of out, that you could probably buy for about £35 less thatn this cynical tie in with the bands reform. DON'T FALL FOR IT YOU GRASSHOPPERS! Uhum.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

man the pixies have got money hungry, there going to do a show here in Atlanta and the tickets are 245 fucking dollers, thats 490 pounds for u brits, i love the pixies but come on give a kid a break

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Thats not True at all, I dont know where you are buying your tickets you crazy bastard... My ticket was like 40 dollars........honestly what the hell are you talking about

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

no actually thats 130 pounds..you arent telling me thats how much they actually originally sold for? thats the ebay inflation price, surely?

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

no man at the ticket office 240 dollers, and two dollers makes a pound, no inflation, i feel betrayed how much did they charge for there last show before they broke up

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

If two "dollers" makes a pound, then 240 "dollers" makes 120 pounds, trailer park boy. The guy at the ticket office really saw you coming...tell me, how many dollars makes a doller?

Does seem a lot though. If they were that skint they wouldn't all have become such fat bastards in the last decade...

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

hahaha
best thing i've read for ages
i wish the money system worked like that when i was trading in my dollars for pounds when i last got back from america

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

In another 5years there will be another best of lp, its the way these days. Rehashing , recashing. I wont be buying this as 'death to the pixies', is a perfect reminder of what they did.
However the dvd i will be buying.

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Well it's not as if 4AD's books are overflowing with bands of guaranteed moneyspinning potential anymore. Unless the press can't come up with any more will-this-do 'scene' inventions ('Shroomadelica'! Jesus wept! Put that shotgun against my temple NOW somebody! please!), and so start on a shoegazing revival for their benefit, obviously...
So it's time for 4AD to give that Pixies cash cow one final last long milk (and then pray for new material).

The DVD (the docu and lots of the live gig clips at least) have already been on tv twice at least too, but hey you get to be told by Bono etc how great they were (hey tanks fella, I wasn't sure, snore). And I'll probably get it in the xmas sales or something still, desipte having it on video, like a right sap...

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

it also includes live footage, and the videos which is why im buying it, not for bono, thom yorke or david bowie's opinion.

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

live footage = of said gig there were lots of clips of in the docu. I've it on video though so hey.. (or should that be Hey!..)
Can't wait to see that great Velouria vid again either, oh yeah..! the others being on there will probably swing it for me once it's in the sales though, ahh I've not seen 'Monkey Gone to heaven' since i was in short trousers and single figures..

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

these arent just clips my friend, there are gonna be full live shows included! Have you ever seen the allec effiel video? Thats pretty naff, but cool to see in decent quality, ive only ever seen it in a tiny lo res file i got off the net.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

I'm not sure that i agree with 'Planet Of Sound' being "slightly bloated" (its only 2 minutes long! and as good as anything else on the album). And the last thirty seconds of Alec Eiffel is gorgeous. Nice review otherwise. That cover is horrid though.

Anyone heard the recordings of the first few gigs? The version of 'Nimrods Son' is bloody weird

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Although I think Steve Albini is a genius he does appear to be a bit of an arrogant arsehole at times.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

<<There are three tracks here from 'Come On Pilgrim', the debut mini-LP, of which ‘Caribou’ is easily the best.>>

Well, I can only assume "Levitate Me" isn't on there then! And if it isn't - bugger me, who compiled this thing?

I also think "bloated" is the wrong word for "Planet of Sound" - "self-parodying" or something to that effect would perhaps have been a bit better.

And Steve Albini is a moron - unfortunately the Pixies were at least a thousand times the band that Big Black were / are / ever will be. Yes, his production on "Surfer..." is part of what makes the record great, but to suggest that he somehow made them the band they were on the back of the (virtually flawless) "Come On Pilgrim" is surely a little strange. As a record it's for all intents and purposes as good as "Surfer..." anyway, just not as long.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Is Velouria on it? And why do people see Surfer Rosa as beter than Doolittle. It isn't. A lot of the songs on Surfer Rosa seem more like concepts than fully charged songs like the ones on Doolittle.

The first 7 songs of Doolittle, with Bone Machine and Gigantic off Surfer Rosa, and Velouria off Bossanova, would make the greatest 10 song album ever.

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

i agree, doolittle is much better then surfer rosa, but is Caribou on the first 7 songs of Doolittle? If not cont one of those out and put it in cause its a great song

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

aw c'mon - gouge away is better than dead, surely?

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

oh yes it certainly is m'boy.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Hmm..got my tickets to the Atlants show for $37.50 a piece with a $10 parking pass. Two Coachella tickets for both days ran $300. Not sure where you're shopping.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

I was willing to give Albini some credit....until I just saw this.

Just because a song has a hook, or a harmony doesn't mean it's no GOOD, Steve. Or didn't you get that concept when YOU, wonderful you learned about creating music. Fringe insanity isn't the ONLY fucking thing out there of value. Your scene will seem just as dated and foolish, one day, as Iron Maiden seems now. The only thing that holds up in art is INTELLIGENCE. Expression without intelligence is monkey-shit on the walls. Pixies were intelligent, and at least they knew when to SHUT UP. Holy pig-tits, you mother-grabbing fuckface...... Trompe Le Monde is better than ANYTHING you've ever comitted to vinyl. I'd rather pay hard cash for every Lee Renaldo album on the shelves, rather than even STEAL one of your MP3's, and his records are garbage!!! Punk sensibility my ass.

If I ever see Albini on Ave. C, I'll kick his dick in the dirt.

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

hahaha....hilarious.

This and the comment above about the trailer park boy have made my day.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

P.S. Here's the link to Pixies Atlanta show ticket prices....

I think he means tickets are $245... uh ...for SIX people.

The Web.... exposing new lows in stupidity since 1993!

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

alright iv gotten ripped off, i ended up buying them from a freind for 75$, those comments were not the smartest iv ever said

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Does anyone know the release date for The Pixies DVD? I can hardly wait!

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

it's out now! everywhere...

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Just picking up on the comment about Alec Eiffel not deseerving to go on the best of.. errrm, It is only one of the most glorious , dirty, majestic, ever increasing, merry go rounds of a song I have ever heard. And its about the eiffel Tower and how it feels to be it and I bloody love it.. I also think Trompe le monde is always overlooked. The 1st side (of which alec eiffel grabs by the collar of its shirt and throws it into the flames where u meet sad punk, letter to memphis, umass etc) is so well arranged by the end of it i feel like i'm top of the eifel tower itself brandishing joey santiago's guitar about to jump off. Erm, anyway. I like it and i think other people should too.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Stop with the albini slagging, do none of you think that he may have been being ever so slightly ironic when he made that comment? Also if i remember rightly he made it in response to one of those "so you worked with the pixies, arent they great?" questions. Its all about context. He cant hate them that much, he still works with kim on her breeders stuff(Absolutely brilliant). And also he's never been a huge fan of working with big name bands (Im aware of the nirvana stuff), the man has integrity he'll work with anyone who can afford his incredibly low rates as an engineer. Which, given that hes worked on some of the most important alternative albums of the last twenty years, is pretty decent of him, dont you think?

Re: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

well, like you say - he'll work with anyone who'll pay him
so kim likes his sound
so she (ish) pays him
and they work together.
i love albini and damn near all he stands for, but its just possible that he doesn't like pixies.
which is a shame

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Hmmm.... Now that you mention it, he DID do a good job on the Wedding Present's "SEAMONSTERS",.... maybe I've been a ...... NAHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Fuck him.

How many times can you play a solo that is, by closest approximation, the amplified equivilant of squeaking fingers on a party balloon? SNOREEEEEE............

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

Albini can be known to make some wayward comments, yes this makes hima prize tit. However his recording process brings a bloody brilliant sound to anyone and everyone's records he works on.
Pixies were simple, who cares what Albini says, i cant think of one record he's done mucially where he plays and sings, that's even held in the same light as doolittle or surfer rosa ( didnt like his production on that anyway).
(dont get me wrong i love shellac,BB and rapeman.)
Sorry steve-o.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation - The Best Of

The Death to the Pixies compilation album has nearly every song on this album bar 5 and has been around for years.. Bit of a cynical ca$hing in on a recent resurgence me thinks
