While NYC scuzz-punks prefer their ubiquitous ‘The’ prefixes and =EmO= weepers tend to monicker themselves with a short sentence involving Molly or someone, the goth-hardcore fraternity are inherently obsessed with the underworld and legendary status via death. Enter My Chemical Romance with their re-released début.

They flounder smartly through massive, calculated goth-punk outbursts in the veins of a more miserable AFI or a calloused and more concise Finch. Some of the lyrics are obviously quite ridiculous when taken out of the context of the grumpy yet frantic melodies that accompany. When you’re moaning about how your hot bitch of an (ex) girlfriend shagged four of your mates last night and how you want to shoot bits of (your own) brain against your parents’ walls it sounds damn good though.

This record’s undeniable fragmentation is displayed in the fact that every song can happily stand alone and be played on repeat - but only if you wish to attain the same level of mental torture and distress that MCR are clearly at. If you are prepared to ignore their bitter, over-earnest vitriol and would just like to swoon slightly as you catch the occasional palpable noun, citing vampires or bullets, this could be one of the best records you buy this year.

My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

"this could be one of the best records you buy this year"

Doubtful. EXTREMELY doubtful.
This album is painfully average. For a genre that is over-saturated, you're better off buying one of the multitude of albums that "do it better", if you will. There's no doubt that this band could make a good album, and although it's certainly better than these outright emo bands (Taking Back Sunday, Starting Line etc), there's nothing from the album that particularly stands out.

Stick to Thursday - avoid this.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

They really sound nothing like Thursday though.......

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Yeah, you probably find them generic because they employ what can best be described as a "textbook" emo approach. That said, they are possibly the most proficiently high-quality voice of the genre now that the likes of Far have faded away. In addition to this, they have been releasing material since 1999 which, although only five years ago, is a relatively long time compared to the glut of average emo bands (Brand New, The Used etc etc) who have risen to prominence in their wake.
As for My Chemical Romance... well I downloaded (go on, shoot me) a couple of tracks and found them inoffensive enough; I'm looking forward to getting hold of this album as it's had quite a lot of positive feedback.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

i like emo, and i dont rate thursday at all. i find them really boring.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Didn't say MCR sound like Thursday. I simply said that both MCR and Thursday belong under this "emo" tag, and that Thursday....well.....are better. Although Geoff Rickley (Thursday vocalist) did produce MCR's album....

Emo.

Do you know what emo is? If you did, you wouldn't be calling MCR emo. What, just because they where a lot of black and sing songs that aren't all about love (like all of the top songs these days) they're emo?

My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

"i find thursday a bit generic!"

Slander! Havn't heard the MCR album but what i've heard hasn't sounded half bad... Thursday are are the pinnacle though...

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Sweeping Statment City, NJ!

Pinnacle? Thats a bit much for Thursday. Don't get me wrong I ADORE Thursday, I think they are definitely one of the bands out there really doing it and well. Surely the pinnacle of this genre would be Far, At The Drive-In or Fugazi? Just my opinion, I happen to believe these guys to be my Emo Godfathers. X

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Well, if you're comparing Thursday to the "current" list of emo bands, then there's no doubt Thursday come out top. You can't really compare Thursday to the three bands you mentioned, since they are in some way "originators" of the genre.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Um yeah. Should think more before I post. Thursday do come out at the top of modern day efforts. Not hard when Finch and Funeral For A Fucking Friend are your competition.

Y' know who really rock. Planes Mistaken For Stars.

DAMN that band kicks it.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

THURSDAY! A BIT GENERIC! THERE THE MOST GENERIC BAND EVER! no i'm just kidding. i've never heard Thursday but i have heard of them. I just put this post up in here cause I'm bored

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Own the MCR album now and it's a great 4/5 album... not spectacular and not going to knock Thursday off their now confirmed perch...

My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

DiS's ratings need revamping, almost everything gets at least 3 stars. Might as well not bother reading the reviews.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

I made the case for getting rid of ratings because people only review stuff they love or hate on here
but the decision was made to keep the ratings because the readers would just moan that they didn't know what was going on
there's going to be someone moaning whatever we do
right?

My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

this is a my chemical romance message board, stop talking solomly about thursday. this album IS one of the best iv bought all year. "headfirst for halos" should be a modern anthem. I'm going to see them soon and i have very high expectations. They piss all over thursday but, then again, I'd say that stereophonics *spit in disgust* are better than thursday. whining twats

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

LOL, my fault entirely.......(sorry).

However, I don't agree - MCR are NOTHING special at all. Thursday are fantastic IMHO....as I said, Geoff Rickley produced most/all of MCR's debut....therefore, you should really give Geoff/Thursday more respect!!

And you like the 22-20s and the Zutons....and you said that the Phonics are better than Thursday......ummmm...sorry...NO.

Re: My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

I think the comment that My Chemical Romance piss all over Thursday is a little bit premature. When MCR extend and develop their sound over three albums (as Thursday have indisputably done, going from a raw punky sound to an almost anthemic feel) then your opinion shall be a little more valid.

Well...

...they may've gone in a different direction to Thursday but after hearing The Black Parade, I think we can safely agree MCR HAVE extended and developed their sound over three albums!

erm...i havent heard thursday so i cant shit on them like almost evry1 is doing. and well i just have to say i havent heard MCRs 1st album...yet.does anyone c where this is going/ no well. i have however hrd the 2nd album and i say 3 cheers for great music. MCR kick ass. thye have yet another fan to add to their list. Guys you rock. i agree with the band dissing. its a no-no. if you dont no shit about playing music dont knock those who can...

Well, I love MCR

But honestly, this is not one of the best albums you'll ever hear. And this is not an article about Thursday, peeps. It's just a mess. Not only was Frank Iero not on most of the tracks on this album, Gerard Way sounds drunk and mumbling through most of this album, so basically it's... mediocre drums and bass + awkwardly heavy metal style riffs + warbling mumbling screaming singer = kinda shit album.

I agree

It's not their best. But it was their first album. What can you expect? They were unexperienced. And as you can see from their newer music, they've gotten a lot better with more experience :)
