Guns N Roses: Greatest Hits

Who really thinks that Guns N’ Roses releasing ‘Chinese Democracy’ would be a good thing? Really?

No, didn’t think so. It’d be like someone unearthing a lost William Burroughs work and finding out that it was a Harry Potter book. Wrong, stupid and bizarre.

But still, something’s gotta keep the flames of the baddest heavy rock band ever ™ going. This though? A ham-fisted rummage through the band’s ever-tatty-growing back catalogue? Hmm.

So, no, it’s not all good. Is it a greatest ‘greatest hits’? No. It’s a well-proportioned selection of the band’s recorded history (and all the problems that go with that). Ergo, we only get three tracks from ‘Appetite For Destruction’ where there should be six (pushing on ten), and we get three tracks from ‘The Spaghetti Incident’ where there should be none. Guns N’ Roses are an obvious kinda band, we accept, but please, grant us some sort of intelligence. You can stick your ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ up your arse.

In mitigation, it’s impossible to call a record that has ‘November Rain’, ‘Paradise City’, ‘You Could Be Mine’ and ‘Patience’ on it bad. But they’re really pushing it. A perfect example why a band falling to pieces from the start should never make a long term commitment to excellence in recording. But why should they give a fuck? They were Guns N’ Roses.

Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

God damn Axl Rose for fucking up the greatest band ever - The least he cold have done would have been to put a couple of new tracks on it. But no, that seems too much like progress.
If anyone who's already got Appetite and UYI 1&2 has any sense, don't buy it. for christs sake, don't buy it, yo udon't want top encourage twats like AXL.

Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

I'd think Geffen needs the money, seeing as they're spending frankly ludicrous amounts of money to fund his never-ending recording sessions.

I've never quite understood the hysteria surrounding "G n R"...I'm not saying I hate their music, but I'm hardly a fan. 'Paradise City''s riff is faultless though, and anyone who disagrees is frankly a fool.

Re: Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

matter of fact is, Geffen have had enough of Axl, stopped throwing money at the wall nd decided not to fund any further studio work - the band is now being funded entirely out of AXl's accumulated and rapidly declining bank account.
This album is a last ditch attempt by geffen at recouping some of their lost millions ....with the vain hope that it might get them some more publicity for any future releases.

Re: Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

agreed, but after what 11,12 years, you'd think a new track or two wouldn't be out of the question - and anyway, surely new tracks would boost sales, after all, most people that would be interested would already have all the tracks making it pointless releasing it.

Re: Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

Funny thing is, its not like the tracks aren't out there....
what about the alternate mix of Mr. Brownstone off 12" only? Or the live tracks from the Japanese 87 EP used on UK B-sides...or the live version of Coma that only ever came out on the japanese release of Live Era 87-93? oR the illusion out-take (and b-side of Live and Let Die) "Shadow Of Your love" (one of the finest GNR songs IMHO)..and to not even put "Oh My God" on it as a sampler of the future (or the Studio re-recording of Sweet CHild of Mine used on the "little Nicky" soundtrack) is stupid is as stupid does.
Hmmmrph, and Geffen wodner Why no one will buy the album? I don't....

Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

GnR ballsed it up themselves years ago. Use your Illusion could have been one great album but instead the ego of Axl meant we were subjected to two rambling albums. For someone who remembers buying Appetite when it was released and still rates it as one of the greatest albums ever it is how I will choose to remember them. Every great band suffers from record companies pissing on their back catalogue just think Sex Pistols, Stone Roses, The Clash. It's what happens when you make a deal with the devil.

Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

The Clash was the worst though...bringing out a "Definitive Clash" mere weeks after Strummer's death was beyond tasteless.

Re: Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

Well, It may have been tasteless but it had been planned all along anyway, long before his unexpected death - Strummer chose the tracklist. Not so much cashign in as carrying on with his original intentions anyway.

Guns N Roses - Greatest Hits

guns n roses r the best band ever, what they accomplished in their time is superior to almost any work by any other band. no one can blame slash, izzy n duff for leaving, espescially after axl fired there old drummer steven. it is a waste technically to release this greatest hits album, but axl wants nothing to do with it, in fact he tried to stopn its release by suing geffen. its a nice idea though, the greatest hits, its really the only way to bring the band and the fans closure.
