Brand New: Deja Entendu
It’s an intriguing twist; few would have expected that Brand New would be the ones to raise the bar above their more established contemporaries, such as Saves The Day and the now-defunct Promise Ring.
What immediately marks them apart from the crowd is main songwriter Lacey’s singular musical ambition. Treading familiar water is clearly not a term in his lexicon, as ‘Deja…’ tackles a vast array of contemporary styles over its 49 minutes of running time. Emo, punk-pop, indie rock and new wave are all effectively blended together here (sometimes on the same track), which although impressive, can also be slightly disorientating at times. For example, while ‘Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die’ rocks like a motherfucker, it is followed immediately by ‘Play Crack The Sky’ which sounds alarmingly similar to Counting Crows.
The main flaws of the record, however, are present in Lacey’s occasionally overwrought lyrics. He has clearly studied at the school of Kurt Cobain self-depreciation, yet coupling this sentiment with such themes as under-exposure and traditional relationship trauma is often awkward. Lines like “I’m heaven sent, don’t you dare forget,” and “I wouldn’t stop if I could, it hurts to be this good,” (both from ‘Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t’) don’t translate well unless you take time to weave together the stream of consciousness-style subtext.
Ludicrous song titles and minor flaws apart, ‘Deja Entendu’ is a defiantly intelligent and singularly rewarding piece of work. ‘Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades’ is a breathtaking update on The Cure’s ‘Close To Me’, while ‘The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows’ is pure emo rock grit.
Brand New are clearly still finding their feet, but only because they are aiming so gloriously high.

Brand New - Deja Entendu
i've had this since the US release. it's better than the first album, but still not amazing. there are a few unbelievably good songs on there, but overall the album just shows a lot of promise. they need to get the balance right between loud/quiet songs, some of their slower songs are quite boring. i'm sure one day they will make a fucking brilliant album.-
Re: Brand New - Deja Entendu
i love you reeve. haha -
Brand New - Deja Entendu
I've had this for 4 years
it's not as good as another album I have
this upsets me-
Re: Brand New - Deja Entendu
Yeh they switched from idnetikit pop-punk to the most blatent emo band in the world in the space of 18 months... somewhere in the middle and more full out rock songs would be perfect, going to see them on the 20th, shoulfd be good... -
Brand New - Deja Entendu
i wrote this album
it sucks -
Brand New - Deja Entendu
The first album was awful and this ain't much better. Whoever reviews it needs to listen to a tad more 'emo' if he honestly thinks this is in any way revolutionary. To compare them to ATD-I is just a joke-
Re: Brand New - Deja Entendu
The review doesn't compare them to ATD-I though.

Brand New - Deja Entendu
It says they're as big a leap forward as ATD-I, which is cobblers. Relationship of Command was a shot in the arm from the underground for mainstream rock, was something intrinsically different despite the obvious, eternally stated influences, and still stands apart despite the countless imitations that have followed. If the reviewer had said it was a similar step on for the band personally with this album, I'd say fair point, but as for the effect on the music scene, I think thats hopeless naive.
Deja Entendu, despite being a very good album and a massive step on from their debut, is of a certain ilk that has been done to death. Jesse Lacey knows this, hence the ironic album title. What he's done has made the optimum use of that tried and tested sound and, whilst far from being life changing, its bloody enjoyable.-
Re: Brand New - Deja Entendu
I've had this for 8 years.
You're all so behind.
It's not as good as Close To The Edge or Brain Salad Surgery. -
Re: Brand New - Deja Entendu
I didn't say the band were "life changing" in a cultural sense, but I stick by my comment. This album is a big step forward for emo musically and I think this is the most interesting and unique album to come out of the genre in recent memory.
While Relationship Of Command was undoubtedly a solid album, it didn't actually do anything hugely original in the music department. Bands like Jawbreaker, Quicksand and Girls Against Boys had all done just as exciting (and arguably better) records in the same field before. It just so happened that the press latched on to this one and that's why it's an easy name to throw around.

Brand New - Deja Entendu
this band has nothing to do with emo. emo is DIY, if your band is not DIY, you are not emo. the two are insepererererable. -
Brand New - Deja Entendu
I love this album! And the new video for Glory Fades is an epic piece of contemporary imaging.
Not sure about this emo vs DIY ethic malarkey, all this typecasting - you should all go work for the NME. -
Brand New - Deja Entendu
I've just realised how much 'The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot' reminds me of the Smiths' 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want'. -
Great album
'I will play my game beneath the spinlight' really gets to me. The way he pants 'paid to make girls panic while I sing' actually makes me feel out of breath. That's the sort of emotion and originality that makes this band so great.
I wish they'd sort their website out though...
