I Was A Cub Scout: Pink Squares / Echoes

If there’s one lesson that was taught well to me by my mother as a youth, it’s that there’s no shame in coming second to a drumming gorilla. Which I Was A Cub Scout would do well to keep in mind when I say that ‘Pink Squares / Echoes’ is the second best thing Hugh Padgham has done over the past twelve months, after ‘In The Air Tonight’ graced that bizarre Cadbury’s ad late last year.

Polished to a silky Kraftwerk sheen by the Phil Collins producer of some repute, the lead track is something of a conundrum in that it’s both emo as hell and strangely dispassionate-sounding, a pleasing paradox which sounds not entirely unalike to Foals reclining semi-conscious in a chill-out room.

On the flip 'Echoes' is a more straightforwardly anthemic affair, albeit with ace widdly organ bits that sound like a child's rendering of a UFO sucking up members of The Postal Service for anal investigation.

Or, to draw compliments from the fusty old sack marked ‘outmoded comedy references’, niiice.

does it need to be released again?

oh well, its improved since its last review anyway.

the new pink squares

sounds better, but the old video was the best.

can't wait to go and see them tomorrow at rock city and for the album to come out.

cmon iwacs

milk it! milk it good! four more releases!!!

Just listened to that YouTube clip...

Sounded like Keane crossed with The Feeling, with a bit of Death Cab/Slower Postal Service thrown in... Is that a fair assessment? Is there better on offer? Couldn't get excited by it at all.

much better

your desription is wrong.

Todd looks like he is wearing a lot of make-up

& I like this video a lot! Can't wait to get the album.

Umm...

After 'Pink Square/Teenage Skin' they didn't have the songs. That's why they had to re-release PS just before the album release. They still don't. Echoes is utterly forgetabble - very weak in tunes. I personally prefer the original Pink Square, both the song and the video. Promotion and marketing-wise they are doing everything - but to me it seems like a perfect example that no high-budget production and aggressive plugging cannot hide the shortage of good songs.

Having heard all the singles released so far I don't think I'll buy the album.

They have really nice, genuine, supportive fans though - but is their popularity especially at myspace down to their personality or their music

...

Ugh, this shit is AWFUL.
