Glastonbury: Eavis says lottery is the only way

In the latest twist to the Glasto ticket saga, it looks like OUR idea for Glasto to utilise a lottery system to distribute tickets could actually become reality. Read the original feature here.

Glastonbury owner and organiser Michael Eavis told NME.com: "I just wonder whether the future is really low tech? Everybody writes in, we put the names in a big tombola and we pick 115,000 letters. We collect them all, put them all in a huge barrel like the lottery and pull out the numbers."

It has been suggested that the ticketing fiasco could have been lessened had they gone sale on a Sunday, when phone exchanges would have been less busy. However, in reality, this probably would have made little difference as the same number of people would have been disappointed.

There has also been talk of having a year off next year to try and dampen down the hysteria that’s been created over recent weeks. Eavis added: "We’re not really due for the year off yet. I haven’t quite decided but we’re certainly considering that at the moment. I don’t really think that argument is going to win through, but you never know, it might do."

The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts takes place between 25-27 June at Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset. Oasis (Fri), Paul McCartney (Saturday) and Muse (Sunday) will headline. You can visit the official message boards here.

Eavis: Lottery is the answer to Glasto saga

theres still tickets on the internet selling for £300 a piece already. i reckon thats likely to double as the event gets nearer, so if those tickets arent usuable (ie they are real ones but cant be used to get in because of personal identification issues when entering) then the site is going to be a few hundred people quieter than normal.
my mum was actually going to write to Michael Eavis, saying that the new tickets scheme stopped larger families from going or big groups of mates. if one person gets 4 tickets then are all your mates?. it stops the more devoted fans from getting tickets. there's no point moaning about the soul distributor of distributing tickets because there are pro and cons.

plus, people would just enter the draw for the fun of it, and then they will sell their tickets for so much. what a shit, shit, shit idea.

Re: Eavis: Lottery is the answer to Glasto saga

there's more tickets on sale on wayahead. go nuts.

Surely if it was a ticket lottery you'd end up with 120,000 people on their own with none of their friends?

prufrock, exactly what i was thinking

Glastonbury: Eavis says lottery is the only way

The excessive demand was caused in part by the fact that people would be ringing on lots of phones at once and using lots of web connections. Ultimately, all but two of my friends managed to get tickets... and if I could have contacted them in time yesterday then they would have done too. There is more demand than supply and a lot of people missed out, but that's no different to last year. But a lot doesn't mean 'millions'. They need to improve the way of handling demand, definitely, but a lottery is a terrible idea.

Re: Glastonbury: Eavis says lottery is the only way

i'm all for it, if only to see eavis try and spin a tombola weighing about 8 tonnes. faster, baldy!

Re: Eavis: Lottery is the answer to Glasto saga

In that case, how was the present ticketing system anything other than a lottery? Seems pretty random who got tickets and who didn't to me...
