Peter Andre looks set to have this week's No. 1, with the re-release of his single, 'Mysterious Girl'.
This horrifying news comes at a time when retailler WH Smith has announced they are scrapping sales of singles, in favour of albums, DVDs and computer games.
The current No. 1 is held by Busted's 'Who's David'. The worrying news is that it (allegedly) only sold 30,000 copies to get there. The No. 10 single....... oh, you know, I really can't be arsed. Anyone fancy finishing this story for me? Give it a happy or sad ending as you please.

... and I've just read that 'Hey Ya' has been deleted by BMG.

...isn't relevant. However, that Busted figure might go far in explaining how Keane did so well positions-wise.

The current No. 1 is held by Busted's 'Who's David'. The worrying news is that it (allegedly) only sold 30,000 copies to get there. The No. 10 single by Raghav - 'Can't Get Enough' probably sold only about a 1000 copies.
But even more shocking than this is that The Darkness' album, which I'm sure you all know the title of returned back to number 5 in the Album Chart! Why are people still buying it?
(I gave mine a sad ending)

What do the Yanks do? they seem not to actually release singles at all and just "release tracks to radio" - how does that work?
Andre Heads to No. 1 and Singles Chart Dies on Arse
The singles market was killed by the idiot decision to ban four track singles, whilst allowing the 2CD format. I used to buy singles a lot when I could get three new tracks by a band I liked. These days if I really liked a band, I'd have to buy two singles, get one track I already own TWICE more, and ... you know, I can't be bothered to finish my point either.

I work in a music shop and it's interesting how the top albums (Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum, Norah) are all their despite having no #1 singles - it's all down to Radio 2 for getting hip and trendy, and good on them! Despite this fake 'jazz' appealing to the middle-aged folks, i'd rather listen to that than bloody miserable Keane....

The current No. 1 is held by Busted's 'Who's David'. The worrying news is that it (allegedly) only sold 30,000 copies to get there. The No. 10 single is unfortunately not by scottish indie-popsters belle and sebastian. their computer game soundtrack does, however, manage to get to number 14.

How can keane be classified as indie, when they don't even hav a guitarist. Theyre not indie, theyre a sort of pop hybrid.
With all the talk of miniscule sales figures, a well promoted (mainstream media) , well talked about single by even a small band with a dedicated hardcore of fans could easily hav a Top 20 hit.
Well done to B & S as well.

half the number ones that have been number one recently id never heard, and didn't know about till i accidently saw they were number one. (fatman scoop and that 'u2 versus some 8 year old using ejay' song)
i hear music through music channels and browsing through internet. and the occasional lsiten to radio 2 and virgin radio and they rarely actually play anything that is in the higher/lower (however you wanna look at it) end of the charts.
the death of the charts can only be a good thing, then it can be reborn in style without all the cheesy novelty pop getting to number one.

Why do you need to clasify them as anything?
Can't you make up your own mind about music without having some generic label stuck to it first?
There are two categories that matter - Good and Bad - simple as that.

Not to endorse elitism in any way, but a new chart IS called for. Whatever your tastes, you know that there is something brewing in the UK; everyone's fucked off, more than I can remember in the last 14 years, with the way things are, with the music industry and with just about every other aspect of life in this country. Whatever happens next, you can be sure that DiS and its ilk will be instrumental in bringing out the dead.

Hi kids! Live and direct from www.billboard.com, how the Yanks do some of their shit:
http://www.billboard.com/bb/charts/hot100.jsp
Chart Key
The most popular singles and tracks, according to radio audience impressions measured by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, and playlists from select non-monitored radio stations.
Records with the greatest airplay and sales gains this week have italicized numbers on gold backgrounds for current position.
Greatest Gainer/Sales and Greatest Gainer/Airplay are awarded, respectively, for the largest sales and airplay increases on the chart.
* Asterisk indicates retail single available. Airplay only songs are not eligible for the Hot 100 until they reach the top 75 of the Hot 100 Airplay chart.
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certification for net shipment of 500,000 units (Gold).
RIAA certification for net shipment of 1 million units (Platinum), with additional million indicated by a number following the symbol.
Songs are removed from the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot 100 Airplay charts simultaneously if they have been on the Billboard Hot 100 for more than 20 weeks and rank below 50.
------------
I realise all of that sounds damn complex without the chart to look at but cut n' paste that link, look at the current chart and then it'll all fit into place. What would be interesting would be to see how a single's position is calculated with respect to how sales and radi play influences position. F'instance, does 1 million single sales equate to 100 hours worth of radio play each month? What gets more weighting, radio play or sales?
A new chart for the UK is needed. the charts aren't just there to report high selling tracks, they're a huge promotional tool. If you can get lesser known lights on there then they will sell due to greater coverage. I can sympathise with you Seymour but I am sure of one thing: 14 months in Canada has made me appreciate Britain a hell of a lot more. We've got better music, better living conditions and a better questioning spirit. Britain is a lot better than many Brits make it out to be. Let the charts die, the Canadian charts are nothing here, albums do indeed rule, as does bollocks rock. DiS and other sources are doing their bit and they're fuckin' great.

Easy to have a go at Keane for being mainstream but, hello, that's why they made No. 3! The thing is they are also a quality band and deserve the success, so get used to it! Bear in mind too that they made that position with out releasing a CD2...
Andre Heads to No. 1 and Singles Chart Dies on Arse
The indie chart fucked off because all the 'indie' labels were no longer indie. You'd have mainstream act's released under majors, but on the 'Indie' labels that they had bought up. If a new idndie chart was to be re-introduced, then a definition of an indie label would have to be re-defined. Sounds easy to define it doesn't it? But cover things like the distro that the Indie uses and all of a sudden it gets a little harder
Andre Heads to No. 1 and Singles Chart Dies on Arse
As many people have said...bring back the two track single A-side and B-side, and make it 99p. Since the advent of the cd-single they've been trying to justify the £3.99 by a third track. Bollocks to it... singles used to sell because they were within the reach of everyones pocket money. Three and Four track 'singles' records are EP's and should be priced at the £3.99 mark... and six track records, mini albums, selling for £5-7, and all are a great idea for up and coming indie bands to showcase three or four good quality tracks (or to perhaps include several different remixes) the way that Curve, Ride, The Shamen, The Stone Roses etc. all did in the early 90s...
There is too little difference in price between singles and albums. There should be a VAST difference.

Re: Andre Heads to No. 1 and Singles Chart Dies on Arse
Also just heard that the Busted single sold just 50 copies on cassette last week. Not entirely surprising but interesting nonetheless.
Andre Heads to No. 1 and Singles Chart Dies on Arse
I cant believe just mentioned The Shamen inn the same breath as Stone Roses, Curve and Ride. Shame-on you.
Andre Heads to No. 1 and Singles Chart Dies on Arse
I am sad that the Shamen's reputation was so thoroughly fucked by the cack of 'Ebeneezer Goode' and what followed. Their earlier records had the acid house and hip hop ingredients in their foundations, rather than added on by a DJ remixer like the Primals and 'Roses, and 'Move Any Mountain-Progen' was every bit as much of a Dance rock crossover epoch as 'Fools Gold 9'53" ' and 'Loaded'.
Colin Angus should have perhaps knocked it on the head after Will Sin drowned, 'cos when it continued with just him and Mr.C it went considerably more lowbrow.
It's funny how history remembers those bands... Jesus Jones were also considerably more innovative from the ground up than the Mancs or the Glaswegians, and a shitkicking live band up there with the best of the time, but the overt pop in their songwriting means they're subject to a certain muso prejudice and are historically a bit underrated. I think perhaps history doesn't really respect the whole acid-techno era as 'proper' music. The Shamen and Jesus Jones were coming from the Acid Techno and Industrial scenes, which were always a bit alien to the indie guitar hierarchy at the time, though the NME etc. tried to cover the club scene, albeit in a very token manner, in order to seem credible.

Chris, I used to enjoy the NME's 'Vibes' section. At least it made an effort to explore new music away from the basic 'indie' schematic. Ben Whilmot struck me as being a decent journalist. Now we have the bizarre situation of having a load of guys who wrote for dance mags now in charge of a newspaper that's totally on this new rawk thang.
Jesus Jones were shit. The Shamen were great. I agree that the acid thing never got enough respect, I think it gets lumped in with the 'shit 80's' approach that many people adopt to the era.

well
they're not trying to be Ben Folds Five
look at Keane competing directly with Busted, Sclub, and all that cack. just that they're better (arguably) than all that doesn't mean it's not the same style.
note: Keane are a pop band not an indie band.

Oh quixotic Children, children...
Let poor schmindie sleep now, he's been awake for far too long, as a side, he's looking a little wizened around the chops and suffers from incorrigible plagiarism.
He's nothing more than a moppy mountebank.
The ''seer'' and the artist, the true artist, will not crawl from this crumbling edifice of borrowed reverence & retrospective nostalgia, no, the artist will look beyond the horizon, look into the sunset, he'll see the atavistic monuments of his youth, he will draw form, skeletons from them, then discard them like the ocean breeze.
A new hieroglyph will be found on the walls of the new seer, the marks will contain unimaginable visions and dreams, maybe the secrets to existence itself (for is that not why the artist picks up a brush or the poet the quill?), and a new order will rise from the slow awakening, the muffled disturbances of a buzzing fecundity of chaos, a clean slate for which the new heroes, creative paladins, prophets can rise into vast, rising apotheosis... great shadows streaking across the ways of old, the forces of bourgeois, elitism, the numb-skulled esoteric fading like vapours, vampiric vapours hissing through a cadaver, a coffin. The prosaic, the dullard and the fashionista has had it his own way for far too long and a great Animus drives those who are sick with the artlessness further, sometime, sometime soon something monolithic will burgeon tentatively, then in a cataclysm splitting the underground into fatal schisms and incestuous fractions, it will alight the torch of adventure and love, oh God -- LOVE! -- once more, and then, and only then will we breathe freely and live in the flowing utopia of our idyll, of our first kiss, our first love, our first dream, our fist taste of eternity -- and all who gainsay will be swept under the tide, a celestial tide.
In a daylight reverie. In my idyll.
You or I could make it a reality, a creeping shadow far too monstrous to ignore, something to terrorize the politic and the ugly castes as they stroll along the rivers of commerce and iron-girdled prosperity and luxurious ''entertainment''. Stalk their dreams and burn their vaudeville. Let the children live, however.
The children have become too acquiescent, their fathers too supine. Wake them, stir them, kiss them...
Peace & flames

ChrisN - I agree. Theres a great independent store near me selling fairly recent albums for under £7. I got a Macy Gray album for £3! Suddenly, popping down to HMV for the latest single doesn't seem worth it.
Keane: okay, but nothing new
Busted: okay, if you're under 16
OutKast: love "Hey Ya"
Jamie Cullum: wicked - and I'm nowhere near middle age

Jamie Cullum is Piano Karaoke at best. He's the Jamie Oliver of the music industry. His Buckley cover is terrible and the lovecats at the brits was desperate beyond belief.
Keane are a decent live band, give 'em a couple of years to develop and they might turn into something important.
After all who would you rather have at No1, Keane or Peter Andre?

and has anyone actually heard the westlife single? they were on richard and judy, saying how they appealed to the middle age, and their not a normal boy band.
mandy was a shocking song. it sounded like that bit on the simpsons when homer is in love with co-worker mandy and at the end he sings 'oh marge you came and you found me a turkey on my vacation away from work'
cant think of the original tho.

That's the thing though
95% of bands could develop into something important in a few years.
people have been saying that about busted. same could apply to coldplay, keane..hell even the darkness or the sugababes.
but most of the time bands don't fulfil any potential they have. whether it's in sales, quality or both.
oh well...me pessimist.
