HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

It was revealed earlier today that former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur will now be releasing her debut self-titled album on March 1st to avoid a chart battle with Courtney Love's new album!

However, the accompanying single, 'Followed The Waves', is due for release on 16th February, which may coincide with the release of Love's 'America's Sweetheart' if, as insiders suggest, the album release is delayed a week.

Similarly, the rest of the world sees the two albums slug it out with only one week between their early February releases.

Auf Der Maur seemed unfazed when questioned on the unlikely coincidence, commenting, "There's always gonna be a record by someone I know coming out. I hope hers is good and I hope she's happy with it." Melissa's new material, due for release through EMI, has already received pre-emptive acclaim from the music weeklies and features a host of guest stars, including Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan from Queens Of The Stone Age, Marilyn Manson guitarist Twiggy Ramirez, James Iha and Hole's Eric Erlandson. (On DiS' first listen, the lead single evoked the shocking image of metal mites SugarComa being demolished by QOTSA! Stream it here).

Relations between the two women have been strained since Melissa jumped ship from Hole to the Smashing Pumpkins in 2000. Pumpkins mainman Billy Corgan created a rift with Love after abandoning his production duties on Hole's 'Celebrity Skin' and accusing her of failing to correctly credit his writing contributions. Corgan dissolved his band soon after Auf Der Maur joined to form the rubbish (now defunct) supergroup Zwan.

Courtney has yet to comment on the matter, however her first solo single, 'Mono', has also been pushed back to 23rd February to allow time for promotional duties. Let the battle commence!

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

Ok, so this is a total non-story, however, this Melissa Auf Der Maur single is great, so I forgive you all. As if Courtney Love's new album is going to be a patch on anything she did before she became a publicity-seeking whorebag.

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

She's always been "publicity-seeking". Plus only about four people have heard her pre-fame album Pretty On The Inside. Actually the earlier EPs were better; Burn Black is particularly ace.

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

at the mo, i'm as giggly as a schoolgirl- going to see her support APC in Soton, should be fun. Oh, and did i mention it's a free ticket?

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

wow, this single is great. sounds BIIIIIG.

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

It is actually. I expected it to be crap.

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

It's a shame more people aren't aware of the stuff she did before she go married. Her live shows were as visceral as Rollins. I think there's a slightly unfair downer on her because, despite his talent, people are far too fuckin hung up on Kurt Cobain (and Jeff Buckley and all the other prematurely dead rock stars). She's also very talented, and has been a relatively iconic figure from a feminist point of view, since her music has been both accessible and still laded with plenty of attitude, and since she's still a player, when the likes of L7 and Babes In Toyland have fallen by the wayside. I say the more Katie-Janes, Melissas , Courtneys, Kats and Jennifers the better... more grrls in bands please... !

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

Anybody remember the Hole Peel session, around the time of Pretty On The Inside ?.After that,I was always prepared to give them a listen, cause you knew thay had potential. She may be a media whore, but it sells records.Expect her and Kelly and Ozzy to be the xmas number 1 this year with a reworking of Electric Funeral.

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

have just heard a new Courtney track - melissa has nothing to worry about - it's just ordinary, nothing worth waiting for.

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

yep the courtney single is predictable, unoriginal pap.far less inspired than anything from hole's back catalogue and could be easily mistaken for a distillers b-side.wheras melissa auf der maur's track is fantastic.

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

I don't agree at all. Melissa's track is boring and it's not original; it sounds like any nu metal song. Although I also prefer hole's songs, Courtney's track is much better than Melissa's

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

I don't mind Melissa's, but Courtney's is much more interesting. It's a lot to do with the fact Melissa just has a dull, uninteresting voice, where Courtney totally sounds as if she's singing for her life. It's kind of a shame that Courtney's taken the commercial route - but it's her choice and she is good at what she does.

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

I have the impression that you think I don't like what Courtney's doing. Although Live Through This (together with Nevermind) is the most significant album in my life, I love Courtney and everything she does because she's great and her music has something special that I haven't found in any other band or singer (except for Kurt Cobain). So I think we agree

Melissa, good luck child! :)

Re: HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

been listening to some Melissa stuff - and its pretty cool, very melodic. A different direction from where Hole are goin!

Yeah, good luck to her. (wouldn't want them to be @ war though - i like bothe bands :-) )

HOLEy War: Melissa VS Courtney

#brag# I am in serious shock. have just interviewed the wonderful Melissa in Southampton- what an individual! fit, intelligent, and a true lover of music - the world needs more people like her.
