EXCLUSIVE! Long Blondes talk to DiS: single info, dates and more

We're excited to be able to announce The Long Blondes' first movements as a Rough Trade band...

As you may have read in April, Sheffield's superb, infectiously (seriously, you try and get the chorus to 'Separated by Motorways' out of your head...) pop-rocking five-piece The Long Blondes signed to the ubiquitous Rough Trade label.

We're proud to be able to exclusively announce the first fruits of their labour, as well as a massive London headline date, regional dates and more.

'Weekend Without Make-Up' will be released on June 19th, produced by former Pulp man and acclaimed MIA producer, Steve Mackey. Across two CDs and a 7", the single will also feature Erol Alkan (Trash club) produced b-sides, 'Forward Babylon', 'Platitudes' and 'Last Night on Northgate Street', the first of which received a debut Steve Lamacq play just t'other day.

Speaking to DiS earlier, drummer Screech Louder proclaimed, "we're really thrilled to be signing to a label with such a great pedigree, and we're all looking forward to having a long term career in music. It's also nice to finally be able to quit our day jobs."

Not to be outdone, Rough Trade muscled in, stating, "we're absolutely thrilled to working with such an exciting band with fantastic songs." Hear, hear!

So, there's a London headline show at King's College on June 21st (more exclusive info, yes!), as well as these dates:-

what did they used to be called?

I knows them from somewhere but not as the Long Blondes - just a friendly enquiry

Can't stop am off to america to audition for the fall

roughtrade=

as cutting edge as a spoon...I wish roughtrade would sign something good rather than some band they know will shift units.

yeah, definitely

because signing bands that sell no copies is a really fucking great idea for a business model.

oh and just for the record:

Bell Orchestre
Dr. Dog
The Unicorns
Islands
Nobody & The Mystic Chords of Memory
The Fiery Furnaces
A.R.E. Weapons
Oneida
Relaxed Muscle

= all on Rough Trade and not exactly Top of the Popsing-it-up, are they?

BabyShambles!

Just for that I'm not listening to you, plus Unicorns shifted, I have a copy of Dr Dog, Onieda has a mass following, Fiery Furnances shift copies and the others aren't worth it like the long blondes.

Delays, Eastern Lane, Royal City, Jenny Lewis, its just a tad boring...

Actually...

The Unicorns album sold less than 1,000 copies in the UK, Dr. Dog even less.

Oneida - mass following? Nah. Cult following? Yes.

The other aren't worth it? Have you HEARD how beautiful Bell Orchestre are? Plus, if they're 'not worth it', as you say, then surely they're not bands "they know will shift units".

You're a prime example of someone who tries so hard to be an elitist indie geek, you forget why you liked music in the first place.

Rough Trade have a dynamic, diverse roster that goes from the commercially viable ends of The Libertines, Babyshambles and Belle & Sebastian, through to cult indie masterpieces by The Arcade Fire, The Decemberists and right down to important, yet overlooked releases from artists including Bell Orchestre.

It's easy to slag them for standing by Doherty, but without The Libertines, we may never have had The Arcade Fire in this country; or at least not with that lush packaging.

Rough Trade are a vital component of alternative music in the UK and Europe.

Yey!

Another band doesn't come to Wales. Cos no one lives here, obviously.

your a prime example of

someone who's bumming this band.

Jeffrey lewis I like
Low I like
The Unicorns I Like
Dr Dog I Like
strokes I like
Young Marble Giants I like

so fuck off calling me a elitist indie geek, this from you who has a go at every middle of the road indie band out there. and the Arcade Fire sold thousands be it for rough trade or not.

Yet recently they sign tripe like this and the 1990's, its just boring indie thats there to sell records. I don't think it's as vital in new music as it was.

The Bury St Edmunds gig..

...is at Studio 3, by the way.

Yup. I bum the Long Blondes. I think they're a fantastic, good fun band who can write a fucking brilliant chorus and send me spiraling around a dancefloor.

The Arcade Fire did sell thousands, deservedly so don't you think?

I bum Rough Trade.

Rough Trade also signed Scissors for Lefty recently. I wouldn't really call them 'middle of the road indie'.

Actually, fuck it, I bum MUSIC.

no, you bum them

there's a difference, plus when your bumming something its best to have taste less you get shit on yourself.

I disagree with the good fun, dance part. I like to dance I can even boogy, but i'd rather hear the long blondes in a lift. Then maybe in the context of a lift the long blondes may be bearable nearly likable, yet if it was a glass, hmmm

Arcade fire deserve everything they get, they made bjork cry.

READING

Wooo!!

No money for gigs in the meantime really, exams mean after this Saturday (Rakes + Klaxons at Shepherds Bush) no live music apart from local gigs until July.

I already said that I bum them

I agreed with you, and you still argued. Good work.

I can't be fucked with you anymore to be honest, but if the record label you're targeting this way is Rough Trade, you should probably open your eyes a little more.

lame

'i can't be fuck anymore'

Good comeback.

Love you!

Arcade Fire

It's probably here nor there in the RT discussion but I heard they haven't managed to keep Arcade Fire for a second record after the first was just a licensing jobby.

You are correct

and they've signed to a major.

The point remains that they took a risk on a record they adored though.

I agree with crablin

These lot are very very very good at what they do.They will be huge. Their lyrics are deceptively clever, too.

Well, all in all.....

(Crablin) I think what Mungo was saying is that it doesn't really look like partial journalism. Admittedly he was expressing it in a "you bum them" kind of way but do you really have to go off the deep end at your own readerbase just because they question you?

Its not like you found this info out yourself. Probably more like it was placed in your hand / inbox by a PR person who you are probably very good friends with.

I don't think you bum music but all this makes you look like you'd bum yourself if it were physically possible, maybe a bit too much given the chance.

Not a dig, just a perception.

Mungo is a mongo

1990s and long Blondes are both ace. Pop gold, both of 'em. Go and listen to your Mystery Jets record and try and find a tune.

hmm

here's a review of their single 'Separated by Motorways'
http://www.angelfire.com/indie/wideopenroad/pages/pg_2006001.htm

it mentions The Tony Head Experience - where are they now eh?

you can find a highly illegal mp3 of Debbie One here
http://www.mp3fusion.net/mp3_download/1334083/The_Tony_Head_Experience_Debbie_One_mp3.html

Straight Outta Compton (Dundon)!

mungo(loid)

what label do you run?
what labels DO you like?
what should people listen to instead of the long blondes?
what should be the next step for people who like the long blondes to listen to something similar but better/different?
why should anyone listen to anything you have to say?
why should you never throw a penny off the top of the empire state building?
why bother?
shouldn't you deflect peoples attention, point them where you want them, rather than just leave upside down thumb prints all over our page?
yours in more positive places,
sean xo

I not saying people should.

all im saying is opinion, crablin may be a PR whore i don't know. Roughtrade aint going through a good patch.

I'm saying why post this as news when most other bands get sidelined into gig listings, seems to me crablin's a bit bias, if you like the long blondes you'll find this out in your own time, if not i don't want it shoved down my throat. especially from a site which i respect and really enjoy and thought was a lot better than this.

ive found one

fuck

we've been excited by bands before.

just because you disagree for once...

it's all about opinion innit. i just think that you claiming rough trade only sign artists that shift units is quite close-minded.

we got given an exclusive

which a lot of people who read the site are interested in
an exclusive over the nme who're bumming the band so hard right now their spleens might rupture.
we like them.
we've even danced to them in our office.
and we also heart sufjan stevens.
and antony.
and islands.
x

it's like tag team with you two

I know you've been excited about bands, just this time I'm disagreeing and perhaps if you do it with one why not the rest?

and NME may bum them hard but so do you

its good that you dance round the office maybe you should get a dance mat

plus i like antony and islands to an extent, but its not like if they found em, but they didn't they just signed when a whole bunch of others would do the same

that made little sense

i haven't been asleep yet

Screech

Putting Stourbridge back on the map. ;)haha

crablin

is no pr whore. you are talking shit m'lad

As is

most music news ever? It's not as if people just know tour dates etc out of thin air!

I heart the long blondes

Saw them supporting Franz Ferdinand. I agree about the girl on guitar. She played about 2 chords a minute. Why is she even in the band? Is she some sort of Richey Edwards type person?

rough trade tried quite hard to sign mystery jets

so youre both fools
