It's widely reported already, but what the f': Goldie Lookin' Chain have been ditched by their big-money label, Atlantic.
The Welsh rappers have shifted only 60,000 copies of their second album, Safe As Fuck, if the tabloid reports are to be believed. The Sun says that the tracksuited comedy-rap act have started a label of their own, Gold Dust.
The band released the following statement:
"We now have artistic freedom to do what we want. We won't be working under any restraints and won't have to tone down the act."
Tone down the act? We weren't aware the group could stoop any lower as they are, givin' it all that 'your mum's got a whatsit' bollocks. Anyway, the GLC will perform at a few festivals this summer, and a number of television and radio projects are on the boil.
they an old joke now
it might have been vaguely amusing a couple of years ago but the its no longer funny now. the music isn't strong enough to keep them going. i'll be glad to see the back of them.
Will anyone that's dropped ever say
'Now we can't afford to record our new record in a lavish 512 track studio we're going to have to dig out the old Tascam 4 track and Music 2000 for the Playstation and make do with what we've got. I would like to say that <insert name of major label here> are a bunch of cunts for dropping us even though we knew deep down that people would soon get tired of our one trick pony act after a few weeks. We gave up our steady jobs for a crack at fame and feel particularly bitter that we have been treated as nothing more than a 'product'. We are human beings! We have souls! To be fair though we were given the same artistic freedom that we've always had. I'd like to thank our 17 remaining fan club members and hope that they continue to support us at least until the inevitable revival on Reborn in the USA in the year 2012. I thang-ewe'
DOllars
60,000 records = probably £300k for the record company (I'm sort of guessing that they get £5 or £6 per album).
Full Priced Video - £100-200k (prob some of theirs might have cost this much)
Low Budget Video - £20k
Tour support, recording budget, advertising, yada yada
It all adds up, eh!
60,000 sales...
for a major label is rubbish, I doubt it would re-coop recording costs.
the money for these guys
is clearly in live stuff, not in albums. touring a lot more would be the way to go.
agreed
I doubt they've made a penny from they're record deal.
They'll be better of as the novelty act they are. I'm thinking children's parties, weddings etc
60,000 sales
in Sweden = Platinum disc!
but there
aren't 60m people in sweden :P
I'd like to see them
make money touring, what with the fact they have 12 band members + crew to put up every night. Mind you I suppose they could just plug in an i-Pod for backing tracks and that would save on equipment space.
Boring
novelty act. Not funny.
er...
which is why they said 60,000 and not 60,000,000 you silly boy.
60,000 copies
Its still more copies of a record than I'll be able to sell
tired joke.
They can't rap. can't dance. can't even write decent rhymes. Keep an eye out for Dwayne & co stacking shelves at a Tesco near you soon!
GLC
Everyone's having big digs, as ever in DiS noticeboardworld. Perhaps it's cos I'm Welsh, but them and the Stooges were amongst the best things on the Leeds Main Stage last year, including supposed icons as Marilyn M, QOTSA, the Foos, Pixies...
Whoever it was said that they'll continue to do well live is prob right. It's less of the fact that they are a novelty act and more about the fact that, Like a stand up comedian, or theatre, their live show is all about bouncing off the audience, and the buzz of the occasion.
